1 Creating your Résumé on ECAP All UHS students will create a résumé through their Education Career Action Plan (ECAP) portfolio using the Résumé Creator tool. Students will be introduced to this resource at the end of their freshmen year and will have opportunities to update their resume each year in their Future Focused meetings. Students who keep their résumé updated will be well prepared for the college application process and to receive their counselor letter of recommendation! They will also be able to use their résumé to apply for jobs, internships, summer programs, and scholarships. Students can log on to their ECAP portfolio using the following information: Username: Student s Matric # Password: Student s Birthday (Ex: January 5, 2001 = January & January 22, 2001 = January222001) Complete ALL requested sections of the ECAP Résumé Creator as they apply to you. BE DESCRIPTIVE & DETAILED! Share the who, what, where, when, why and how. I. Education and Training Educational History Add every high school that you have attended and the dates in which you attended Use your best estimation of start and end date DO NOT list a Major or Degree Include your unweighted & weighted GPA, make sure to label which is which DO NOT list anything under Activities you will describe these in more details in the activities section Under Courses, simply list the # of AP course you will have taken when you graduate (EX: I have taken 12 AP course) Add any colleges you ve attended (any college classes you ve taken, ex: Pima or a summer program) Licenses & Certificates Add and describe any licenses or certificates you ve earned (first aid, CPR, wilderness training, etc.) Workshops & Trainings Add and describe any workshops or trainings you ve attended (leadership, job training, etc.) Standardized Tests Add all standardized tests you have taken (PSAT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, ACT, AP) You must include the exact date you took the test DO NOT include Time of Test or Location Put your score in the Test Results Notes II. Paid and Unpaid Work Work History Add all of your work experiences (include summer, part-time, and temporary job, paid or unpaid) Complete address, start & end date (use your best estimate), hours per week, and job title Describe your responsibilities, contributions, and/or achievements in the text box under Add Duty The Add Duty button allows for you to add another text box each text box will be a bullet point Volunteer Work/Community Service Add all of volunteer work or community service experiences

2 Include the organization name, address, start & end date (use your best estimate), hours per week or total hours if possible (if not, describe your time commitment in your description), Describe your role, responsibility and/or contributions in the text box under Add Duty The Add Duty button allows for you to add another text box each text box will be a bullet point III. Achievements, Activities, and Skills Achievements Add and describe in detail any achievements, recognitions, and awards for academics, extracurriculars, etc. that you received in high school Be sure to list if you are an AP Scholar, Scholar with Honor, or Scholar with Distinction (you can access these on your College Board account Include any scholarly work you have completed (research) Activities Add and describe in detail all activities you have done on and out of school (i.e. with community organizations, religious groups, sports clubs, etc). This includes: o Hobbies that you ve pursue for longer than 1 year o Activities, clubs, or sports you are/were involved in (include all activities in school, outs Choose what Type of Activity For Title name the activity Use your best estimation of start and end date and hours spent In the description, make sure to share all offices you have been elected to or positions held (president, secretary, team captain, etc.). If you are describing a sport, share your position or specialty. Skills Add and describe in detail all of your skills or special talents. Some examples of these would be: o Performing arts (dance, vocal, instrumental, instrument played, compositions, choreography work, accompanying music, sample pieces) o Language proficiency o Computer programming o Juggling o Any other skill or special talent you posses! IV. Contact Information & References Make sure that you complete all parts of the personal information section. 3 Putting Together the Senior Résumé To begin their college application process, all UHS students will be required to turn in Senior Résumé to their senior counselor. The Senior Résumé, along with a Senior Interview, will assist counselors in writing the students letter of recommendation for college admissions. Remember, the answers and information students provide to create their résumé differentiates them as an applicant before they ve even applied! Follow the guidelines below to put together your Senior Résumé (it s more than just your résumé!): I. Save your résumé as a file: Once all sections of the ECAP Résumé Creator are completed in detail, save your résumé as a file. Your résumé should be saved as a file to your ECAP portfolio at least 1 week before you are scheduled to have your interview. This gives counselors time to read over your résumé before your meeting. To save your resume as a file follow these steps: 1) Hover over My ECAP in the brown/red bar towards the top of your screen 2) Under How do I create or update my résumé? click on Résumé Creator 3) In the options bar on the left side of the screen, click on Create Résumé 4) Where it s says Previously Saved Options for Resume make sure it is reads New 5) Under Select Résumé Style select Recent Grad and check the box Include Dates in Résumé 6) Under Select References Options click Do not include references or statements 7) Click Next 8) Leave the Objectives & Summary of Qualifications boxes blank & leave all sections checked 9) At the bottom where it reads Résumé File Name, name your file with your first and last name and the date of your senior interview (Ex: Megan Brown ) 10) Click Save Résumé at the bottom of the screen II. Upload your additional Senior Resume materials: You must upload the following items to your ECAP portfolio at least 1 week before you are scheduled to have your interview. Again, this gives the counselors time to read over your materials before your meeting. To upload files to your ECAP portfolio 1) Hover over My ECAP in the brown/red bar towards the top of your screen 2) Under Where are my saved results? click on Stored Files and Links 3) To the right of My Files click on the + Add File button and choose the file to upload You will need to upload ONE document containing the following information: 1) Information about your parents a. Parent and/or guardian 1 (name, employer, position, college they attended & if they graduated) b. Parent and/or guardian 2 (name, employer, position, college they attended & if they graduated) c. Information about your step-parent(s), if applicable (name, employer, position) d. Name and ages of brothers and/or sisters e. Who you live with 2) An essay, prose, poem, literary criticism, song, etc. you ve already written (use work you ve done in your classes) 3) A document with answers to the following prompts (use the question/prompt in your answer!): a. What are your career goals? b. Where have you traveled? Include the dates, and what you did. c. What did you do the summer before this school year? d. What are three or more adjectives or sentences that best describe you?

4 e. How would your friends/teachers would describe you? f. What do you love to do so much you lose track of time? Why? g. What do you visualize yourself doing in the future? h. Describe a person or experiences that caused your view of the world to change. i. Write a personal manifesto that shares your philosophy of life, goals, dreams, motto that guides you, etc. 4) College Application Essays Complete 2 a. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. b. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? c. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? d. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. e. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. f. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? g. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. And you must also upload: 1) One parent and/or guardian letter of recommendation a. Parents and/or guardians: If you were to write your own son or daughter s letter of recommendation for college, what would it say? What academic, athletic, personal, etc. information do you believe would best highlight your child s qualities and accomplishments? 2) Two friend letters of recommendation 3) A copy of each letter you wrote for others Senior Resume Your Senior Resume is to be completed & saved as a file, and all additional materials uploaded, to your ECAP portfolio at least 1 week before your interview and no later than August 24, 2017! 5 College Application Checklist Upload your Senior Resume to your ECAP portfolio (August) Save your Senior Resume as a file Upload all additional Senior Resume materials Schedule your Senior Interview with your Senior Counselor (August) Noemi Morales (last names A-G) Thomas Donahue (last names H-P) Marcos Flores (last names Q-Z) Ask at least 2 teachers for letters of recommendation (August-October) Be considerate of your teacher s time; ask early & provide them with your resume Even if you are applying somewhere that does not ask for a letter of recommendation for the application process, you will need one for applying for scholarships Complete admissions applications (August-December) The Common Application (over 700 schools are on this one application) The in-state schools each have their own application An admissions application is not complete until: o The admissions application is submitted o Your official transcripts are sent o Your test scores (ACT/SAT) scores are sent o Your counselor and/or teacher recommendation is sent Complete the FAFSA the application opens on October 1 st! (October) Fill it out early people who fill it out early tend to get more money Use 2016 tax and income information Get assistance completing this form at one of our FAFSA Nights: o Tuesday, October 3 rd, 6:00pm-8:00pm in the College & Career Counseling Center o Tuesday, October 17 th, 6:00pm-8:00pm in the College & Career Counseling Center o Thursday, October 26 th, 6:00pm-8:00pm in the College & Career Counseling Center Complete the CSS/Profile (October) Uses 2016 tax & income information Check to see if the schools you re applying to require it (many out-of-state schools do!) Check your (s) and admitted student accounts often (August-May) When you receive information about creating an admitted student account, create it ASAP Many schools (and definitely the in-state schools!) will communicate important information to you through your admitted student account or Apply for scholarship (August-May) Apply for all and any! The more you apply to, the higher your chances are of getting on
