3 Overview of the workshop Introduction This two-day workshop addresses the usage and role of linked data in the context of architecture, engineering and construction. This workshop will focus specifically on the issue of interoperability, which is typically encountered when information from multiple domains is merged. The encountered issues are listed and discussed, and suggestions are made on how to address these issues. Key topics - IFC to RDF - RDF adapters - interoperability and information exchange - multi-domain data - reasoning - ontology matching - semantic enrichment - linked (open) construction data - open product/building modeling - distributed information management Program The first day, every research team presents their research, related to the topics outlined above. This is organized in two sessions of three hours each. Every research team has a time slot of 45 minutes plus half an hour of discussion. At the end of the day, distinct research topics of interest are filtered out, which will guide discussion on the second day. The idea is to work towards a position paper that documents these topics in a comprehensible way. In the afternoon session, conclusions are made in the form of a position paper and an initial outline of a collaborative project proposal.

IFC-to-RDF: adaptation, aggregation and enrichment Pieter Pauwels, Davy Van Deursen Presentation of the IFC-to-RDF service with implementation details. An indication is given of how IFC/RDF graphs can be further enriched with other data. The resulting network of linked construction data is specifically evaluated in terms of data interoperability. Two approaches are illustrated in which semantic web technologies are used to further enhance interoperability: (1) using explicit rules to describe the translation between diverse schemas able to describe the same kind of information and (2) the role of abductive reasoning in the interpretation of information in diverse schemas. 2. Open Product Modelling Gonçal Costa, Leandro Madrazo Conceptual overview of how semantic web technologies can be deployed as the basis of an open product modeling platform. Benefits and barriers are discussed, with a focus on interoperability issues. Two approaches are illustrated to further enhance interoperability: (1) a meta-ontology approach, in which an ontology is used to manage ontologies, and (2) an instancematching approach that links, for example the Oikodomos case repository with Geodata instances. 3. Model View Definitions in Tekla Software Leif Granholm, Ragnar Wessman, Jukka Suomi Presentation of how information in diverse applications is combined by Tekla software. A specific overview is given of how Model View Definitions (MVDs) are used for this purpose, and diverse advantages and disadvantages are outlined. Session 2-28/03

Building and using multi-domain data James O Donnell, Edward Corry, Edward Curry, Marcus Keane Conceptual overview of how multiple domains and their data silo s can be combined in order to improve information management and collaboration in design and construction projects using the linked data concept. The various silo s that can be considered in an AEC project are: the architecture silo, the BIM/IFC silo, the energy silo, the facility management silo, and so forth. An indication is given of how building information of various sources can be RDFized and combined into one usable Linked Construction Data cloud. Between the diverse silos, an agreement is made that provides a common layer of understanding for data exchange. This agreement can be obtained by automatic ontology matching techniques (standard), or by simple discussion between partners around the table (tailored/custom). 2. Distributed building information management Seppo Törmä, Oraskari Jyrki, Nam Vu Hoang Implementation approaches for IFC -> RDF -> IFC conversion tools and their usage for merging multiple models from diverse sources. Presentation focusing on requirements and encountered issues for converting data from diverse BIM authoring tools and BIM viewers into RDF graphs. Session 3-29/03 Possible key topics: 1. RDFizing and integrating available data 2. Manual approaches in finding agreements between models 3. Automatic approaches in finding agreements between models Session 4-29/03 1. Topics for position paper(s): There is an interest of composing a collaborative project proposal. To get this proposal started, a position paper is composed that outlines the main ideas and the possibilities for future projects. This paper will be shared via GoogleDocs. Targeted journals are Automation in Construction, Journal of Information Technology in Construction, Advanced Engineering Informatics,? 2. Collaborative European projects? Discussion of opportunities, starting from the position paper as our guideline. Concrete calls for project proposals or project ideas obviously improve this session.
