1 Teaching Points: I can define a memoir and identify the characteristics of a memoir. Standards(s): CC P E07.C Materials: Language of Literature, Mandela-from Long Walk to Freedom page 732 Connection: Say, We all have struggles that we face on a daily basis. There are people in society who struggle with large and small issues, from as bullying to race issues. In 1948 the white controlled government of South Africa established apartheid, or racial segregation. The purpose was to main white control. Black South Africans had no political rights. Nelson Mandela was elected president in 1994 after years of struggle and many years of imprisonment for his beliefs. This excerpt we will be reading is from his book, Long Walk to Freedom. This is a MEMOIR. a type of autobiography where the author narrates specific events in his or her own life that relate to the events happening in the world. As you read the passage, notice how Mandela s own story is connected to events in his country. Modeling (I do/we do): Listen/read the excerpt from the text. Pp Independent Practice (You do): With a partner, make a chart that lists the key events in Mandela s life and what he has learned from them. Afterwards, discuss with your partner how these events as well as the insights he gained from them. Sharing/Closure: Gather back and share out the insights that were learned from the readings. Make a master list of Memoir Characteristics about his or her life, significance, what is happening in the world our your world Assessment: Check for Understanding Reflection

Standards(s): CC P E07.C Materials: Class copies of worksheet Setting Class copies of worksheet Prewriting Connection: Say, In this lesson you will learn about setting in literature and writing and will include it in your memoir. Modeling (I do/we do): Say, the word setting means where and when the action of a story, poem, or play occurs. The place may be real or imaginary. The time may be past, present, or future. Setting may include other details too. Draw the chart below on the board. Ask volunteers to identify their present setting (school classroom). Then ask students the questions in the middle column and use their responses to complete the chart for their present setting, a school classroom. SETTING: SCHOOL CLASSROOM Where? When? Is it real or imaginary? Is it a city, town, rural area, or other sort of place? Is it inside or outside? What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? Is it past, present, or future? What are the customs and styles of dress at this time? What season is it? What day of the week is it? What time of day is it? Independent Practice (You do): Check Understanding/Worksheet Complete the setting worksheet for the writing of YOUR memorable event.. Fill in the setting for your memoir/event. Then answer all of the questions that refer to the specific setting of the event you will be writing about. When done, complete the Sentence Frames portion of the worksheet. Sharing/Closure: Ask for a volunteer(s) to define setting and give two examples. On the Prewriting worksheet, fill in the setting and event that you will be writing about in your memoir. As you complete the other elements

3 (sensory details and significance, continue to refer back to the Prewriting worksheet for reference. This graphic organizer will be essential to the writing of the essay. Assessment: Check for Understanding Collect or conference with each student to ensure accuracy and understanding. Reflection:
