Instructional Methods: This is an ONLINE course The course material will be presented through reading assignments in the required textbook, PowerPoint presentations, homework assignments, and exams. In order to successfully complete this course in an online environment, students must possess basic computer skills, the ability to follow written instructions, and be able to read for comprehension. Catalog Description: A study of fundamental accounting principles and procedures such as journalizing, posting, preparation of financial statements, and other selected topics. Accounting is emphasized as a service activity designed to provide the information about economic entities that is necessary for making sound decisions. Course Description: This course is designed to give the beginning business student a general understanding of the purpose of accounting, the ability to perform basic accounting functions, and a working knowledge in financial statement preparation. Major areas covered include: the accounting cycle, financial statements, control of cash, inventories, PP&E (property, plant, and equipment), current liabilities, and payroll. Student Learning Outcomes (with Assessment methodologies): Upon satisfactory completion of this course the student will: 1. Define the basic terminology, principles, theories and Assessed via exams and homework procedures used in double-entry accounting. 2. (Since this is an online course, all homework assignments will be graded immediately and you will be provided with feedback at the time you submit your assignment. 3 Course Requirements and Assessment: In order to successfully complete this course in an online environment, students must possess basic computer skills, the ability to follow written instructions, and be able to read for comprehension. In addition, your mastery of the student learning outcomes listed in the table at the bottom of page 1 of this syllabus will be assessed using the following methods: Syllabus Quiz This is the first required assignment. After carefully reading all of the course syllabus, please complete the syllabus quiz found under Quizzes in D2L. The syllabus quiz requires Respondus Lockdown Browser (see page 5 of this syllabus for instructions on how to install this browser). One of the purposes of the syllabus quiz is to make certain you have installed Respondus Lockdown Browser on your computer and you are familiar with how it works. Each of the exams in this course must be completed using Respondus Lockdown Browser. When taking the quiz, you should notice that you are not allowed to move backwards in the quiz (ie: you must answer each question as it is presented to you). This will also be true of all exam questions. Please also note that the syllabus quiz, like the exams, has a time limit. However, since this is very likely your first experience with using Respondus Lockdown Browser, the time limit for this quiz will be much longer than the time limit for the exams. You can earn up to points if you complete the syllabus quiz prior to 11:55 pm on January 11, Intro to CNOW Assignment On CNOW, you will find an assignment called, Intro to CNOW. This has been created and assigned to ensure that you have course access on CNOW to view and complete all homework assignments. This assignment gives you an overview to how the CNOW program works, and will not require you to know accounting-specific content. Please watch the video and answer the questions related to the use of CNOW. You can earn up to points toward your course grade if you complete this assignment prior to 11:55 pm on January 15, Homework Each chapter will have a graded homework assignment that must be completed using CNOW (see login instructions below). Each assignment will be worth points. The submission deadline for all assignments will be 11:55 pm on the day they are due. Late homework will not be accepted for any reason. I have provided a tentative course outline on page 6 of this syllabus to help you know when each assignment is due. Also, the due date for each assignment is clearly specified in CNOW. You may submit your answers for each graded assignment up to two times prior to the due date (each submission allows you to check your work three times). If you submit an assignment multiple times only the best grade will be recorded in the gradebook. Each chapter will also have an optional practice homework assignment. The practice assignment will contain identical questions, exercises and problems as the graded assignment. The purpose of the practice assignment is to allow you to check your work and receive feedback an unlimited number of times. I recommend that you complete each practice set and fully understand both the concepts and procedures before attempting the graded sets. Students who utilize the practice assignments as a riskfree environment, in which learning, rather than point gathering is the focus, typically perform much better on the exams. 4 Exams Five exams have been scheduled for this course. The respective date for each exam is listed on the tentative course outline on page 6 of this syllabus. The exams are located in the Quizzes section of D2L. On the day of each exam, you will have access to the exam between 12 NOON and 11:55 PM. You must access and complete the exam during this period using Respondus Lockdown Browser. Each exam will have a time limit, so be sure you take note of this limit before beginning each exam. There are no acceptable reasons for missing exams; the only exceptions are those approved by the university with documentation and prior approval by the instructor at least one week in advance of the scheduled exam date. If a student misses an exam, a score of zero will be recorded in the gradebook for that exam. Optional Study Tools (NO points are assigned to any of these items) The Study Tools Section in CengageNOW contains self-assessment tools (ie: electures, flashcards, games, practice quizzes, and videos) that you can use to enhance your progress toward mastering the course objectives. These tools can greatly increase your understanding of the course material and prepare you for the exams. At the end of each chapter in the text, there are additional homework problems, similar to the online assignments. You should work additional relevant problems at the end of each chapter until you have mastered the course material. I have made available in CNOW all of the Practice Exercises and Exercises for each chapter. You can work these problems as many times as you wish and receive immediate feedback. Practice Quizzes are located in the quizzes section of D2L. These quizzes contain multiple choice, true/false, and matching questions. You may take these quizzes multiple times, as they are not graded or timed. Past students have commented that they have used these quizzes to prepare for the exams and found them to be helpful. A discussion forum has been created in D2L for each of the chapters we will cover. The purpose of these discussion forums is to be a place where you can ask questions and receive feedback from other students in the class. Often student-to-student feedback and collaboration produces both the quickest response as well as the deepest learning. Cheating - an act of deception by which a student misrepresents that he or she has mastered information on an academic enterprise which in fact, she or he has not mastered. Plagiarism -- Taking ownership of one s work even though the words, ideas or arguments are from another person. Facilitating Academic Dishonesty -- Those who intentionally or knowingly help or attempt to help another to commit an act of academic dishonesty.
