1 Designing and Developing Your Online Course Hands-On Workshop for faculty developing online classrooms Week 1 - Monday, September 9, :00-2:30 Workshop Welcome and Orientation/Overview Steve 2:30-4:00 Designing a Syllabus for an Online Course Develop a syllabus expressly for your online course. Create measurable learning objectives. Explore the Competencies tool. Learn about the special considerations for the syllabus of an online course, including policies unique to the online environment. You will receive a sample syllabus that you may adapt, if desired. You will also gain hands-on experience developing measurable course learning objectives, as well as module learning objectives. These can then be recorded in the Springboard Competencies tool. Steve Week 1 - Wednesday, September 11, 2013 Planning the Structure of an Online Course Construct a course content outline using the Course Builder tool in Springboard. Copy the Orientation module into your practice classroom using the Import, Export, Copy Components tool. Organize the Manage Files area of your online course. You will learn how to translate the structure of a face-to-face course into the online environment as we explore various module structures common to online courses. Using the Course Builder tool you can ensure that your structure is accessible to students with disabilities. Learn how to organize your files to mirror the structure of your course. Jill Import the UA Course Orientation Module into your classroom. Create the structure of your content module(s) for your online course. Create folders in the Manage Files area to mirror your course structure.

2 Week 2 - Monday, September 16, 2013 Using Templates and Customizing the Navigation Bar (Navbar) and Homepage Utilize HTML CSS templates to format your course content. Customize your Navbar with specialized tools & custom links. Create a customized Homepage. Learn how to use pre-formatted HTML CSS templates to enhance the visual appearance of your course content. Add specialized tools to your Navbar, and learn how use Widgets and other options to customize your Home Page. In this session you will also discuss the importance of ensuring content is accessible and examples will be provided. Patrick Select appropriate template(s) for your course content and practice placing content in them. Customize your Navbar with Springboard tools and/or links. Change the look of your Homepage using layout options and special widgets. Work on making your content compliant with accessible standards. Week 2 - Wednesday, September 18, 2013 Images, Files and Video Encoder Optimize images for use in your online classroom. Select the most appropriate file type to display your content. Upload video files to link and stream from your online classroom. You will learn how to optimize images by cropping and resizing them with affordable or free tools. Information regarding the advantages and disadvantage of the various file type and how to choose what is best for your course will be provided. Practice uploading a video file to the video encoder to provide streaming video for access in your online classroom. Patrick Practice cropping and resizing images for your online classroom. Convert files to the file type you have selected for your content. Upload a video to the UA streaming server.

3 Week 3 - Monday, September 23, 2013 Embedding Media into Springboard Embed videos and presentations in your online content. Insert Images into your online materials. Learn how to embed videos from YouTube and UA s video encoder in your online classroom. This session also includes tips on how to make media accessible for students with disabilities. Patrick Practice embedding various types of media into your online materials and/or content outline. Revise course materials to ensure accessibility. Week 3 - Wednesday, September 25, 2013 Using Panopto Lecture Capture Learning Objective: Capture lectures using Panopto focus. You will learn how to use lecture capture software to create and deliver universally accessible content to your students. Your PowerPoint presentations, screen, and voice can be integrated using this software to produce a comprehensive video for your students. Jamie Install Panopto focus on your laptop. Practice creating a lecture using Panopto software.

4 Week 4 - Monday, September 30, 2013 Using Rubrics Determine what type of rubric to use for various projects. Select a rubric for grading discussions. Create a rubric using the Rubric tool in Springboard. Link a rubric to an assessment (Dropbox or Discussion). Litsa Learn how to create a rubric using the Rubrics tool in Springboard. Examples of rubrics used for various types of assessments will be available for your review. You will learn how these work during the grading process with Dropbox, Discussion and Grade Item tools. Select appropriate rubrics for the assessments in your online classroom. Create a rubric using the Rubric tool in Springboard. Copy a rubric from the Rubric Repository. Link a rubric to one of your assessments. Week 4 - Wednesday, October 2, 2013 Quizzes Create a quiz that provides rigor for online delivery. Import Publisher Test Banks. Convert Word test files for import into the Springboard system. Learn how to build rigor into your online testing by using various features available in Springboard. This includes features such as date and time ranges, time limits, random selection of questions from a pool, randomized distractors for Multiple Choice questions, and selected number of questions per page for delivery. You will also learn how to import publisher Test Banks into Springboard using Respondus, as well as your own Word document tests. Jill Create a quiz that implements various Springboard settings and features. Request the Respondus software for your laptop. Apply to receive a publisher test bank from Respondus. Practice converting test files.

5 Week 5 - Monday, October 7, 2013 Dropboxes Create a Standard Dropbox Create a Group Dropbox Attach a Rubric to a Dropbox Litsa This will include the differences between standard dropboxes and group dropboxes, attaching a rubric, as well as demonstrations of grading submissions using a rubric ( and how the feedback and score report directly to the grade book. Create a standard Dropbox for an assignment Create a Group Dropbox for an assignment Attach a Rubric for grading Week 5 - Wednesday, October 9, 2013 Self-Assessment Create a Self-Assessment using the Springboard Self-Assessment tool. Create a StudyMate project in your online classroom. Learn how to create self-assessments that provides immediate feedback for your students so they can check their own comprehension of the materials covered. Learn to create interactive material for students to use to review course content using StudyMate; or provide your students with a StudyMate project where they can create their own review activities. Jill Create a Self-Assessment using Springboard s tool. Create a StudyMate project for your online classroom.

6 Week 6 - Monday, October 14, 2013 Discussion Create various discussion forums for your online classroom. Utilize the Groups tool to create multiple discussion topics at one time. We will explore the various strategies used to achieve the desired outcomes for your students. Specific examples will be provided and discussed. Participants are encouraged to share ways in which they have successfully used discussions in their online classroom(s). Information on how to create appropriate questions to encourage student engagement will also be reviewed. Jill Create Basic Forums and Topics for your online classroom. Create Group discussion topics. Week 6 - Wednesday, October 16, 2013 Making the Most of your Grade book Create your course grade book. Utilize the Set Up Wizard to create a grade to date for student review. Export Grades to an Excel Spreadsheet. Provide personalized feedback on individual assignments. Learn how to use the Grades tool to its fullest potential. This will include how to use the Set Up Wizard to provide your students with an accurate grade to date. Your will also learn how to tie a rubric to a grade item and provide personalized comments regarding specific assignments. There will be a demonstration on how to Export grades at the end of the semester. Jill Practice using the Grades Set Up Wizard to configure views. Create Grade Items to match your syllabus graded items.

7 Week 7 - Monday, October 21, 2013 Utilizing the Learning Object Repository (LOR) Publish content to the Learning Object Repository (LOR). Search the Learning Object Repository (LOR). You will learn how to maximize your use of the Learning Object Repository (LOR) to add one document to several courses. This powerful tool then allows you to make corrections to the master document in the LOR which will then flow down to all courses in which it is linked. You can also use the LOR to build and store Springboard components that can be easily dropped into future courses. There will be a demonstration of how this tool is used in combination with a Trust agent to ensure copyright protection for music, video, and reserve documents. Andy Determine if you have documents that would be appropriate to use with the LOR. Create your own document and publish it to the LOR. Search the LOR for documents you might be able to utilize. Week 7 - Wednesday, October 23, 2013 Using Course Evaluations Learning Objective: Understand the process required to move your Student Course Evaluation (SCE) to online delivery. Examples of the various views of the Student Course Evaluation (SCE) system will be shared during this session. You will see what the online SCE looks like from the students perspective, as well as the instructor s interface. This will help you to understand what and when information will be available for you to access. You will see a demonstration of how to monitor the number of responses to date, and you will learn how to encourage participation. John K 3:00-3:30 Crafting Video Introductions Learning Objective: Compose a draft or outline for your video introduction. If you are planning to record a video bio, you are required to attend this session to prepare for the video as well as to sign up for your recording appointment. Tips for how to dress and how to practice will be provided. Jamie 3:30-4:00 Arrange for your SCE to be delivered online. Work on the script for you video bio.

8 Week 8 - Monday, October 28, 2013 Hidden Treasures of Springboard Investigate Springboard tools that are often overlooked. Implement frequently overlooked but useful Springboard features, tools, and settings in your courses. This session will cover many of the under-utilized but very useful tools and settings in Springboard. For example, you will learn about using the Date Manager, the Check List tool, Intelligent Agents, Release conditions, and more. Wendy Select one or two of the tools that were presented to include in your online classroom. Practice using the tools you selected. Week 8 - Wednesday, October 30, 2013 How to handle Copyright-protected content: Fair Use, e-reserves, and more Identify where to start when your content is copyright-protected. Review UA Films Online. Examine the Library s Custom Widget. The University of Akron Library will share information about services provided regarding Copyright materials and e-reserves. Bring your questions with you regarding copyright and ask the experts. You will also receive information about the comprehensive collection of UA Films Online that are available for linking in your online classroom. Learn how to link the Library s Custom Widgets on the homepages. Library 3::00-3:30 Finding Content you are Free to Use: Creative Commons Explore the different types of Creative Commons Licenses. Search for content that is covered by a Creative Commons License. Learn about the different types of Creative Commons Licenses available. A demonstration on how to search for images that are covered under a Creative Commons License will be provided as well. Steve 3:30-4:00 Search for Creative Commons License materials for your online classroom. Apply for your own Creative Commons License.

9 Week 9 - Monday, November 4, 2013 Monitoring User Progress Customize the user progress tool layout and settings. Employ the User Progress tool to meet current regulations related to attendance in online courses. Explore the features and settings of the User Progress tool and practice customizing the User Progress tool to meet your needs. You will also learn about the federal regulations for reporting last date of attendance for students receiving financial aid who fail or who stop attending. Wendy Determine which tools you want displayed on your Use Progress and customize it in your online classroom. Week 9 - Wednesday, November 6, 2013 Communicating Synchronously: Using Collaborate Learning Objective: Conduct Collaborate Web sessions. Join a live Collaborate session to simulate connecting with students in real time in your online course. You will learn how to use the various tools available, as well as talk about strategies for facilitating one-on-one as well as whole class meetings. Andy Sign up for your own Collaborate Classroom and place links in your online classroom. Practice using the various tools in your online classroom. View the training videos on the Collaborate website.

10 Week 10 - Monday, November 11, 2013 Online Teaching Tools: Interactive Lectures Learning Objective: Determine when to use a tool like Articulate Storyline to design interactive lectures. You will see examples of how third party software can be used to create specialized content for delivery in your online course. Patrick Evaluate your materials and determine if you will be using some type of interactive lectures in your online classroom. View online tutorials. Download a 30-day free trial and practice creating content. Week 10 - Wednesday, November 13, 2013 Online Teaching Tools: Web 2.0 Determine which Web 2.0 tools are most appropriate for use in your online course. Utilize one Web 2.0 toll to create content for your online course. Learn about web sites like Prezi, SlideRocket, Google Drive, TubeChop and more. You will have time to practice with a few of the tools demonstrated during the presentation to create customized materials for your online course. Steve Explore the various Web 2.0 tools and experiment with those most appropriate for your course content. DDS staff can assist in locating apps that will help implement the learning strategies for your specific discipline.

11 Week 11 - Monday, November 18, 2013 Apps for Teaching and Learning Select apps and tools to support the needs of your course Download and install an app either onto an ios device, or Google Chrome browser. Learn all about Apps that Desire2Learn has built as well as additional apps that can be used in your online classroom. These apps can help you add interactivity and engagement to your online class as well as provide a means of classroom management. Steve Explore the various apps available and determine if some may be useful to your online teaching process. Week 11 - Wednesday, November 20, 2013 Photo Shoot, Record your bio, and Open Lab During this session you will have a scheduled appointment to record your video bio. Please attend the session on crafting your bio and be ready to record. Jamie Participant Showcase During this session you will present an element of your online course to your peers. The goal is for your colleagues to see real world applications of the workshop material in practice to help everyone gain even more ideas. We will also include a workshop wrap up with resources for how to stay in contact with Design and Development Services, where to find information about future workshops, and time to answer any additional questions.
