1 Relationship Building Activities Tell Me Lies - partners (5 minutes) Here's the way it works: you give three statements about yourself-- two of them are lies and one of them is true. Your partner has to guess the true statement. Keep switching until the time is up and see who wins! PEOPLE Poems Have each child use the letters in his or her name to create an acrostic poem. For example, Bill could write Big Intelligent Laughing Loving. Tell students they must include words that tell something about themselves -- for example, something they like to do or a personality or physical trait. Invite students to share their poems with the class. This activity is a fun one that enables you to learn how your students view themselves. Allow older students to use a dictionary or thesaurus. You might also vary the number of words for each letter, according to the students' grade levels. ( Getting to Know You Form (pg. 2) This form is a quick and easy way to get to know basic facts about your student. Please print out the form below (on page 2) and bring to tutoring if you would like to do this activity. Student-Tutor Respect Agreement (pg. 3) Please bring this on the first day to review expectations with your student, the form is below on page 3. Venn Diagram with school subjects (pg 4-8): I like(d) school because I don t (didn t) like school because My favorite thing to learn in school is (was) This year, I d like to learn This year s GOALS Discuss with your student his/her goals for this school year. They can be academic goals (e.g. I will learn to count to 100) or behavioral ( I will not make fun of another student ) goals, the tutor-student goal sheet will be in your student s folder.
2 NEW PAIRS: GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER BEFORE YOU BEGIN YOUR WORK! Some suggested information to share with each other: My name is. I am years old. My birthday is on. My favorite color is. My favorite food is. I have brothers and sisters. Three things I am really good at are: My favorite thing to do in school is. My favorite thing to do when I have free time is. If I could be an animal, I think I would be a, because. I think I would like to be a when I grow up because. One person I really admire is, because. The best book I ever read was a story about a. **NOTE: if you cannot answer this last question, then make it a goal to be able to answer it eventually!!!
3 Student RESPECT Agreement When I am with Horton s Kids, I will show RESPECT for others and for myself by: Keeping my hands to myself. Always saying thank you to my bus driver, to my tutor, to the people passing out food, and to anyone doing nice things for me. Sitting quietly on the bus. Walking quietly in and out of the buildings for tutoring. Staying with my tutor or my group during tutoring or Sundays. Cleaning up after myself. Doing what an adult asks me to do the first time they ask it, without argument. Reporting any problems to an adult, instead of trying to deal with it myself. Attend all the programs I am enrolled in whenever they are scheduled. Giving 100% effort with a positive attitude every night of tutoring and every Sunday activity!!!! I understand that coming with Horton s Kids is a privilege, and if I do not show respect I will be told to stay home so that other kids can have a chance to come in my place. Tutor RESPECT Agreement When I am with Horton s Kids, I will show RESPECT for others and for myself by: Attending every scheduled session I can, or working with a partner to ensure there is always a caring adult to work with my student. Notifying my student and staff if I have to miss a session. Attending Horton s Kids trainings to be the best possible tutor I can. Recognizing the potential of my student by expecting him or her to give 100% effort with a positive attitude every tutoring session. Coming to tutoring with a positive attitude and giving 100% effort to help my student learn. Walking my student safely and quietly in and out of the buildings for tutoring. Setting positive goals for my student and helping him or her to achieve them. Signed, (Student) (Tutor)
