1 HCM305: Health and Disease Credit Hours: 3 Contact Hours: This is a 3-credit course, offered in accelerated format. This means that 16 weeks of material is covered in 8 weeks. The exact number of hours per week that you can expect to spend on each course will vary based upon the weekly coursework, as well as your study style and preferences. You should plan to spend hours per week in each course reading material, interacting on the discussion boards, writing papers, completing projects, and doing research. Course Description and Outcomes This course introduces the basic principles of illness and disease as well as the impact of disease trends on the delivery of services. The clinical manifestations of diseases commonly seen in the health care environment, health promotion, and wellness programs will be reviewed. The key purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the basic principles of illness and disease, as well as the impact of disease trends on the delivery of services. The clinical manifestations of diseases commonly seen in the health care environment, health promotion, and wellness programs will be also reviewed. Additionally the course provides coverage of the decision-making and ethics involved with disease management and familiarizes the students with the basic components of creating a managed care plan. Course Learning Outcomes: 1. Recognize and identify major biological systems in human anatomy. 2. Research the sources of human diseases and articulate causes of the spread of disease within communities. 3. Research and analyze knowledge about communicable disease. 4. Review the theory and application of epidemiology and its role in health care administration. 5. Please provide at least one source per case study to support your responses. Mr. MacPherson came into the emergency department with burns on both of his arms and hands and on his face as the result of a grease fire in his kitchen. He complained of severe pain. His burns showed signs of blistering, swelling and fluid loss. What percentage of his body was burned? What classification is his burn, and why? 2. Margie, who plays center on the women s varsity basketball team, ended up at the bottom of a pile-up during a game. When she arrives at the doctor s office, she complains that her knee is very sore. She mentions that she felt a pop at the time of the injury, and the knee buckles under her weight. What should the physician check, and why? 3. Susan, age 39, is a secretary. She spends most of her working day at a desk. Recently she has complained of feeling tired even though she gets 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. Her doctor has recommended a walking program to counteract her sedentary lifestyle. She is reluctant to begin. What could you tell Susan about the benefits of regular exercise? What muscular problems are likely to result if she does not begin exercise? PORTFOLIO PROJECT: Project Topic and Robust Bibliography (0 points) The assignment for Week 2 is the selection of a topic and the creation of a robust bibliography. Please choose a disease that is present in the North American medical system. It does not have to be a common disease. Please find at least 10 references that discuss the causes, symptoms and current mode of treatment for your chosen disease. These references need to be recent (after 2010) and from a peer-review journal or an organization associated with healthcare (AMA, FSA, CDC, USAMRIID, local/state/regional public health offices, etc.). Please take the time to annotate your bibliography by giving a brief explanation of why you chose each of the 10 or more references. Post your topic and bibliography in the Portfolio Project Discussion Forum. The same topic may not be chosen by more than one student. The first student to post his or her topic and bibliography will claim the topic, so post early if you think you may have competition. Though you will not receive points for this submission, failing to submit this deliverable in Week 2 will result in a loss of points on the final project grade. Explain the mechanics of Mr. Collins s physiological reaction to the stressful experience of an automobile accident and describe the division of the autonomic nervous system that is responsible for Mr. Collins s symptoms. 3. Mrs. Armstrong has a 6-year-old son who was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She says that he stays inside a lot lately and that she is afraid to let him play outside because he might have a hypoglycemic reaction. What can you tell her about the importance of exercise for diabetic patients? PORTFOLIO PROJECT: Portfolio Prospectus Planning Worksheet (0 points) In Week 4 you will need to complete the Portfolio Prospectus Worksheet and upload it to the Week 4 Assignment dropbox. Your responses will help you to synthesize your final prospectus and prepare you to complete your rough draft for Week 7. Though you will not receive points for this submission this week, you will lose points on your final project if you fail to submit your worksheet in Week 4. Many people today are going on variations of the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Describe what happens in the body when only proteins and fat are ingested but carbohydrates are excluded. A patient has recently been diagnosed as positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The patient is unsure whether the medication regimen prescribed is actually helping. The patient complains of several side-effects and is especially upset because he or she was asymptomatic before beginning treatment. How would you respond? What information about the progression of HIV/AIDS could you provide that will aid in the patient in sticking to the treatment regimen? 3. A mother comes to your office and complains that her daughter s school is pushing HPV vaccination. She explains that her daughter is only 11-years old and is not sexually active. She asks for your advice. How do you respond? What would you tell her about the HPV vaccine? What would you tell her about HPV? PORTFOLIO PROJECT: Rough Draft of Project Prospectus (0 points) The assignment for Week 7 is the completion of a rough draft of your prospectus that should be composed of a written paper of at least 5-10 pages (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12-point font). It should include visual aids (images, charts, tables, data, flow-charts) of your own design or with proper, in-text citation. The paper itself should be composed of the following sections: 1. A review of the disease with history, cause and current number of cases in North America. 2. An explanation of the current standard of care and treatment. 3. A cost-benefit analysis of various available care options. See Module 8 for more details about this analysis. 4. A novel care plan that implements modern prevention, treatment, medication, and/or technology. This section should be the largest with the most detail (at least 3-8 pages). 5. A robust bibliography filled with recent resources from peer-reviewed journals or professional health/medical Institutions. Be sure to use APA style with proper in-text citations. Please upload this on the Week 7 Assignment page. It may be best to convert these files to PDF before turning them in, in order to make sure that any formatting or images are maintained. Though you will not receive points this week for your submission, you will lose points on your final project if you fail to submit your rough draft in Week 7. PORTFOLIO PROJECT: Managed Care Plan (350 points) The Portfolio Project is an 8-week assignment that will involve the research of a specific disease and the design of a managed care plan for that condition. This project will include a literature research of the disease and the current standard of care; the creation of a cost-benefit analysis of various care options; the design of a novel care plan that implements modern prevention, treatment, medication, and/or technology; and the dissemination of that plan via a written prospectus and an informational brochure for a healthcare facility. In addition to these final deliverables, you will also be responsible for creating a detailed bibliography and a project planning worksheet and for turning in a rough draft of your prospectus in Week 7. The assignment for Module 8 is based on the completion of all final drafts of these deliverables. Please make corrections and changes based on instructor comments. At the end of Week 8, you will need to turn in the following: 1. Your completed 6-10 page novel care plan prospectus, including: a review of the disease with a robust bibliography; the current standard of care; a cost-benefit analysis of various care options; and a novel care plan that implements modern prevention, treatment, medication, and/or technology. 2. A 1-2 page informational brochure for healthcare employees that reviews the disease and your novel care plan including a checklist for that plan. The design and format of the brochure is up to you, but you must be able to append your completed brochure to your prospectus for uploading. Please submit all required items within a single document to be uploaded on the Week 8 Assignment page. It may be best to convert your completed file to PDF before turning it in, this will make sure that any formatting or images are maintained.
