1 Course Syllabus Managerial Cost Accounting (ACCT ) SPRING 2016 Dr. Sak Bhamornsiri Office: Friday 359 Course Description in the University Catalog ACCT Managerial Cost Accounting. (3) Prerequisite: ACCT Analysis of the uses of accounting data in the planning, controlling and decision-making processes of business enterprises. Enrollment limited to majors in the College of Business. (Spring) (Evenings). Textbooks Required: Course ID: Resources: Managerial Cost Accounting: UNC Charlotte, Pearson Custom Library. (This is a customized version of Horngren, Datar and Rajan Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis. 15 th edition. Pearson Education, Inc.) You will also need an access code to MyAccountingLab for your homework. The book and the access code come in a package. Both UNC Charlotte bookstore and Gray s Bookstore carry these course materials. Complete instructions on how to register for homework are shown on page 5 of this course syllabus. Course Objectives The Managerial Cost Accounting course has the following objectives: 1. To enhance your understanding of the role of accounting information in making business decisions. 2. To improve your skills in analyzing business situations in order to make proper decisions. 3. To enhance your understanding of planning and control systems. 4. To improve your understanding and skills in determining product costs. AACSB Learning Outcomes to be assessed: (A) Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze a business situation so that proper decisions can be made. Grading Policy A student's grade will be determined on the basis of his/her accomplishment in the following areas: Points Three regular exams, total Final exam (comprehensive) Homework (to be submitted online) Total available points The following grading scale will be used: Total Number of Points Letter grade 540 and over... A 480 to B 420 to C 360 to D Below F Note that the determination of your final course grade will be based on the total amount of points you earned and not by the percentage of the points you earned to the total amount of points available (600). For example, if you earned a total of 479 points your course grade is a C. Therefore, you should always study for an entire exam and not for only a part of it. Examinations (500 points) Examinations will be given on the dates and times that are shown on the planned schedule of class activity. A scheduled exam date may be rescheduled only if the campus is closed on that date. The University does not have written policy regarding makeup exams. You do not have any right to demand that I give you a makeup exam. Granting a makeup exam is entirely at my discretion. I may give a student a makeup exam. I can also deny any student a makeup exam. If I decide to grant a student a makeup exam, I also decide when the exam will be given and in what format the exam will be. I do not give any student who attend less than 50% of class meetings. 2 Managerial Accounting Spring 2016

3 AACSB Assessment of Learning Outcomes Certain questions on the exams will be designed to assess the learning outcomes that are shown on page 1 of this document. These questions will account for approximately 17% of the total available points. Homework: (100 points) All homework assignments are to be submitted online on or before the due date. Be sure to note the due dates on your calendar. You do not have to wait until the night before the due date to start doing homework. Late homework submissions will not be accepted and will not count. Attendance: Class attendance record will be kept. You will not be penalized for not attending this class. However, if you don t come to class, don t expect me to tell you what I did in class and don t expect me to help you with any question. I use attendance record to evaluate a student s request for a recommendation for employment or graduate school. I do not recommend a student with poor class attendance record for employment or advanced studies. Classroom Conduct You are required to have access to your textbook while attending class. It would be very helpful if you have with you a laptop, a notebook, or an ipad so that you can access course material via the Internet. You are on the path to becoming a professional. Appropriate classroom etiquette and conduct are expected. General expectations Students are expected to come to class prepared. Assignments are to be read prior to the class period for which they are assigned. Written answers to the assigned homework are to be prepared prior to the class period for which they are assigned. Do not underestimate the difficulty of this course. Many students struggle with Management Accounting. I hope you will not have too much trouble with this course. But if you do, here are some suggestions: 1. Study the material in advance of class coverage. Class time should be used to reinforce what you have already learned and to seek further explanation from the instructor. 2. Do homework in advance.. Struggling with the material is expected and is a natural part of the learning process in this course. 3. Do not hesitate to ask questions in class and participate in class discussion. 4. Persist in your attempt to understand the material & let me know immediately if you experience any difficulty. 5. Practice, practice and more practice. You cannot read accounting.
