1 The Egyptian American International School 5 th Compound, New Cairo, Kattameyya Telephone , , English Language Grade 9 September June 2016 Office Hours: To be announced We have recently adopted and are working to implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), which are a set of learning expectations for college and career success that were developed by American education experts. Over the next few years you will notice some changes to teaching and testing in our school that will directly impact your child. It is important that you know about these changes and the resources available to help you support your child. We look forward to sharing more information on CCSS in the months and years ahead as we implement these new learning standards. I. Course Description Upon successful completion of ninth grade English, Language students will have improved their speaking, reading, writing, listening, and vocabulary skills. The course will take the students through various essential writing skills in diverse areas. Twenty first century skills will be implemented. These include critical thinking, creativity, technology, learning for life, collaboration, communication, etc. II. Course Textbook McDougal Littell, "Language Network"., Usage, and Mechanics Wordskills Holt McDougal Literature III. Course Objectives By the end of the school year, students will be able to: A) : Use correct conventions of standard grammar including phrases and clauses, verbs and demonstrate this in speaking and writing. Use correct punctuation, capitalization, and spelling when writing. B) : 1 of 6

2 Apply the writing process, plan, write and revise narrative, informative/explanatory, argumentative texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information. Clearly and accurately analyze content through effective selection and organization. Conduct short and sustained research projects to answer a question or solve a problem; narrow or broaden the inquiry when appropriate; synthesize multiple sources on the subject, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation. Use journal responses for exploration and analysis of personal experience. Present information, findings, and supporting evidence. C) Speaking and Listening: Participate in group discussions and activities to develop critical perspectives, a clear sense of audience, and a fluent and effective style. Plan and present a speech. IV. Course Requirements Punctuality Organized class participation All assignments must be completed on time following the guidelines set by the teacher. No messy or untidy work will be accepted under any circumstances. V. Course Grading Grading System: The main grading system is based on G.P.A. of each student and the GPA of each year is based on the following:- Semester Exams (40% - 20% each) Mid Semester Exams (10% - 5% each) The four quarters (50% % each) 2 of 6 The grade of each quarter is based on the following: Test and Quizzes (50%) Class Work and Class Participation (20%) Homework and Projects (20%) Behavior (10%) Tests and Quizzes 50% (25% Tests/ 25% Quizzes) Types of tests and quizzes include: Formal classroom testing (an average of 2-3 quizzes/tests per term) Other forms of comprehensive assessment: essays, projects, presentations All tests and quizzes are sent home to be signed. Class Participation 20%: This grade is divided as follows: Warm Up CP1 Preparation, interaction, oral and written work habits (based on EAIS rubric) CP2 Binder / Copybook check Absences are deducted from the CP grade based on number of classes missed. Homework 20%:

3 Homework is anything done at home, assigned regularly and can come in the following forms: Worksheets / text book / writing / critical thinking assignments to be solved at home Projects and independent study and research Assigned reading & studying Journals SAT Practice NOTE: PLAIGIRISED work can cause a student to get a zero and he/she will not be given the chance to redo his assignment. Behavior 10%: Grading for behavior is based on EAIS behavior rubric. VI. 5 Making New Words Your Own (Lessons 8-12) Argumentative : Persuasive Essay Informative Text: Research Paper English Language Grade 9 Supply List Supply List: One binder to be divided into: I. Language: warm ups &Notes Worksheets vocabulary Worksheets Hand outs Essays and Journals Tests and Quizzes III. Pens, pencils, erasers, highlighters. IV. A4 sheets of paper and plastic sleeves Dividers should be used to clearly divide each section of the binder. Your binder must be organized in the same way listed above. In addition, all material must be filed in chronological order by date the latest being at the bottom of each section. Grades will be deducted in case you do not bring your binders to class or in case your binder is incomplete or disorganized. All sheets MUST have your: Name Date Class Title Marks will be deducted for the absence of any of the above. Marks will also be deducted for use of illegible handwriting and lack of neatness and organization. You should have access to a computer and a printer. All final essays MUST be typed and printed following a specific format. No soft copies will be accepted.
