I am looking forward to a productive and successful school year. To have such a year, you are expected to be an active participant in class. We will begin the school year with working on grammar, vocabulary, and reading skills. In addition, we will be utilizing REWARDS, that emphasizes multisyllabic word reading strategies. Furthermore, we will use INSIDE, a language, literacy, and content. As well as, Step Up to Writing. Our class will also have a variety of short stories and/or novels based on individual assessments.

3 GRADING SCALE A = % A- = B+ = B = B- = C+ = C = C-= D+= D= F= 59-0 Returned Work: All work will be graded and returned in-class in a timely manner. Please allow a while longer for lengthier writing assignments. Students will have an opportunity to review their graded work, and then they will be asked to file the assignments into their class portfolios. Portfolios are used to gauge student progress throughout the year. Assignments: All assignments must be submitted by the given due date and are due at the beginning of the class period unless otherwise stated. All homework is due the next day unless otherwise stated. Late Assignments/Missed Work: Any assignments not received on or before the due date are considered late. In order to receive credit for any missed assignments, students must have an excusable absence, tardy, or early dismissal. It is the student s responsibility to check with the teacher regarding any late/missed assignments and their due date. CHEATING/PLAGIARISM (Academic Dishonesty) Cheating/plagiarism include, but are not limited to; copying another s work to use as one s own, allowing another to copy one s work, or making an effort to distribute class assignments or test information without teacher permission to another student (written or verbal.) Any attempt by a student to present work of others as his/her own, even if those students were working together in a group or partnership is considered cheating.

5 COMPUTER/PERSONAL DEVICE DISTRICT POLICY The Issaquah School District provides computer technology for the enhancement of learning. BLMS encourages and promotes the use of technology as a tool in academic study, collaboration and innovation. All students will have a network account that provides access to the Internet and mainstream software applications through their classrooms, library or computer labs. All use of the school network and computers must be for educational purposes. Students are required to have on file a signed 6-12 Student Responsible Use Agreement, otherwise known as a Responsible Use Agreement (RUA). This document, signed by both the parents and the student, spells out specific rules and responsibilities for computer and network access at BLMS. We require that students adhere to school, District and State Regulations. Violations will result in progressive discipline up to and including expulsion. A search of student s files may be conducted if there is suspicion that the student has violated the RUA. These rules include, but are not limited to, the following: Students will NOT: Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the network Deliberately disrupt the network Destroy data that is not your own Destroy, modify or abuse the hardware or software Write shell scripts outside of class time Make changes to the desktop or system Use obscene, profane, lewd, vulgar or rude language Use inflammatory, threatening or disrespectful language Use any form of instant messaging or take part in chat rooms Play any games except as part of a directed classroom activity Give out personal information about yourself or others Consume food or drink in any computer lab. The student is responsible for his/her individual account and should take reasonable precautions to prevent others from using his/her account. Under no conditions should students give out their private password to other students. Students will comply with Fair Use and copyright laws, citing all text, graphics or other material copied from other files or from the Internet. Students will not use the network to access material that is profane or obscene or that advocates illegal acts or violence or discrimination towards others. An exception may be made if the purpose is to conduct research assigned by a teacher. Notify your teacher immediately if: You accidentally access an inappropriate site The computer has been altered or is not working properly You see someone violating these rules REMEMBER: THE USE OF TECHOLOGY AT SCHOOL IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT. BLMS IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY PERSONAL ITEMS BROUGHT TO SCHOOL.

6 Class Description: This language arts class is designed to increase your communications skills through reading, writing, speaking, and the study of the English language. Our primary focus in language arts class will be mastery of different writing styles, demonstration of the rules of grammar, and the ability to express yourself orally. This year you can expect to read a variety of fiction and non-fiction including novels, short stories, dramas, poetry, and essays. These writing pieces will model the different writing styles we will be working on ourselves. Writing assignments will include timed responses, journal writing, essays, critiques, and creative pieces. Vocabulary, spelling, and grammar assignments will also be an important part of this class. Because we are a community of learners, please also expect to work periodically in group situations and to present information to your peers in groups or individually. Please understand that at-home reading is expected and is a component of our course. You will be held accountable for at-home reading by various methods. Our major units of study will include but are not limited to: Narrative writing* Expository writing (descriptive, explanation, comparison and contrast, problem/solution)* Technical writing (friendly letters, thank-you notes, instructions, web pages)* Persuasive writing/speech writing and delivery* Poetry Short stories Mythology/Folklore Sentence Fluency and Construction Vocabulary Standard grammar and mechanics *Throughout all of our writing, we will also utilize the multi-step writing process to develop, revise, evaluate, and improve our products. In our course of study in all the units, we will address the various elements of specific genres (including but not limited to organization, purpose, audience, narration, conflict, sound, graphics, tone, and theme).
