Individual Coaching Guide P age 1 THANK YOU FOR YOU! You have probably heard It is more blessed to give than to receive. You now have the opportunity to find out how true it is! You are giving not only of your time, but also yourself in helping those who are at a crossroads in their career to hear and follow God s calling. This Coaching Guide is to train and equip you to successfully work with these Explorers! TOOLS FOR THE COACH The 2010 Crossroads Career Workbook, MAXimize Your CAREER is the foundation of this Coaching Guide. The Workbook is the heart of the program and includes scripture verses, individual reflective exercises, devotionals, and tips and suggestions to help you help those who are at a crossroads in their career. Highlighted links throughout refer Explorers to online tools to access, providing you an even greater kit of resources to help them through the exploration process. Your job as a Coach is to guide your Explorer(s) through the Orientation/Introduction and 6 Steps, which will equip your Explorer(s) to experience God s presence as they journey through the crossroads in their careers and maximize their career potential! Each time you meet with the Explorer, you ll both refer to the Workbook throughout the session. The Materials for Coaching section of this Guide were created to help increase your effectiveness and include the following: Summary Highlights of Each Session is an indexed reference for Coaches to help meet the Explorer s needs. It may be helpful to review it each week, to ensure you are focused in leading your coaching discussion. The Workbook has been thoughtfully crafted to lead the Explorer through the 6-Step process, with the outcome of their clarity on their life purpose and next-steps. Ensuring the Explorer completes a Step in its entirety before progressing to the next will keep them moving forward in the right direction! The Career Explorer Questionnaire is a central starting place. It contains basic contact information for the Explorer, and allows you to begin foundational dialogue about where the Explorer is spiritually, in their life purpose, and along their career path. A Coaching Session Checklist provides an overall framework for leading the coaching conversation. For new Coaches, you may want to practice using this format in a role-playing situation before actually coaching your first Explorer. Experienced Coaches may have a format they are already comfortable with; use what you believe is most effective in your situation and most natural for your personal style! Relax; allow the Holy Spirit to lead you both throughout the process Additional thoughts and insights can be noted on the Weekly Progress Review Worksheet. This is helpful for the Explorers to think strategically about what has been accomplished, set goals for the next week and consider what successes and challenges they have faced. Explorers may find it difficult to accurately gauge how much time they have actually committed to the program versus other reading, phone conversations, and Internet search activities. Encourage the Explorer to spend at least one hour per day on the process, and they can note that on the Weekly Progress Review Worksheet. The Master Worksheet has been created to help Explorers track their individual progress in completing the exercises, activities and devotionals. Encourage the Explorer to use the Master Worksheet as they progress through their individual study time. By checking off what they have completed on the Worksheet, they can see what still needs to be completed Step-by-Step.

Individual Coaching Guide P age 2 GETTING STARTED AN EASY 4-PART PROCESS Regardless if this is the first time or the hundredth time you have coached another individual, the following 4-part process will help you do your best job for the Explorers, for God - the one who really matters, and for yourself! The four parts are highlighted in the diagram below and explained in detail on the next page. Pray Praise Prep Perform

Individual Coaching Guide P age 3 1. Part One is to Pray! It always begins with prayer. Only God can change the hearts of men and women, and prayer is your most powerful tool. As the Coach, this is your logical starting place. Your primary responsibility is to love and encourage the Explorer(s) you are working with. People want to know how much you care before they care how much you know. Besides praying on your own, you may want to pray collectively with your ministry team, and ask your pastor and prayer team to pray with and for you, too! 2. Part Two is to Prepare. The first time you lead the series, plan additional time preparing, especially for the first two sessions. Feel free to write in your Workbook your own additional stories and examples that you may want to share! Most of all let the Holy Spirit guide you through each session. He will give you the words to say if you let Him. This is why prayer is so key to your preparation! If you have not registered yet as a volunteer, please do so now to gain access to all of the pertinent resources to grow your ministry and help explorers. 1. Go to 2. From the Register Now tab, select Ministry Team Registration from the Drop-down menu. 3. Select the name of your church from the options listed on the page 4. Enter your registration key that your church/ministry leader provided you. 5. Write down your login and password Password Download the 2010 Crossroads Career Workbook and review each chapter in advance of your meeting so you will be able to comfortably discuss it with the Explorer(s). What questions are you drawn to? What relevant personal experiences can you share with them? Make notes and be prepared to share. 3. Part Three is to Perform. Again, this Coaching Guide has been compiled to make your role as a Coach as easy as possible. Your role is not to have all the answers, it is to present the content elements, then ask reflective questions of the Explorer to get them to think about the application of the content, to THEIR lives! The discussion questions will raise some interesting conversation. However, you can lose focus during dialogue if the topic drifts or the opinions presented do not represent biblical teaching. Don t discourage people by suggesting that their opinions are inappropriate; gently guide the conversation back to a related point covered in the study. 4. Part Four is to Praise. At the end of each session, praise our God with the other members of your prayer and ministry team. Praise Him for each Explorer, for their focus and participation, for prayer requests submitted by the Explorer, and for your ability to complete each session. Just as you will discuss with the Explorers, our God wants to be involved in all the details, so thank Him for being in the details for you!

Individual Coaching Guide P age 4 FREEDOM AROUND A FRAMEWORK The 2010 Crossroads Career Workbook is organized around an Introduction and 6-Step Process, represented by the visual below. Refer to it as you continue to follow through this Coaching Guide. Make notes on the Workbook pages as you go along, to help you grasp the concepts and gain confidence in the format.

Individual Coaching Guide P age 5 YOUR ROLE IN LEADING AN EXPLORER THOUGH THE INTRODUCTION AND 6 STEPS Love and Encourage Your primary responsibility is to love and encourage those whom you are coaching. Explorers will be more receptive to spiritual truth when they have been loved. They want to know how much a leader cares before they care how much a leader knows. Be Prepared Work though every part of the 2010 Workbook before meeting with the Explorer. Review the questions and come up with a few of your own. Stay open to questions that the Explorer has, too Before the Introduction/Orientation Meeting Schedule the time and place for the orientation meeting and six sessions. Confirm the Explorer s registration by ing or calling them in advance and giving them the Career Explorer Questionnaire to complete and bring to the meeting. Determine if you will either have them download the Workbook, or if you will provide it for them. At Your First Coaching Meeting Have this Coaching Guide, your 2010 Workbook, and your Bible with you. Too many loose pieces of paper, extra notes and handouts will be cumbersome, and you could even get confused during your meeting. Trust your instincts and pray throughout the program! Preparing for Each Coaching Session This Coaching Guide has been designed to make your leading coaching sessions simple! Each coaching session has been designed to last approximately one hour. Remember this is not a race; you want to finish well! If you have flexibility, some of your meetings may run a little longer and some might be shorter. If you get a bit behind because of the amount of discussion, assign more homework, and ask the Explorer about it next week. The Explorer should be taking notes during your meetings, marking down the exercises you are working through, and writing down their assignments for the next meeting. It is not your job to own those tasks! The Coaching Sessions Checklist, provided in the Coaching Materials section will help you to pace yourself through the material in each Step, in a conversation with a natural flow. It is NOT required to begin with the Introduction/Orientation and move sequentially through the program. It is highly recommended that you DO take the Explorer through the Introduction and Step 1, then move through the remaining Steps in a way most effective for the Explorer, and based on their own career search efforts prior to your working together in this coaching relationship. After the Coaching Session Pray for your Explorer by name during every week along with specific prayer requests, if applicable. Begin your preparation for the next week s session, and just focus on taking it one week at a time! Coaching in Response to Questions In addition to structured weekly sessions through the 6 Steps, you will also encounter people with questions. Instead of giving answers, use the Workbook as a reference guide to coach people wherever they are in process. Remember As a Coach, it is also important to remember what you are not! Not on call 24x7 Not a trainer one who instructs or trains Not a counselor one who is engaged in or whose profession is counseling Not responsible for Career Explorers getting a job or changing careers Not responsible for solving Career Explorers problems Please do not do the work for the Explorers or tell them what direction or job to take. Your role as a Coach is to lead by asking questions so Explorers find what is right for them. God is the ONLY ONE with all the answers!

SUMMARY HIGHLIGHTS OF EACH STEP Sessions and Titles Content Description Meet the Explorer s Need ORIENTATION (Introduction) This is the time to confirm the Explorer s commitment to participate in and complete the course. Be energetic about what is to come. Do your best to create an environment where career explorers feel safe and are energized about walking through this process. Show the Explorer that you are committed to them even more than you are to the process or the specifics of the agenda 1 ATTITUDE Accept Loss & Opportunity 2 APTITUDE Discover Your Strengths 3 ALTITUDE Target Marketing 4 SEARCHING Find Opportunities 5 SORTING Two-Way Interviews 6 SELECTING Walk in Work Prepared for You CELEBRATION EVENT (OPTIONAL) The Explorer will begin acknowledging and dealing with feelings such as anger and fear while starting to think about their goals and future. Explorers complete three kinds of assessments including the Career Direct Online assessment and summarize their most important personal gifts and qualities. Explorers use results of the Step 2 assessments to begin researching occupations and industries in which they might work. They can consider traditional and non-traditional types of work. Using several recommended websites, they will develop 2-3 career targets. They also begin developing their resume, search letters, and a 30- second Resume. Explorers continue fine-tuning their resumes, letters and 30-Second Resumes. They will also identify networking contacts and begin making networking contacts. They will learn about additional ways of finding opportunities. Explorers continue making networking contacts. They develop answers to common, challenging interview questions and compile a list of people who can be references for them. Explorers learn techniques for analyzing and evaluating opportunities that may be offered. They also learn some negotiating skills. The focus is on considering opportunities in light of what they believe God wants them to do. The Explorer celebrates around a meal or party that they completed the course. Assess whether the Explorer has dealt with feelings related to his/her career transition. The Explorer may need to talk through further what happened and how he/she feels about it. If he/she seems unable to deal with the feelings or seems stuck, suggest talking to a professional Christian counselor Determine whether the Explorer seems well suited for the kind of work he/she is pursuing or whether he/she knows what kind of work he/she wants to do. The Career Direct Online Guidance System or other assessment can be very helpful in this area. This is an important step because it may directly impact a person s discovering his/her calling! Does the Explorer have a resume that is effectively targeted toward the desired job marketplace? While you may, if you feel competent in this area, critique the person s resume and offer suggestions, it is NOT your role to write the resume. Does the Explorer have a network of contacts with which to begin networking? Help the person think through everyone he/she knows, including relatives, friends, business associates (if appropriate), neighbors, etc. He/she may have a larger network than he/she was aware of. Suggest other contacts when possible, and help the Explorer develop and practice his/her 30-second resume. The Explorer may need guidance organizing his/her job search. Is the Explorer getting interviews? What are the outcomes of the interviews? Does he/she need to practice answering typical interview questions? Suggest that the person practice with a family member, friend or another Explorer. Is the Explorer getting offers? The material in this Step can help him/her think through decision criteria. Do not advise the person on which offer to take or refuse! Once an offer has been accepted, help them identify good behaviors and attitudes for beginning the new job. If offers are not coming, assess whether the Explorer has really effectively moved through the previous five steps? Where is the real need? And the real gaps? The Explorer should feel encouraged that they learned about themselves and made progress. Discuss next steps, and how the Explorer can pass it forward to others who are searching.
