ACTIVITIES. i. Participation at the National Week of Science and Technology (Semana de Ciencia y Tecnología) at INAOE in Tonanzintla, Puebla. ii. BBQ to increase number of members of the chapter. iii. Participation at the 2nd International Fair of Reading, performed at the INAOE on February 14 to 17, iv. Participation at the Total Eclipse of Moon, performed at the Zocalo of Mexico City. February 20 th, v. Cultural Film Projections Cine entre amigos. A successful Workshop Part of our work as a Student Chapter consists of developing techniques to explain and understand the optics science in order to motivate to others. One way to do this is by building little and easy to understand instruments with low cost materials, such as telescopes, microscopes or periscopes. We are sure that this represents an attractive way to teach and understand the optics. One of the simplest instruments is the periscope because is easy to build using only two mirrors and a piece of cardboard. This instrument was the motivation of the Periscope Workshop as a part of the activities of the 2 st International Reading Fair (FILEC) organized by the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Tonantzintla, Puebla. This event was very important in the state of Puebla because was the framework of the 66 th anniversary of the National Observatory foundation, today INAOE. This way almost 20,000 children of different schools were invited to participated in these activities. Although there were almost 74 different activities and workshops, it was necessary to participate with the kaleidoscope Workshop.
3 The success of both workshops was evident with the building of approximately nine hundred kaleidoscopes and almost one thousand periscopes. This was possible not only with the participation of each member of our Student Chapter, but also with the collaboration of invited friends and parents who were working together for four days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. What a experience!. In our personal opinion, it was an exciting and hard experience with many positive results respect to our organization and collaboration in a great event. By other hand we now know that the simplicity of the periscope was very accepted for the kids and easy to understand. This way, the Periscope Workshop has been required for other schools and visitors who have come to the Institute. The most important fact is that children can understand and explain the optics inside of the periscope. This is an example of how we can improve the teaching and learning of optics science for children. In fact, with this kind of workshops we have motivated to others, including old people, so that they can research a little bit more about the applications of optics. We would like to increase the number of workshops with the brilliant ideas of our members.
4 14va. Semana Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología. 14 th National Week of Science & Technology. This activity was performed from November 22 nd to November 28 th children with secondary-school level from 3 different schools were invited to INAOE in order to give receive talks about Optics given by SPIE chapter members. After the talk, all the children were invited to see and play with many different experiments such as Color mixture, Wave Propagation, Interference, Fiber Optics basics and Diffraction. In pictures can be seen the talk that was given before they could see and interact with the experiments. This talk was about the principles of Optics so they could have information about the why and how of all experiments. Maria Luisa giving the talk to all students that assisted to the Event. In next pictures can be seen how the students observed and interacted with all of the experiments. Maripaz and Benito with an Experiment Reylé and Enrique talking about Wave Propagation.

Rosario performing mixture of Colors. 2 nd International Fair of Reading 2a Feria Internacional de Lectura (FILEC) FILEC Workshops Kaleidoscope and Periscope Workshops were given at the FILEC 2008 (Feria Internacional del Lectura International Fair of Reading) where approximately 20,000 persons participated in both workshops from February 14 th to 17 th at the INAOE. a) The Kaleidoscope Workshop was given to public in general, in which they received information about the principles of
6 reflection and the visual effects of this beautiful instrument. The required material for each kaleidoscope was prepared in a kit, such that each person could build their own instrument with a simple instruction. This workshop was a great experience because we could see a lot of kids and old people, enjoying and playing with their kaleidoscope. b) The Periscope Workshop was also prepared for all kind of public. The fundamental idea was to give a brief explanation about the instrument and its applications. Each person, who was interested in this workshop, could build its own periscope using very simple materials. The result of this workshop was extraordinary because a lot of people were interested in the periscopes and also in Optics Science. a) Kaleidoscope workshop Introduction to the kaleidoscope workshop Juan Carlos, Miguel Angel, Reyle and Benito at the kaleidoscope workshop.

SPIE members gave support to INAOE in the Total Moon Eclipse Event on February 20 th, 2008, this activity took place at the Mexico City main downtown (Zócalo). Telescopes were carried to the Zócalo so that people could get the basic information about this phenomenon and see with more precision the effect of the eclipse. Approximately 1,000 persons observed this wonderful phenomenon.

10 BBQ Activity Picture after enjoying the BBQ. On November 22 nd of 2007, a BBQ was performed in order to get more members to the chapter. For this activity SPIE and OSA chapters put together all their efforts and the final cost of the whole BBQ was half and half between two chapters. For this BBQ all new students and professors from Optics Department were invited and each chapter gave an informal talk about all activities performed and new projects to do. Students, professors and members enjoying the BBQ
