3 Head s Welcome Letter Dear Colleague Thank you for expressing an interest in the post of Dance Teacher at Milton Keynes Academy. The aim of the Academies programme was to transform educational attainment and contribute to the regeneration of local communities. At Milton Keynes, we opened in a state of the art, bespoke designed, 27 million pound building with the very best educational resources and ICT facilities on 1 st September, In the development of our education strategy we are supported by Edge. Edge is an independent education foundation. It is dedicated to raising the status of practical and vocational learning, so that all young people have the opportunity to achieve their potential, and the UK's workforce is equipped with the skills to be successful in the modern economy. We specialise in Business and Enterprise and have very well developed links with local business and industry which provides very special opportunities for our students. Edge believes that 'learning by doing' is as important as academic learning, and that there are many paths to success. See for more detail. Our mission is to make this a reality for the young people in our community. The Academy is organised around a series of learning villages, with specialist provision for Science, Art and Design, PE and the Performing Arts. We offer an innovative and flexible curriculum. Students complete Key Stage 3 in two years and have a three year Key Stage 4 programme including early entry for some students in Year 10 and a personalised Year 11 programme. We offer post-16 provision through our state-of-the-art Sixth Form Studio 6. The Performing Arts Department has recently achieved Artsmark Gold. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Teacher of Performing Arts who specialises in Dance. Experience in teaching GCSE Dance would be an advantage. The ideal applicant will be passionate about Performing Arts and will wish to be fully involved in all aspects of the delivery of our curriculum and extra- curricular programme. As a subject teacher, you will have high standards and high aspirations for our students. You will work in a purpose built suite of rooms, including an impressive dance studio, bespoke drama studios and well equipped music and practice rooms, in a self contained Performing Arts Village. As a member of the Milton Keynes Academy teaching team you will be well supported by the senior leadership team who are focussed on teaching and learning. You will be supported by a support staff team who assist you as a teacher in the classroom and in lessons to make outstanding progress. 4 The Academy s Vision and Ethos The Milton Keynes Academy is distinctive and identified by the adoption of four key principles. 1. Enterprise based Milton Keynes Academy is able to demonstrate to the whole school and local community the benefits of providing high quality practical learning for all students. It will develop a national reputation for delivering high quality innovative business and enterprise learning, providing students with broad skills they need for future success at work and in life. The Academy will: Bring local employers into the heart of the school. Make the best out of all the available resources whether they are found in: students, staff, parents, the local community, local employers or other educational organisations. Innovate and compete to be the lead school in enterprise education, aiming for national recognition. Empower all staff and students to take an active role and responsibility for their learning and be actively involved in the school. Build close links and strategic partnerships with local and national employers to bring the world of enterprise to life within the school and to take the students out to the world of work. 2. Community based Milton Keynes Academy is at the heart of the local community, building pride and encouraging the development of talent in the area, and acting as a catalyst for regeneration. The engagement of local business at the heart of the school combined with the school acting as a focus for the community will create energy in the campus. Students will be able to see the value and relevance of their studies to the outside world and vice versa. The Academy will: Actively involve the local community. Be a lead learning resource for the local community, ensuring such learning benefits the local community. The school has a unique opportunity to engage with the parents of pupils, many of whom do not have English as a first language and offer family learning. There will be close collaboration with the local FE College over the provision of adult learning classes, sports provision etc.
5 Link with all education providers in the area to deliver the best educational solutions for the community. In particular there will be strong links with the local community s primary schools, ensuring a smooth transition for Year 7 students, and the neighbouring FE College, ensuring a wide range of outstanding vocational learning options. Have an open admissions policy in line with Milton Keynes Local Authority s policy for all students regardless of ability, educational needs or background. Ensure effective feedback mechanisms, including through a strong school council, so that the experiences and views of students, parents and other local residents and employers inform the school s development and teaching and learning practice. 3. High Achieving Milton Keynes Academy sets high expectations for every student and member of staff, tailoring learning to particular needs, abilities and aspirations. It is innovative in its curriculum and uses its close links with employers and the local community to motivate pupils. The Academy will: Make the education, development and welfare of young people its absolute priority. Treat each student and member of staff as an individual, ensuring each has a clear learning path for success which is actively reviewed. Aim for and celebrate high achievement in all aspects of school activity whether they are academic, practical and vocational, artistic, sporting or social. Strive for excellence in both academic studies and vocational programmes which lead to further or higher education and successful life careers. Ensure each student has effective guidance and support to succeed in their learning, future employment and lifelong aspirations. 4. Learning for All Culture The Academy has respect for all learners. All the adults and young people involved in the Academy are encouraged to work in a spirit of cooperation and partnership, respecting each other s values and skills. Be open, responsive and welcoming. Invest in training for all staff.
6 The Academy uses its entire staff of qualified teachers, teaching assistants and other staff as a substantial learning and teaching resource. Operate an extended school day with a target of twenty eight hours study per week through ICT to Academy learning resources. Celebrate success of all kinds. Learn from other educational providers both in UK and overseas. The Academy benefits from links to its sponsor Edge in terms of PR both local and national. It also benefits from links to other Edge education programmes in the areas of career guidance, teacher training, enterprise education and work experience.
7 Job Description Post: Subject Teacher Accountable to: Subject Leader / Head of Learning or Specialist Village PURPOSE 1. Inspire students to achieve their very best. 2. Ensure all teaching is rated good or better. 3. Ensure all students make outstanding progress and achieve challenging targets. 4. Fully implement all Academy policies and procedures. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES There are seven main areas of responsibility: 1. Ethos 1. To create an exciting learning environment. 2. To include all students. 3. To create relationships based on mutual respect. 4. To be an effective part of the team. 5. To manage own professional development. 2. Curriculum and Planning 1. To work with others to plan highly effective lessons, Schemes of Work and Curriculum Maps. 2. To review own lessons and effectiveness of own planning. 3. To contribute to development of Curriculum, Homework and Enterprise Projects. 4. To plan with LSAs to meet individual students on Additional Needs Register. 3. Teaching and Learning 1. To fully implement all Academy policies and procedures. 2. To make effective use of resources, including ICT. 3. To take part in peer skill exchanges, observations, coaching and mentoring. 4. To ensure all students can engage and achieve in lessons. 4. Standards and Achievement 1. To ensure students make outstanding progress. 2. To implement all actions following reviews of student progress. 5. Assessment 1. To fully implement the Academy policy and procedures to a high standard. 2. To plan for assessment for learning in every lesson. 3. To ensure levelling is accurate.
8 6. Enterprise 1. To lead the Tutor Group in Enterprise Projects. 2. To encourage and acknowledge enterprise attitudes in other staff and students. 3. To develop enterprising attitudes in students. 7. Liaison 1. To work closely with all support colleagues. 2. To work collaboratively with Village staff in sharing ideas and best practice. 3. A competence in the job demonstrated by the necessary level of skills, experience or qualifications (including Qualified Teacher Status) 2.
