3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1
4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? School is located in South Lake County in the town of Minneola. It is comprised of grades Kindergarten through 5th grades. There are approximately 970 students and 110 employees. It is a uniform school and has obtained an A as a school grade since its opening in It has earned the 5-Star School Award for community involvement and the Golden School Award for volunteerism from the state for the past four years. The student population consists of 58% White, 22% Hispanic, 11% African-American and 6% Asian. The staff population consists of 80% White, 14% Hispanic, 5% African-American and 2% Asian. is within one mile of Minneola Elementary Charter School. The schools shared a common zone. In the past three years, the student population at GLE continued to grow above capacity. The district added five portables to the school and then made the decision to rezone. The decision to rezone has decreased the student population from approximately 1030 students to what it is now. Grassy Lake also shared its campus with sand skinks from its opening year. Currently there are areas in front and behind the school that have been fenced for the protection of these skinks. The land is in mitigation and will soon be released back to the school. There are 68 students that qualify as homeless students. Grassy Lake partners with community agencies to provide resources to these families. Page 2
5 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Since opening in August 2007, Grassy Lake has been recognized as an "A" school. The focus has been and will continue to be student achievement with high expectations. We believe every student can and will learn. Whatever the challenge, it will be met head-on because we believe there are no limits to academic excellence. GLES is full of professionals who take great pride in the responsibility set before them. Each staff member is a vital part of our team and so are you. Without everyone, we would never accomplish all that we have since Our students will play a key role in shaping the future and it is our responsibility to give them the tools to help them make a positive impact. We want our students to know there are no limits to what they can accomplish. With all of us working together we can continue to make Grassy Lake "The Place Where Dreams Come Alive". Mission Statement: Through the dedication and commitment of staff, parents, and the community, provides a safe learning environment that challenges students to strive for excellence. School Motto: "If you Dream it, and Believe it, you will Achieve it." School mascot: Stars Grassy lake offers many programs and strategies to students for the purpose of accelerating and remediating students. This year Grassy Lake is fulfilling the criteria to be a STEM school. We provide before and after school tutoring for struggling students in third through fifth grades. We have currently developed and implemented STAR block. The STAR block utilizes an hour each couple of days to group students in grades three through five according to their skill ability. Instruction is provided to fulfill the academic needs of these students. Smiley Math is a math program for grades kindergarten through fifth that provides students with higher order thinking math questions. The students participate in the Superintendent's Reading Challenge as well as take Accelerated Reading tests. The school is on track with Common Core. We are immersed in the Response to Intervention process. These are just a few examples of all the programs we offer our students that embodies our school's purpose. Page 3
6 Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Since opening in August 2007, Grassy Lake has been recognized as an "A" school. We have been awarded the 5-Star School and Golden School Awards for the past four years. Our Rookie Teacher of the Year was nominated as a finalist for the district. The state selected and recognized our senior volunteer for two consecutive years. Our STEM bowl teams have placed within the top five for the past two years. The daily attendance rate conitnues to be at 95%. Grassy Lake is striving to meet the targets for Annual Measurable Objectives. We expect to fulfill the requirements to be considered a STEM school. We are on track to effectively implement Common Core State Standards and anticpate a successful transition. Page 4
