2 APAM Public Program From February 2018 Brisbane Powerhouse will present a Public Program of works selected from the Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) Program to engage audiences in international and Australian contemporary performing arts. Through public engagement initiatives and free performances this Public Program will provide audiences with the opportunity to experience works and collaborations brought to Brisbane by APAM. Kelly presents [MIS]CONCEIVE What does an Aboriginal Australian person look like? Combining Aboriginal cultural knowledge with contemporary gestural motifs, [MIS]CONCEIVE s fusion of hip-hop, physical percussion and rhythmic cultural pattern is expressive and immediate. Through the mash-up of traditional and contemporary styles that simultaneously reject, reveal and re-educate modern (mis)understandings of Indigenity, [MIS]CONCEIVE argues that knowledge does not equal comprehension. Books are not their covers. One size does not fit all. A high-energy work that pulses with humour, play and personal stories, [MIS]CONCEIVE brings audiences through the past, to understand the present and move forward into a better future. 4 ABOUT Thomas E.S. Kelly is a proud Bundjalung and Wiradjuri man of Queensland and New South Wales. He works with multiple art forms including choreography, dance, theatre, music composition, puppetry and teaching. His performance credits include Long Grass (Vicki Van Hout), Am I (Shaun Parker & Company), Dinosaur Zoo (ERTH Visual & Physical Inc) and 1770: A Tale Not Often Told (Founding Modern Australia). Thomas creates work that offers audiences an opportunity to learn about Aboriginal Australia and where that fits into to the modern world, acknowledging the past, to understand the present. THINGS TO CONSIDER GROUP ACTIVITY EXAMPLE 1 Classroom activity pre-show Materials required: Books like The Rainbow Serpent and Stradbroke Dreamtime or films like Rabbit Proof Fence, Bran Nue Dae and The Sapphires. The purpose of this activity is to investigate how we interpret meaning. After watching or reading the chosen story, discuss how students interpreted different elements and how these same elements will help them interpret [MIS]CONCEIVE. E.g. sound, words, lighting, movement. GROUP ACTIVITY EXAMPLE 2 Classroom activity pre-show Materials required: Library or access to a computer and the internet. Individually research the important role that performance has played in Indigenous culture in both the past and present. Discuss as a class the different types of performance used by Indigenous peoples i.e. traditions, storytelling, celebration. GROUP ACTIVITY EXAMPLE 3 Classroom activity post-show Materials required: A short poem or story. Discuss how [MIS]CONCEIVE portrayed specific emotions or themes through movement. After reading the poem or story and in pairs, have students represent a particular emotion or theme through a movement. GROUP ACTIVITY EXAMPLE 4 Classroom activity post-show Discuss as a class the ways that [MIS]CONCEIVE portrayed specific emotions, stories or themes through lighting, sound and movement.
