2 Learning Objectives Students successfully completing this course will be able to: 1. Read, write and pronounce the letters and corresponding sounds of the German alphabet; 2. Understand through listening and reading simple statements, questions, commands and requests; be able to make simple statements to ask and answer yes/no and special questions and make requests and give commands; 3. Understand and hold a simple conversation about daily routine and home; family and friends, university life and studies, languages and nationalities; 4. Read and understand common public signs and notices; 5. Understand basic personal correspondence; 6. Communicate about present and past German events, and appreciate basics of Germanic culture. Rationale for Revision* To increase language course options available to students and to be able to offer this course as part of the UW-Extension Collaborative Language Program (CLP). The requested revisions will bring the course into congruence with other foreign language courses offered on campus and through the CLP. Replaces existing course numbers: GER-121 and GER-122. In short, explain why this is a general education course. All foreign language courses offered on campus and through the CLP, including Elementary German I, involve: the study and application of expressive and receptive language skills, most often exercised in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. These fundamental skills are basic to human development and academic functioning. Criteria: To satisfy GE requirements for Communication Skills, courses must be general in nature. A course must include at least one of the following as the primary instructional purpose: The study and application of reading and writing skills in a designated language. Delivery of general addresses to an audience in a designated language. The study and acquisition of general receptive language skills in a designated language. 5/7

7 Global Perspective Yes No GLP components are either an integral feature of the course, to be used throughout the course, or equivalent to at least one third of the course content/coverage Addressing the new GLP criteria: Through the study of German, students will meet the Global Perspectives Requirement (GLP) by helping students develop an understanding of the deeply interconnected nature of the world ; specifically, it will address Global Self-Awareness (1.C) cultural diversity, and Global Engagement (4.A). Objective 1.C: Unit 2 and Unit 6 will acquaint students with the German cultural attributes and introduce them to diverse voices through grammar mastery and elementary readings. Objective 4.A: Units 1-6 will acquaint students with how Germanic speakers and writers perceive the world and communicate verbally and non-verbally these perceptions. Through the study of German, students will learn the rediments of German history and become familiar with aspects of German cutture and social mores. Through learning vocabulary and practicing conversation, students will "appreciate cultural, economic, political, environmental and social differences" and develop "an understanding of another culture." Students will acquire these attributes throughout the course, but especially in units 2 and 6. Learning a second language at the college level and developing an understanding of another culture provides students with skills they will use in international situations. 7/7
