Curse descriptin The bjective f this curse is t prvide students with an understanding f the rle f infrmatin technlgy in business rganizatins. Students learn hw infrmatin technlgies can be used t create business value, slve business prblems, accmplish crprate gals and achieve and maintain a cmpetitive advantage. Prerequisite: Nne. Expanded Curse Descriptin Infrmatin technlgy dminates the mdern business envirnment. This creates a need fr managers that nt nly understand technlgy but als knw hw t use it t create business value fr the rganizatin. Business Technlgy Management (BTM) is a set f prcesses and services that unite an enterprise's business technlgy (BT) and business management (BM) strategies t extract ttal BT slutin value ptential. The curse intrduces students t infrmatin systems and technlgy with a fcus n its applicatin t help businesses t achieve and maintain a cmpetitive advantage. Mdern infrmatin systems and appraches used t supprt rganizatins in their peratins and interactins with ther business are emphasized in this curse, including enterprise resurce planning (ERP), supply chain management (SCM), Business Intelligence (BI) and custmer relatinship management (CRM). Database management and design is cvered as a tl t imprve decisin making and t supprt peratins. The use f internet technlgy as a business tl t expand markets, imprve efficiency and facilitate peratins is intrduced t students with practical business cases. Students are als expsed t infrmatin technlgy risks such as cmputer crimes and learn hw t mitigate them by using infrmatin security. This curse als prvides students with hands n experience t an ERP system (SAP) and a database system (Micrsft Access). Learning Objectives The main bjective f this curse is t prvide an in depth understanding f the rle f infrmatin systems in supprting business activities and enhancing rganizatins cmpetitive advantage. Nte: Older editins d nt have all the chapters required fr this curse. iclicker Yu are required t purchase an iclicker fr in class participatin. A clicker is a classrm respnse system that allws yu t respnd t questins the prfessr displays during class. Yu will be graded n yur in class clicker participatin (merely answering the questins) and perfrmance (answering the questins crrectly). New and used iclickers are available in the bkstre, which als ffers a buy back ptin. Please read abut the iclicker registratin! Sftware fr assignments Yu will need varius specific sftware applicatins fr yur assignments in this curse, such as SAP GUI and Micrsft Access. When each assignment is annunced, specific instructins will be prvided t btain and install the required sftware. Althugh the SCBTM Department has a cmputer lab (MB ) that has all the required sftware installed, the lab is nt always pen, and s it is best t learn hw t run the required sftware n yur wn cmputer. Imprtant Nte fr Apple Macs users The assignments teach yu hw t use real wrld business sftware. Unfrtunately, much sftware in the business wrld des nt wrk well r at all n Apple OS X. Thus, if yu use a Mac, yu will smetimes need t als run Windws n yur Mac. Instructins will be prvided fr hw t d this. Teaching Methd Practical examples in class and practice prblems are presented in business and ecnmics settings. These examples are drawn frm a variety f areas such as accunting, management, finance, marketing, prductin, ecnmics and business infrmatin systems. The teaching methds include: Lectures with discussin: Imprtant material frm the textbk and ther surces will be cvered. These lecture resurces may include presentatins, slides, websites, and vides. Mini case studies and discussins: Real r fictinal business scenaris may be presented, and there will be in class and nline discussins n hw t apply infrmatin systems t slve business prblems. Clickers and peer instructin: Classrm respnse technlgy t facilitate active in class learning will be used in every class. Further infrmatin n clickers is prvided n the last page f this utline. Assignments and activities: Students will be required t cmplete assignments and activities designed t cmplement and enhance learning f the curse material as well as t prvide sme practical experience f management infrmatin systems. Exam: The final exam will take place n the university premises. The final exam will cver the material in the bk. The date, time and rms fr the final exam will be determined by the examinatin ffice. 5 Class Preparatin and Prblem Assignments Understanding f the curse material is generally achieved thrugh individual (r grup) study, hmewrk assignments, and classrm examples. The instructr will nt explicitly cver in class all material that students are expected t learn. Lectures are used t develp an understanding f the mre cmplex issues. It is yur respnsibility t study the remaining parts f each chapter. Classrm and nline examples are used t illustrate the applicatin f material in typical cntexts. T maximize yur benefit frm this curse, yu shuld thrughly read the chapter material prir t each class and try t slve the prblems and cases that appear in the Class Schedule. Due t the large class size, nt all the questins yu have can be answered in class. Please pst any remaining questins yu might have abut the curse t the discussin frum n the curse website n Mdle. Other students, the teaching assistant r the prfessr will answer yur questins. All handuts will be psted n the curse website n Mdle. It is yur respnsibility t check them and print them befre class. Curse Evaluatin The final grade fr the curse will be based n the fllwing cmpnents: Evaluatin Class activities 15% Assignments 25% Assignment 1: SAP (Individual) 7% Assignment 2: ERD and Databases (Grups f maximum tw students) 11% Assignment 3: E prcurement (Individual) 7% Final examinatin 60% Ttal 100% Details Class activities There will be a variety f in class learning activities, ne f which is clickers use and peer instructin. In any class when yu answer clicker questins, yu will receive a participatin mark fr merely answering the questins and a perfrmance mark fr yur crrect answers. The lwest 2 marks in the semester will be excluded frm the calculatin f the clicker participatin and perfrmance marks. (Nte: details f clicker use are prvided later in this dcument.) Assignments There are three assignments during the semester; please refer t the schedule fr the due dates. Assignments 1 and 3 are individual, Assignment 2 can be dne as an individual r by grups f maximum tw students. Assignments 1 and 2 cmprise tw parts each. Assignment 3 requires that yu register in Week 8. Nte that this assignment begins in week 12, if yu d nt register by week 11, then yu will get zer fr this assignment (registratin after week 9 carries a penalty f 10% per week). 6 Final examinatin The final examinatin is wrth 60% f the ttal mark fr this curse. Hwever, in rder t pass the curse, yu must scre at least 50% in the final examinatin. The final examinatin is cmprehensive; it will cver all f the chapters and sectins f the textbk listed abve. The final examinatin will have bth multiple chice questins and wrd prblems. 8 Clicker FAQ s: Why d we use clickers? research n learning reprts the fllwing: When yu actively participate in learning, yu retain the knwledge lnger than yu wuld if yu passively listened t the lecture. When yu answer questins, yu remember the answers better than if yu were just tld the answers t the questins. Yu will remember the answers even mre when yu discuss it with ther students befre answering. This peer instructin has been fund t imprve in class learning. Hw d we use clickers in class? In each class, typically the fllwing steps are repeated: Prfessr explains a tpic A multiple chice questin is displayed Yu read the questin and answer it using yur clicker What are sme ther benefits f clicker exercise? It prvides immediate feedback t yu abut yur level f knwledge f the tpic f the questin cmpared t the ther students in the class. It prvides feedback t the prfessr by alerting her t tpics that were nt clearly understd by the majrity f the students in the class. The prfessr immediately respnds by prviding further clarificatins. It is an bjective way f giving credit fr yur class preparatin and participatin It is fun! (several students frm varius universities, reprted this I agree as well) What d I need t d t benefit frm this interactive learning activity? Yu will need t prepare fr each class by familiarizing yurself with the tpic befre class. Withut preparatin, this learning activity can easily deterirate int a mindless clicking exercise which defeats its purpse. A mre detailed guideline n preparing fr class is prvided belw. What are frmer students wh have used clickers in anther curse I have taught saying abut it? Belw are sme cmments frm frmer students: i Clickers are a gd way t keep the class interesting and helps us stay up t date. The clicker questins are very effective I clicker is a very gd idea since it frces students t g t class and participate. I find the clicker questins a gd way t get participatin marks. I really liked the clicker questins, and we went ver everything in great detail. I really like the cncept f wrking with clickers because it makes yu think n yur feet and reflect n the material that has just been cvered. I als like the cncept f clickers as it really evaluates students understanding f the theries. She shuld keep using clicker questins t help students understand what they are reading in the textbk Hw d I register my i Clicker? 1. Lg in t the MyCncrdia Prtal at 2. It might be a paper purchased thrugh ne f the many available surces. Plagiarism des nt refer t wrds alne it can als refer t cpying images, graphs, tables, and ideas. Presentatin is nt limited t written wrk. It als includes ral presentatins, cmputer assignments and artistic wrks. Finally, if yu translate the wrk f anther persn int French r English and d nt cite the surce, this is als plagiarism. Clickers: Bringing smene else s clicker t class and answering fr them cnstitutes cheating. It will be dealt with in the same manner as cheating.
