Prerequisites: Keyboarding skills of 30 words a minute and 6 hours from English 131, 132, 133 or

References to text by page number will be provided. The book includes review cards and a code for access to a web site with some electronic materials. This was a new textbook in Spring Other textbooks by these authors will not have the same arrangement and will cause confusion for students. USB Flash drive, 64 meg or higher. To use for storage of documents and when working with teams. Software to Be Used in the Course For this course all documents and assignments will be completed using Microsoft Word. Assignments submitted in Microsoft Works, WordPerfect, or as pdf or graphics files will not be accepted your score on those assignments will be zero. In addition, there will be several assignments using Microsoft Powerpoint. You will also need software to read Powerpoint slides if you do not have the software. If you do not have Microsoft Word or Microsoft Powerpoint on your computer, you should plan to use the software in an on-campus computer lab or some other location where you have access to such software. You will need to download Acrobat Reader to review some graded assignments. If you prefer to purchase software for your computer instead, contact the bookstore. If you have any difficulties, click on the icon I Need Techno Help for assistance. FINAL EXAM Final exam is scheduled for TUESDAY, May 11, from 10:30a.m. -12:30 p.m. Be sure to make the appropriate plans to participate. Course Objectives: 1. Apply business communication strategies and principles to prepare effective communication for domestic and international business situations. 2. Identify ethical, legal, cultural, and global issues affecting business communication. 3. Utilize analytical and problem solving skills typical in business communication. 4. Select appropriate organizational formats and channels used in developing and presenting business messages. 5. Create and revise accurate business documents using computer technology. 6. Communicate electronically (i.e., , chat, messenger, discussion boards, other). 7. Deliver an effective oral business presentation. 8. Access and utilize business information obtained from electronic and/or printed sources. Course Methods: The following methods may be used in the course: lecture presentations, face-to-face meetings, chats, discussions, journals, online assignments, online exams, online quizzes, creating and editing documents, team report, team oral presentation, and electronic mail. Students will use 2

3 Blackboard to check progress in course grades as well as for other course aspects. Class Procedures Teams. Teams will be used in this course. Most teams will have three or four members depending on the class enrollment. Your involvement in the team is important. There will be TWO team projects. The first project will be the team oral presentation. The second project will be the team written research report. Both projects will require research and team cooperation. Participation in a team is not an option, it is a requirement. The official channel of communication for your team will be the team discussion board on Blackboard. Use this approach to send attachments and communicate with each other. You should not make your team chase you around. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep in touch with your team about your activities. A team member who is not performing effectively in the team may be FIRED from the team. The team member may be fired by the team or by the instructor. The primary causes for firing include invisibility (no one has seen or heard from the person) or nonperformance (person does not do his/her work in a timely manner). The discussion board will be examined to see what contributions the team member has made to the team. To institute the firing, the team should write a memo to the instructor with a copy to the team member. The instructor will make the final decision. A fired team member is required to complete all team assignments alone in order to pass the course and will not earn any team points. A fired team member will not earn a higher score than the team on the project. For example, if the team earned a C on the written report, the highest grade the fired individual could earn would be a C. Your goal is to work with your team so that you are not fired. At the conclusion of the team activities, each team member will complete a team evaluation to assess his or her performance as well as that of the fellow team members. An underperforming team member (based on the team evaluation and discussion postings) may receive a lower grade on the team projects than the other members of the team. In severe situations, the team member may be asked to redo the work on an individual basis. Oral Presentation The oral presentations will be presented by teams on Tuesday, February 23, and Thursday, February 25, Class Attendance/Participation. The instructor will be taking attendance and/or will be giving quizzes for attendance points. For each time that you are present when role is called or present when a quiz for attendance is given, you will earn 5 points. The total points in this category is 50 points. These quizzes cannot be made up unless you are absent because of official school business, death in the family, or serious illness. If you feel you qualify for one of those reasons, me (through Blackboard) within a week of the missed date. Deadlines - If you miss the deadline for an uploaded assignment, points will be deducted. You must upload the assignment to Blackboard. You may not send the assignment as an attachment. Some assignments will be uploaded while others will be turned in at class time as 3

4 hard copy assignments. Be sure to pay attention so you follow the correct format. Professional courtesy. This class will be conducted in a professional manner. This means 1) submit work on TIME no excuses, 2) avoid profanity and/or offensive language in your communication, and 3) participate fully and courteously with your team members. In class turn audible signals off cell phones, beepers, and other electronic apparatus. In reference to courtesy to team members, do not send harassing s, texts, or messages using offensive language to team members. Such s may result in a reduction to the sender s grade. Avoid making phone calls, texting, checking your , or playing with your phone in class. Joke assignments, using inappropriate or questionable content for oral presentations or written assignments may result in NO CREDIT or reduced credit for that assignment. If you have questions about what might be professional conduct, please contact me BEFORE you choose your approach to class assignments. Passing Grade. In order to receive a passing grade, the student MUST complete a written formal report and must make the oral presentation as well as earning sufficient points to pass the course. 7 /222 Rusche College of Business Syllabus Addendum Program Learning Outcomes: Program learning outcomes define the knowledge, skills, and abilities students are expected to demonstrate upon completion of an academic program. These learning outcomes are regularly assessed to determine student learning and to evaluate overall program effectiveness. Austin State University. You may also access these policies at Academic Integrity (A-9.1) Academic integrity is a responsibility of all university faculty and students. Faculty members promote academic integrity in multiple ways including instruction on the components of academic honesty, as well as abiding by university policy on penalties for cheating and plagiarism. Definition of Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes both cheating and plagiarism. Cheating includes but is not limited to (1) using or attempting to use unauthorized materials to aid in achieving a better grade on a component of a class; (2) the falsification or invention of any information, including citations, on an assigned exercise; and/or (3) helping or attempting to help another in an act of cheating or plagiarism. Plagiarism is presenting the words or ideas of another person as if they were your own. Examples of plagiarism are (1) submitting an assignment as if it were one's own work when, in fact, it is at least partly the work of another; (2) submitting a work that has been purchased or otherwise obtained from an Internet source or another source; and (3) incorporating the words or ideas of an author into one's paper without giving the author due credit. Please read the complete policy at Withheld Grades Semester Grades Policy (A-54) Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record and with the approval of the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point average. Students with Disabilities To obtain disability related accommodations, alternate formats and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS), Human Services Building, and Room 325, / (TDD) as early as possible in the semester. Once verified, ODS will notify the course instructor and outline the accommodation and/or auxiliary aids to be provided. Failure to request services in a timely manner may delay your accommodations.
