1 Module List (Modules taught in English) 421 Foundations of International Management 4 5 This module is based on a board game business simulation. Similar to a pilot who learns flying an aircraft in a flight simulator, teams of students take the responsibility for successfully running a business in a competitive environment. International Management as a subject; analyzing the performance of a business; balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement; managing profitability, productivity and liquidity; organizing the value chain effectively; modern tools for managing the revenue side of a business; modern tools for managing the expense side of a business, value based management. Case Studies and script. 422 Core Competencies of International Management 4 5 This module begins with an overview over most important international management skills. Later on, the emphasis is placed on working on newest case studies which change from semester to semester. Success in business comes from experience and knowledge, from the ability to analyze and reflect, from observing and interacting with others, and learning from these encounters. The case method is based upon the belief that management is a skillful art rather than a collection of techniques or concepts. Training of intercultural communication skills; case studies focussing on key management skills such as: leadership, decision making, problem solving, planning, self management, controlling, emotional intelligence, leadership development, innovation, team management, career planning. Case Studies and script. 1
2 482 Data Modelling and Data Management* 4 5 Understand the importance of information and data management for enterprises, understand the components of an Entity Relationship Model. understand the terms used in conceptual and logical models, state the principles of normalization, develop an Entity Relationship Model, gain the capability to use a state of the art tool for Data Modelling and to develop an initial table design from an entity relationship model, understand the concepts of object relational databases, learn how to use the best known database query language, understand the requirements for and concepts of database architecture, multi user synchronisation, data protection, data security using an example database management system; learn the basic concepts of data distribution, understand the cooperation between database systems and ERP systems, Learn the meaning of the terms Data Warehouse, OLAP, Data Mining and Business Intelligence. 3 724 International Marketing / Marketing Planning 4 5 Participants will learn to analyse and structure real life tasks and to develop targeted solutions. They will develop a better understanding for teamwork and for presenting and discussing their proposals. Furthermore, the course will deal with the importance and special functions of international marketing and thus enable participants to think strategically with regard to international markets and international operations. Marketing planning: introduction to case studies; working in teams; presentation/discussion of possible solutions; team based analysis of case studies; situational analysis; technique of solving problems. International marketing: from simple exporting to transnational marketing; strategic approaches; operative examples; market assessment and choice of market; international market research; strategic options in international marketing; forms of market entry and market penetration; general framework and special conditions concerning the marketing mix (product, price, place and promotion); special features concerning organisation and controlling in international marketing. Lecture scripts, worksheets, and case studies. 728 European Economy Politics** 4 5 The student shall learn to apply his knowledge, acquired in his mandatory economics classes, to current issues of national and international economic policy. Current issues of national, regional and international economic policy, German and International development politics, European politics of monetary and trade integration, international trade and exchange rate policies. **This module will not be offered regularly 3
4 106 Business English Basics (B1 B2) 2 3 This course should help students to extend their existing knowledge of languages at level B1 B2 (Independent User) generally and technically to expend to communicate in the international business world. They acquire basic knowledge in business English and work with them in different exercises. The students have the ability to speak about their apprenticeship and their studies and know basic university vocabulary. They know the vocabulary for describing companies and their structures. They are familiar with the standard expressions of business correspondence and could write short e mails and letters. They also know the common expressions to do business calls. Breaking the ice! communicative activity to encourage the free exchange of personal information. The concept of the "Common European Framework for Languages" and the Dialang placement test. Socialising! greetings, making introductions, building relationships, making contacts in job related situations, small talk, apologizing, etc. Talking about one's field of studies. Companies! structures, hierarchies, departments, types of companies, management levels, positions and responsibilities. Problem solving! working on a case study and presenting results. Grammar review according to students needs with special focus on tenses. Giving presentations in English! preparation, performance, content, visuals, giving feedback. Communication! information overload, making business calls, writing business letters and e mails, reports, memos, checking voic , etc. Practicing listening skills using audio materials. Reading authentic and adapted texts from the business world to develop reading skills and built up a solid stock of key business vocabulary. Role plays to practice learned phrases and vocabulary in everyday business situations. 207 Business English Basics (B2) 2 2 The students enlarge their basic knowledge in business English and could adopt these in discussions and presentations. Their terminology has enlarged with further topics. They are familiar with common business texts. They dispose to do a professional presentation in English. They verify teamwork by acquire and enforcing these presentation in groups. The course continues with a content based approach in which students read and analyze articles from the Financial Times, The Economist, etc. to develop reading skills and build up a stock of key 4
5 vocabulary. Topics covered include change, money and innovation. The career skills dealt with are dealing with figures, describing trends, diagrams and charts, giving presentations in English, preparation, group management, content, performance, visuals, giving feedback, participating in a meeting. Understanding common business abbreviations. Practising listening skill, using audio material from authentic business sources. Grammar review according to students needs with a special focus on simple past vs. present perfect Practising, listening skills using audio materials. Role plays to practise learned phrases and vocabulary in everyday business situations 5
