1 2015/2016 Syllabus, Policies, and Procedures 8th Grade Logic and Economics M W 11:00 11:50 AM CST Course Summary Economics is studied with emphasis placed on teaching students responsible fiscal management in their personal lives, as they develop a more sophisticated understanding of economic principles and policies. In addition to economics, the student s study of logic presented in a manner geared toward Junior High students continues, developing a foundation for reasoning in the truth. Topics include recognition of types of argument and the identification of informal fallacies. Contact Information Instructor: Mrs. Robyn Sims Teacher Talk: Mondays, 2:00 2:30 PM CST Materials Needed Intermediate Logic 3rd Edition Student Textbook, Economics in One Lesson book, a three ring binder to keep all course work together. General Rules 1. Extensions on deadlines for items to be submitted must come from the parents and are only granted for emergencies. See your Parent/Student Handbook for what constitutes an emergency. 2. Please come to class prepared each day with the required materials needed for that lesson. 3. You are always welcome to ask questions during the lectures. It will only enhance your learning of the subject even more if you take advantage of live class to gain understanding of the lessons. The primary way to ask a question in class is to raise your hand and wait to be called on to speak. However, we will have very limited time in class, so you are also encouraged to attend Teacher Talk for extra time to get questions answered that we may not have time for in lecture. 4. You are expected to refrain from disruptive behavior, chatting with other students during lecture, or any other unacceptable conduct. If enabled, the Chat Box will be used for directing comments or questions to me, not to other students. 5. Please submit all files as type: pdf 6. Be sure to check the Announcements tab frequently. This is where you will always know what s expected of you for live class and for homework. If a change is made to an existing assignments sheet, I will let you know there has been a change.

2 7. Please be familiar with the 2015/2016 FPE Parent/Student Handbook. Most questions that are asked can be answered having first read the handbook. Grading Policies 1. All work due is to be submitted through Canvas and not later than the due date assigned. All times due will be for that designated date by 10:59 PM CST. 2. All short answer/essay questions for review, quizzes, and tests need to be answered in accordance with 7th grade mastery of writing skills. Answers should be in complete sentences with well thought out organization of ideas. 3. When drawing diagrams, do so with as much accuracy as possible. Label all parts so that you can visually see the diagram. 4. You may seek outside help with a tutor, parent, Google, or Youtube. However, your submitted assignments and tests should be your own work. 5. It is imperative that you keep up with your assignments as we will be moving quickly and writing quite a bit. You will benefit greatly from studying frequently. Getting behind will quickly snowball and get you into a position of frustration and anxiety that will be difficult to recover. 6. Homework assignments constitute 25% of the final grade, tests and projects make up 45%, and quizzes weigh the final 30% of the grade. Homework and tests will ordinarily be submitted by being scanned and uploaded unless otherwise noted. A Note from your teacher. Hello Parents and Students, I m eager to start a brand new year at FPE and am so excited to be working with you. I hope to be as much help as I can to you as a parent, supporting you in your God given call to promote an excellent education for your child. It is my hope this year to make your child s math experience a rewarding one. Success in this course will take hard work, study, commitment, and practice on the part of the student. Logic can be a somewhat difficult subject and is not to be taken lightly. Economics will, as well, require critical thinking. Having said that...students, I will give you my best and in turn expect that you would give me yours. Let s do this! Be determined in your own mind that you can achieve this. Work diligently and I know you will see good fruit from your labor. Welcome to 8th Grade Logic and Economics! Let s have a super year! Mrs. Sims
