2 KEYNOTE SPEAKER Donalyn Miller Donalyn Miller has worked with a wide variety of upper elementary and middle school students and currently teaches fifth grade at O.A. Peterson Elementary in Fort Worth, Texas. In her popular book, The Book Whisperer, Donalyn reflects on her journey to become a reading teacher and describes how she inspires and motivates her middle school students to read 40 or more books a year. In her latest book, Reading in the Wild, Donalyn collects responses from 900 adult readers and uses this information to teach lifelong reading habits to her students. Donalyn currently facilitates the community blog, The Nerdy Book Club and co-writes a monthly column for Scholastic s Principal-to-Principal Newsletter.s The Reading Teacher, Educational Conference Theme: Creativity in the Common Core: Teaching the Literacy Standards with Imagination and Joy With all the pressures facing teachers today, it is easy to get away from the true core of good teaching: helping all students to see the wonder in reading, writing and learning. What do you do in your classroom that exemplifies this ideal? To help bring the focus back to these core values, the sessions from this conference will show how teacher and student imagination and joy can be integrated into the teaching of the Reading and Writing Common Core State Standards. 2

ELEMENTARY INCLUDES ALL AREAS OF COMPREHENSION, VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT, CONTENT AREA READING, CRITICAL READING, METACOGNITION, INTERVENTION STRATEGIES, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNS, ASSESSMENT, READING, WRITING AND TEACHING, INTERVENTION STRATEGIES, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, ASSESSMENT, READING, WRITING AND TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR THIS LEVEL OF LEARNER. ADOLESCENT INCLUDES ALL AREAS OF COMPREHENSION, WORD STUDY, VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT, CONTENT AREA READING, CRITICAL READING, STUDY STRATEGIES, METACOGNITION, INTERVENTION STRATEGIES, ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, ASSESSMENT, READING, WRITING AND TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR THIS LEVEL OF LEARNER. TECHNOLOGY AND LITERACY INCLUDES THE APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA AS IT RELATES FOR ALL LEARNERS. Please Note There will be four Breakout Sessions. Each session will be 50 minutes long with two sessions in the morning and two in the afternoon. Each presenter will offer his/her program twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Proposals are due on or before June 30, Send completed proposal as a PDF to Elizabeth Cochran at efcochra@kent.edu. No hard copies. If you are selected, handouts must be submitted by October 10, 2014 and will be posted on the Conference website Presenters must bring their own handouts; 50 copies is recommended. Presenters receive free conference admissions and lunch. No formal registration is required. Reading Conference registration opens June 1, $110 regular admissions, $40 full time students from KSU, YSU, AU & CSU. Go to Online registration ONLY.
