1 (Blackboard 7.2) Using Turnitin with AUTonline The Turnitin extension gives lecturers the ability to add Turnitin assignments to their AUTonline course. Students can now submit papers to AUTonline and Turnitin all in one submission. Students can now view their originality report in AUTonline, and lecturers can grade the student directly in the Gradebook. Creating a Turnitin Assignment Instructors need to create a Turnitin assignment in the Control Panel. You can add a Turnitin assignment to any of the Content Areas, eg 'Assignments' or Assessments. 1. Go to the Control Panel and add the Turnitin assignment to whichever content area you wish it to appear in eg click the Assignments link in the Content Areas, to add a Turnitin assignment to your course. 2. Use the pull-down menu on the right side of the screen and select Turnitin Assignment and then click GO 1

You will now see the Turnitin interface, and you will need to enter the following information: Choose paper assignment (or revision assignment but you will need to have created a paper assignment first) Assignment title Point Value (optional) When an instructor creates an assignment he or she will have the option to set the dates and times for the assignment. All assignments have three dates: the start date, the due date and the post date. Start date (is the date that students can begin submitting their papers to an assignment - unless the option to allow submissions after the due date is selected, students will not be able to submit their paper once the due date has passed) Due date (final date for submitting the assignment unless the instructor has set the assignment to allow late submissions, no submissions can be made after an assignment's due date.) Post date (the post date must occur after the due date. The post date is the date grades, and peer reviews become available for students to view.) Enter any special assignment instructions you have (optional) 4. Choose whether or not to generate originality reports. 5. If you want to access advanced options such as allow students to view originality reports, choose show advanced assignment option. 2

3 The advanced assignment options allows you to make the following choices: Options for originality report - immediately (first report is final) - immediately (can overwrite previous reports until due date) - on due date (generate report on the due date) Whether or not to allow students to see the originality report Whether or not to allow submissions after the due date Whether or not to allow other papers to be check against submission. Allow other papers to be check against submissions? (Select yes if you would like to have papers submitted to this assignment stored in our database of student papers and used for future searches. If you do not want papers submitted to this assignment stored in our database, select no. If you choose not to have papers stored in our database, you will not be able to check submissions against our student paper database. What type of sources you would like to compare student submissions against. Whether or not to save these advanced options as your default setting for future assignment creation. Select yes if you would like to use your settings for all future assignments. Otherwise, select no to use the default settings. 6. Once your information is correct, click Submit to complete the Turnitin assignment creation. Once an Assignment has been added to your course, your students can now submit a paper to the Turnitin Assignment. 3

4 Submitting Papers Students will access the assignment from their Assignments menu (or whatever content area you the lecturer have placed the Turnitin assignment in). Instructors can also submit papers to an assignment from their assignments page. To open the assignments page, click the Assignment link on the course homepage. Click on the view/complete link next to the assignment you would like to submit a paper to. The submission form will then open. Students need to open the assignments page, by clicking the assignments link within their course. Then a list of available course assignments is shown. To submit a paper to an assignment the student needs to do the following: 1. Click the view/complete link next to the assignment they want to submit a paper to 2. Click the submit icon for the paper. 3. Enter a paper title. 4. Click the browse button to locate the file they want to submit. 5. Click submit. On the following page they will be asked to confirm the text of the submission. If the text is correct, they click yes, submit to finalize the submission. Note: If your students have been given access to Originality Reports, they can view their submission and report by clicking on an assignment s view/complete link. This will take the student to his or her assignment portfolio. In this screen the student can click the Originality Report icon to view his or her Originality Report. Please note that by default students cannot access reports. 4

5 Looking at Student s Papers in Turnitin When the students have completed the assignment and submitted the paper, the instructor then can open the student's paper from the Control Panel. Click on Turnitin Assignments Choose View under the specific assignment from which you want to view the results. To view the paper, click the name under the Title column. 5

6 Under Originality Score Report, you will see the percentage of the student's paper that is NOT original, based on Turnitin's database. Click on the percentage to view the Turnitin report. NOTE: If you need to go back to edit your Turnitin Assignment eg change the date you can go to the Control Panel Turnitin Assignment then click on the edit assignment 6

7 VIEWING RESULTS You can view the results of submitted papers from your Control Panel. Go to the Control Panel in your course. On the Control panel page, click on the Turnitin Assignments link in the Course Tools section. By default the Originality Report shows you only the highest percentage matches. If you would like to see an exhaustive list of sources, you can switch to the show matches one at a time mode. The assignment will show in the gradebook, however, the assignment must be viewed through Turnitin Assignments in the Course Tools Area. 7
