6 Online General Directions for the Online Practice Tests Online Schools are required to administer the online practice tests to all students before administering the online assessments. Be sure to allow students with testing accommodations ample time to practice with the appropriate accommodations, such as Text-to-Speech, before administering the online assessments. Pearson will create practice test sessions to provide students with the opportunity to take the online practice tests. It is especially important to provide students practice signing in, reviewing, and submitting online practice test sections because students may only sign in and submit their answers once for each section. Practice tests are set up and administered in the PearsonAccess next Training site. Pearson loads sample students and generates test sessions for practice tests in the training center. The number of sample students approximates the number of students submitted on a corporation s IDOE-TL. The sessions are created using the IDOE Session Name that was submitted on the IDOE-TL. If needed, Test Coordinators may go to pearsonaccessnext.com/customer/index.action to create additional sample students and test sessions that will be used to administer the ISTEP+ practice tests. Live student data is not entered into the training site, as this is a non-production site. Prior to testing, Examiners print the practice student testing tickets and distribute them to students taking the practice tests. The testing tickets contain Username and Password TestNav access information. Before administering the online practice tests and the online assessments, refer to the Indiana Online Testing Guide and the PearsonAccess next Online User Guide for information regarding the responsibilities of the Test Examiner and the setup and administration of the online tests. The Indiana Online Testing Guide is posted at and the PearsonAccess next Online User Guide is posted at Special Accommodations For students requiring testing accommodations, such as Text-to-Speech, computergenerated responses, use of a read aloud script, scribe, Large Print, and Braille, the appropriate settings must be selected in the Accommodations section of the Manage Student Tests task in PearsonAccess next. The student s up-to-date accommodations plan must be consulted so that the testing accommodations can be set up in accordance with the student s Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or ILP (EL Plan). 2 PRACTICE TEST MANUAL FOR ISTEP+ PART 1 AND PART 2 ASSESSMENT: GRADE 10

7 For the ISTEP Winter Retest, students with a calculator accommodation must be assigned the calculator in the Accommodations section of the Manage Student Test task in PearsonAccess next. Then the form group must be changed to Calculator on the Create/Edit Sessions task. Refer to the ISTEP Winter Retest Grade 10 Test Administration Manual for additional instructions on how to assign the calculator accommodation for the operational Winter Retest. Refer to the Spring 2018 Examiner s Manuals for instructions on how to assign the calculator accommodation for the ISTEP Spring administration. Students with visual impairments will use pinch/zoom with ipad and other touch screen devices and browser zoom (Ctrl +/-) with desktop devices for enlarging the text and images. Students can practice using these tools during the practice tests. Online Using the Text-to-Speech Online Accommodation For students who require a Text-to-Speech Accommodation, students will use the Text-to- Speech tool, which reads aloud text on the screen. Text-to-Speech must be set up in a student s profile prior to administering the online tests. This will allow students time to practice with the tool before actual testing. If a Text-to-Speech Accommodation was included in the TL submission, the student s profile will already be set up. If the Text-to-Speech Accommodation was not included or if you are adding a student manually, you need to select the Text To Speech checkbox under Accommodations on the Manage Student Tests screen in PearsonAccess next. Ensure the volume has been adjusted to a moderate level before students sign in to the test. Ensure any device used for Text-to-Speech is equipped with a sound card. Prior to administering the practice test, ensure that the student has the necessary hardware, such as earphones and a sound card, and that the volume on the student s workstation or device is not muted. The restrictions on which parts of the tests can be read aloud and which cannot are built into the tests. To hear the text read aloud, the student can select the play or megaphone icon. Allow students with this accommodation to practice with the Text-to-Speech tool as long as necessary to become comfortable using the tool. Practice can be done using the appropriate practice tests in the Training site. NOTE: See Appendix A of this manual for the practice test script for Text-to-Speech Accommodation for ISTEP+ Online. 13 The user menu is in the far right corner of your screen and looks like the outline of a person and a drop-down arrow. When you select the drop-down arrow, you will see the option Sign out of TestNav. Do not select Sign out of TestNav at this time. You should choose this option only if you are directed to exit the test or after you have submitted your answers. In the user menu, you will see two other options. The first is the Change the background and foreground color option. Select this now. The drop-down menu shows a variety of screen color options. These options should only be used if they make it easier to read your screen. (Pause.) Now select the user menu again and choose the option Show Line Reader Mask. A gray bar with a window in it appears on your screen, allowing you to focus on reading one line at a time. Drag the tool over the question so that one line is displayed in the window. You can continue to move the reader down as you read the question. If you do not find the Line Reader helpful, you do not need to use it. To remove the Line Reader, go back to the user menu and select, Hide Line Reader Mask. Part 1 Online Mathematics Section 1 On the right side of your screen is the Exhibits option. Select this option and a Mathematics Reference Sheet will appear on your screen. The reference sheet provides you with formulas that may be helpful in solving some of the problems. To close the reference sheet, select the X in the upper right corner. If you would like to highlight parts of a question, you can use the Text Highlighter. First select the text that you want to highlight. The Text Highlighter will appear. It shows two color options for highlighting and a white box with a red line that erases what you have highlighted. Now practice using the Highlighter. (Pause.) Does anyone have any questions about the tools? Pause to allow the students to practice with the tools and to answer any questions the students may have. PRACTICE TEST MANUAL FOR ISTEP+ PART 1 AND PART 2 ASSESSMENT: GRADE 10 9

14 Part 1 Online Mathematics Section 1 Now look at the top of the screen and you will see the question about a dropping rock. Read the question and what Part A is asking you to solve. In order to read all of the question, you may need to scroll to move down through the question. Pause as the students read Part A of the question. Below the question in Part A you will see a box. You will solve the problem and show your work in this box, using the math symbols on the right to help you show your work. Take some time now find the number keys on your keyboard and review the math symbols in the equation builder in the box to the right. (Pause.) You will notice three options above the Show All Work box. The first arrow that curves to the left will undo what you have just typed in the box. The second arrow that curves to the right will redo or retype work you may have erased. The garbage can will delete all of the work and allow you to start over. Take a few minutes to practice with these tools and show your work as you solve Part A. Pause to allow students to solve Part A and type their work into the Show All Work box. When you have finished solving the problem and showing your work in the box, type your final answer to Part A in the Answer box shown below the Show All Work box. Pause to allow students to enter their final answer in the Part A answer box. When you have finished Part A of this question, scroll down to find Part B. Carefully read that problem, enter your work in the Show All Work box, and enter your final answer in the answer box. Then go on to Part C and do the same. Take a few minutes now to complete Parts B and C of Question 1. Pause to allow students to complete parts B and C. Are there any questions? Pause to answer any questions the students may have. Offer any explanations necessary to clarify the questions for the students. 10 PRACTICE TEST MANUAL FOR ISTEP+ PART 1 AND PART 2 ASSESSMENT: GRADE 10

15 If time allows, you may read the following possible responses. For Question 1, Part A, the correct answer is that the rock is not dropping at a constant speed. If the rock were dropping at a constant speed, it would drop the same distance every second and the graph would show a straight line. The graph does not show a straight line, which means that the distance the rock drops every second is changing. This means that the rock is not dropping at a constant speed. For Question 1, Part B, the correct answer is that the point (3, 0) indicates that when x = 3 seconds, the height of the rock is y = 0 meters, which means that the rock hits the ground and comes to a rest. For Question 1, Part C, the correct answer is that when x = 0 the y-coordinate represents the height of the building. Point (0, 44) indicates that when x = 0 seconds, the rock has a height of y = 44 meters. Because the rock is dropped from the top of the building, this means that the height of the building is 44 meters. Part 1 Online Mathematics Section 1 When you have finished answering Parts A, B, and C of the Mathematics practice question and are ready to submit your answers, select the Next arrow to go to the next screen. Pause to make sure the students have selected the Next arrow and are now at the End of Section 1: Mathematics screen, shown below. 91 Specific Directions for the Part 1 Paper-and-Pencil Section 1: Mathematics If English/Language Arts practice tests were completed first, distribute the books to the correct students according to their names on the front cover. This test section may ONLY be read aloud to students if they have an IEP, a Section 504 Plan, or an ILP (EL Plan) that allows for such accommodation. Note to the Examiner: Read aloud ONLY the directions printed in the boxes. Additional information has been provided underneath the boxes. Part 1 Paper/Pencil Mathematics Section 1 After the students have arrived, each student should receive: A practice test book A Grade 10 Mathematics Reference Sheet A punchout ruler A number two pencil and scratch paper Today you are going to take the ISTEP+ Grade 10 Mathematics Practice Test. You should have a practice test book, a punchout ruler, a copy of the Grade 10 Mathematics Reference Sheet, and a calculator. Look at the front cover of your practice test book. Make sure it has your name on it, or if this is your first day of the practice tests, write your name on the Student Name line provided. Please do not open your practice test book until I tell you to do so. Make sure you are using a No. 2 pencil with an eraser when taking this test. Pens are not allowed. You may use your punchout ruler to help you make measurements or draw a straight line while you work on the practice test. You may use your Mathematics Reference Sheet and calculator to help you solve some of the problems in the practice test. You may also have scratch paper to use during the test, if using it will help you. If you need a ruler, a reference sheet, a calculator, and/or scratch paper; please raise your hand and I will assist you. REMEMBER, IN THE ISTEP+ ASSESSMENT, ANY WORK YOU DO ON SCRATCH PAPER WILL NOT BE SCORED, SO YOU MUST MAKE SURE TO WRITE THE WORK YOU WANT SCORED IN YOUR ASSESSMENT BOOK. PRACTICE TEST MANUAL FOR ISTEP+ PART 1 AND PART 2 ASSESSMENT: GRADE 10 87

92 Part 1 Paper/Pencil Mathematics Section 1 Pause. Give punchout rulers, Mathematics Reference Sheets, calculators, and scratch paper as needed to students who raise their hands. It is important to know that you must write your answers and show your work in the spaces provided. You should read the directions very carefully and do your best to answer clearly and completely. You may write on the figures or diagrams to help you find your answers. Also, to receive full credit, be sure that you complete the charts whenever you are asked to do so. Please try to solve every problem. Do not spend too much time on any one problem. When you write an explanation, you may not need to fill ALL the lines. Your score will depend on how well you have answered the question, not on how long your answer is. Please write, print, and draw neatly. Are there any questions? Pause to answer any questions the students may have. Now you are going to take Section 1 of the practice test, Mathematics. Open your practice test book to Section 1: Mathematics, which is on page 3, and follow along as I read some important reminders you should think about as you practice. They will help you to do your best. (Pause.) You may use a calculator to solve any of the problems in this test. NOTE: A correct answer CANNOT receive full credit if no work is shown. Since you may receive partial credit for all problems in this test, it is important to show ALL work in the spaces provided in this book. When you see the words Show All Work, be sure to show all the steps needed to solve the problem, make your handwriting clear and easy to read, and write the answer on the answer line. As you complete each problem, remember to READ the problem carefully, PLAN how to solve the problem, SOLVE the problem showing all steps, and CHECK your work. Now turn the page and solve Parts A, B, and C of Question 1. Make sure that you write your response only in the spaces provided in your test book. When you see the STOP sign, stop and wait for the next set of instructions. You may begin. Pause to allow the students to do Question 1. Do not read the questions aloud. When students have completed all parts of Question 1, continue. Are there any questions? 88 PRACTICE TEST MANUAL FOR ISTEP+ PART 1 AND PART 2 ASSESSMENT: GRADE 10

93 Pause to answer any questions the students may have. Offer any explanations necessary to clarify the questions for the students. If time allows, you may read the following possible responses. For Question 1, Part B, the correct answer is that the point (3, 0) indicates that when x = 3 seconds, the height of the rock is y = 0 meters, which means that the rock hits the ground. Part 1 Paper/Pencil Mathematics Section 1 Question 1 is the last question in the Section 1: Mathematics Practice Test. Close your practice test book and place the Mathematics Reference Sheet, calculator, ruler, and scratch paper next to your practice test book. You have finished the Mathematics practice test. Pause to answer any questions the students may have. Offer any explanations necessary to clarify the questions for the students. If time allows, you may read the following possible response. For Question 1, an example that may be used is: The author uses the word smart to refer to materials that undergo changes in response to different conditions. Smart is used to refer to the practical applications of these materials and how they help people. For example, piezoelectric materials are smart because they can serve as sensors to warn us of an earthquake. Shape memory alloys are smart because they can remember their shape in response to changes in temperature. Other text-based, relevant details may also be used. In this section, you will reread the passage from Section 1 and then respond to the writing prompt based on the passage. You may look at the passage as often as you like. Your writing will not be scored on your personal opinions or choices but will be scored objectively on how clearly you address the prompt; how well you organize your ideas; how effectively you express yourself; and how consistently you use correct paragraphing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Be sure to use the rules of Standard English. Standard English is the English commonly used in formal writing. It does not include slang or jargon. NOTE: Only your writing on the lined pages in this book will be scored. In this Part 1 Practice Test, you will read only one passage. In the ISTEP+ English/Language Arts Part 1 Test, different passages will be used for each section. Are there any questions?
