It introduces the beginning concepts of algebra and is appropriate for students with a weak background or no background in algebra. Topics include signed numbers, algebraic terminology, basic operations on algebraic expressions and exponents, solution of linear equations and inequalities, simple factoring, algebraic fractions, and word problems. PREREQUISITES A math placement test recommendation of "MAT 011" or MAT 010 with a minimum grade of "C." TOPICS COVERED: A review of whole number operations, fractions, decimals, and percents; signed numbers; properties of exponents; simplifying, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, algebraic expressions; solving equations (linear and literal); solving inequalities; simple factoring and algebraic fractions; simplifying radicals; word problem application. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon successfully completing this course, students should have the following knowledge and skills: 1. Use signed numbers, variables, distributive property, combining like terms appropriately. 2. Solve linear and literal equations. 3. Solve applications of linear equations and percentages. 4. Solve inequalities and their applications. 5. Understand and use the Cartesian coordinate system to graphing lines: vertical and horizontal lines, x and y-intercepts, changes to the horizontal and vertical scales of a graph. 6. Appropriately apply slope and understand applications of linear graphs. 7. Develop models for applications of linear graphs.

2 8. Use the calculator appropriately to solve growth and decay problems with exponents, finance problems and scientific notation. 9. Convert between scientific notation and decimal notation. 10. Apply properties of exponents. 11. Manipulate and solve multiplication, division, addition, subtraction of algebraic fractions, and fractional equations. 12. Solve applications of ratio and proportion problems. 13. Compute the addition, subtraction and multiplication of polynomials. 14. Use the calculator to approximate square roots. 15. Use and apply the quadratic formula appropriately. 16. Graph quadratic equations and apply appropriately to quadratic applications. 17. Understand common factors, factoring trinomials with a leading coefficient of one, factoring the difference of perfect squares, and solve equations by factoring. GRAPHING CALCULATOR HANDOUT: An Introduction to the TI-30X II Calculator can be found : This PowerPoint is a step-by-step introduction to using the TI - 30X IIS calculator. You can download it and work though the examples with your calculator in hand. GRADING Tests: Four major tests and a comprehensive final examination. Tests are worth 55% of your grade. The quizzes and worksheets (taken as one grade) are worth 25% and the final is worth 20%. QUIZZES Quizzes and worksheets will be counted as your total quiz grade.i will drop the lowest lowest two quizzes or worksheets. After that, a missed quiz or worksheet counts as a zero. SCALE: Final course grades are assigned as follows % A 90-92% A % B % B

3 80-83% B % C % C 60-69% D Below 60 F MAKEUP EXAM POLICY: a makeup exam will NOT be given under any circumstances. WITHDRAWAL: Requests for grades of W will be denied after the Last Day of Scheduled Classes. No withdrawal forms will be signed during the designated final exam period.
