1 Gerunds, Infinitives, and Participles A sorting game to help students identify these troublesome verbals. By East Tennessee Bookworm

2 I created this game to help my 7 th and 8 th graders with verbals. They were having trouble identifying and locating gerunds, infinitives, and participles. There are 12 of each verbal type on the following slides. For differentiation, pages 6 14 have the verbals underlined while pages do not. I use this in a library center with 3-4 students at a time. If color ink is a problem, this game prints well in grayscale. Have the students correctly identify the 12 gerunds, infinitives, and participles. I used this activity as a center in my library class. I placed the 3 definition cards at the center of the table. The students took turns drawing a card from the stack and placing it with it s correct definition card.

3 Teacher directions: Print pages 4 15 and/or on card stock. I laminated mine for durability. Place pages 4 6 on the center of the table and cut apart pages 7 15 (or if you want the more difficult version pages 17 25) into game cards. Place the cards on a stack on the table and have students draw one and place it with the correct verbal definition. Note - You can differentiate by either giving students fewer cards or by printing the cards without the verbals underlined. Student directions: Read the verbal definitions to review each type of verbal you have studied in class. Draw a game card and place it with the correct definition.

4 Infinitive a verbal that is used as a noun and is formed using the word to and the base of a verb.

5 Gerunds a verbal used as a noun is formed by using the present participle ending ing.

6 Participle a verbal used as an adjective. A present participle always ends with ing. A past participle usually ends with ed.

7 Timothy loves to play basketball all day long. When the bell rings, it is time to leave. Confusing directions are hard to follow. When it s time to leave, please lock the back door.

8 It is better to study a little every night than to wait till the day before the big test. The teacher s goal was to walk around the track ten times after school. Eager to get to school, Thomas set his alarm for 6:00 A.M. Mrs. Smith loves to read.

9 During art class Maria loves to paint. The students were asked to create a project about the Great Depression for history class. The principal had to punish the students for fighting. During math class, Jose just wanted to sleep.

10 Susie likes performing in the talent show at school. Wearing tight jeans is not good for your blood s circulation. Singing is Joey s favorite hobby. Scrambling over the rock pile, the students retrieved their baseball.

11 Walking is a great way to exercise. Leanne enjoys typing in the computer lab at school. Will earned a homerun by hitting the baseball over the fence. David avoided completing his homework because he was sick.

12 The principal decided that limiting the freedom of speech was appropriate if the speech was harmful. Running down the hall seems dangerous. The students protested increasing the hours of the school day. Eating ice cream with your fingers could be a messy experience.

13 Playing basketball is a great form of exercise. The broken tree on the playground swayed in the wind. Climbing into the tree, the cat escaped the ferocious dog. Sitting at her desk, the librarian checked out the student s books.

14 Paying for his bubblegum, Jason spent all of his allowance. Springing forth from the ground, water poured from the burst pipe. Talking out of turn, Cheyenne interrupted the group s discussion. Jumping into the back of the truck, the collie went to the store with Farmer Brown.
