2 Business Contracts in English Thursday, & Friday , 9:00-17:00 Content and aim of the workshop This seminar is designed to assist the professional in understanding the basic principles behind the modern use of so-called boilerplate clauses in international contracts. It is structured in the form of a series of case studies taken from the business world to allow a maximum of hands on experience in using the language. The seminar starts off with an analysis of the basic steps in contract formation and discusses the individual types of boilerplates used. Participants will be provided with examples of model boilerplates. The workshop is designed for those who are involved in international contracts in their company or institution. presenter Stuart Bugg, B.A., LL.B (Hons), M.Jur (Dist) was born in Kingston-upon-Hull, England. 3 ReMaT research management training for early-career researchers Tuesday, & Wednesday, , 9:00-16:00 Content and aim of the workshop Responding to the ever increasing demand for complementary skills training for those starting their research career, ReMaT is an intensive two-day workshop comprising of five modules which introduces students to research management topics and skills now considered essential for a career in research, or to make the transition from research into other functions. The modules cover: contexts of modern research and career perspectives; project management; intellectual property rights; grant acquisition, and exploitation and commercialisation of research. Implicit in the workshop is skills development in social interaction and networking. ReMaT is especially tailored to meet the needs of early-stage researchers especially from the 2nd year of PhD studies onwards, but is also suitable for others involved in research, or in directing research. presenter Monica Schofield, CEng FIET, Director International Cooperation and EU Office at Tutech Since 1999 Monica has been giving professional advice on the preparation of proposals for European funding, for both researchers and enterprises. Since 1995 she has given well over 100 workshops on research and innovation management and research policy across Europe. Dr Margarete Remmert-Rieper, PhD in chemistry, Senior Consultant at TuTech Since 2006 Margarete has been responsible for for the business development of research and innovation related training programmes. Margarete has extensive experience as a trainer and in European projects aimed at improving collaboration between universities, business and government. The workshop will deal with the principles of "boilerplates" and standard types of contract clauses along with issues of liability. It will look at the purpose behind the typical boilerplate clauses as well as the preferred formulations and, where relevant, discuss the relevance of the Common Law clauses in the German/Civil Law context. The workshop is designed for those who are involved in international contracts in their company or institution. 5 How to develop a strategic plan for funding your research Content and aim of the workshop Tuesday, :00 16:30 This workshop explores the concept of strategy in the research context. Having a clear idea of your research direction facilitates aligning even small projects to larger goals, making individual proposals more compelling. It will also help to avoid the trap of letting funding dictate your research focus which leads to a fragmented track record. The goal of the workshop is to provide guidance on how to approach the development of a strategic funding plan in the individual research setting. Participants will learn how to apply key elements of strategy to develop their research agenda, identify a portfolio of funding opportunities to be pursued in the coming years and manage the grant life cycle systematically to build the resources and capabilities necessary to deliver long-term sustainable research. This workshop is designed for postdoctoral researchers who intend to consolidate their research career. presenter Dr. Thomas Koch, offers expert training and consultancy services for research management in international higher education. 6 Content and Aim of the Creating Value from Knowledge Wednesday, , 9:00-16:30 The workshop aims to give an understanding of what it means to translate knowledge, or ideas, into something that creates wealth - in other words innovation. An important outcome of the workshop will be the participants ability to be able to relate to how business views knowledge. The aim is to challenge the participants thinking and perceptions of innovation to help them understand what it takes to exploit knowledge, and why support functions like technology transfer offices exist in universities to help this process. The workshop aims to be very practical and interactive in nature, giving participants skills and understanding that they themselves can apply rather than business theory, though current business approaches to innovation will be discussed. Particularly for early-stage researchers, e.g. PhD candidates or post docs. Also relevant for those who have little experience of business thinking.
