8 1010 Valley Street Seattle, WA (206) Job Skills Training Program Fact Sheet for Reference Writers What is The Center for Wooden Boats? Located on the shore of Lake Union in the heart of Seattle s South Lake Union neighborhood, CWB is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving maritime heritage for future generations. We believe that it is essential to preserve the skills and stories associated with wooden small craft by teaching workshops, organizing events and igniting a passion for wood and water in young and old alike. What is the Job Skills Training Program? Job Skills Training is a program at CWB that has been made possible by funding from the Russell Grinnell Memorial Trust, the Lucky Seven Foundation, and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. CWB will hire 8-10 Crew Members to participate in a 12 week program in which students will learn various wood working and boat building skills. In addition to learning these new skills, Crew Members will have opportunities to learn about careers in the maritime trades through field trips, guest speakers and information sessions. Crew members will also receive training in resume and cover letter writing, job searching and interviewing. At the conclusion of the course, Crew Members will have the opportunity to apply for 2-3 paid summer internships at The Center for Wooden Boats. Who can apply for Job Skills Training? Job Skills Training is specifically designed to serve students from low-income and underserved backgrounds. If you can speak to this student s background or need, please do so in your reference. Applicants must be between 16 and 22 years old. How is the program structured? Crew Members work 14 hours per week for 12 weeks. Crew Members are paid a weekly stipend of $75 for their work at CWB. Training will be a balance between wood working/boat building instruction and job skills (information sessions, guest speakers, interview skills, etc.). How can you help? Due to the limited number of spaces available, we must give preference to those applicants whose materials, including their reference, arrive on time. For the sake of this young person, please be sure to get your reference to us as soon as possible. If this young person is accepted to the program, we also encourage you to check in with them throughout their time at The Center for Wooden Boats. You are welcome to attend our informational open house as well as kick-off events and end of season celebrations. For dates of these events or for more information about Job Skills Training, contact Tyson Trudel, Youth Program Coordinator: ttrudel@cwb.org or (206) ex
