5 Prof. Dr. Joachim Appel English KVV WiSe 2006/07 Research Seminar: Verbal Interaction in the Language Classroom (Module 5/6) Di Language teaching is talk. Just exactly how this talk functions in the classroom is still being researched. The seminar will involve students in research on this question. Our aim is to record and analyse language lessons at school. Each participant is required to find a teacher/school to cooperate with and to observe, record, and analyse a language lesson or part of it. Part one: students will be given background information on theories of verbal interaction in the language classroom. Part two: students will go out and do field work Part three: students will report on their work. Registration: Obligatgory Vorbesprechung: Wednesday 19 th July, 12.00h room: A 206 Schein: research project. Introductory reading: Auer, P. (1999). Sprachliche Interaktion. Registration: Vorbesprechung in Ludwigsburg am Uhr Raum A 206 Page 6 of 38

29 Dipl.-Päd. Marion Rodgers English KVV WiSe 2006/07 Language in Classroom Interaction, Module 4C; (HS/ RS) Mo or Intensive course: , The aim of this practically-oriented course is to equip the future teacher of English with the necessary authentic classroom language skills. These are indispensable since the giving of instructions and asking questions are some of the few genuinely communicative acts which take place in the foreign language classroom. The various units of classroom phrases will be grouped around key situations and activities in the classroom. Previous knowledge is of minor importance but regular attendance and active participation are expected. The following book is recommended: Hughes, G. S. (2001): A Handbook of Classroom English. 13 th impr. Oxford: Oxford University Press. Registration: Please sign up on the list on my notice board. For the intensive course, please send your registration to Rodgers@ph-ludwigsburg.de till 31 st January. Fächerverbund Sprache (Leitfach GHS 2003, RPO 2003), Module 1, FV b: Second Language Methodology Advanced Language Competence: Giving Presentations, Module 5/6 Mi The prospect of public speaking is often frightening for many people. However, teachers, students and pupils will have to give talks or make oral presentations during the course of their careers. This seminar is specifically designed for students who have little or no experience of giving presentations and intends to equip them with the necessary skills for doing this. The following issues will be dealt with: basic principles for preparing and delivering your presentation, outlining and putting it into words, using audiovisual aids, criteria for evaluation, how to help pupils develop skills for giving successful presentations at school. Regular attendance, active participation and a presentation which will take into account what we have learnt in the course of the seminar, are expected. The number of participants will be limited to 24. Registration: Send an to rodgers@ph-ludwigsburg.de Page 29 of 38
30 Dipl.-Päd. Marion Rodgers English KVV WiSe 2006/07 Secondary-Specific Ways of Teaching (RS), Module 3b Do The course is based on a series of teacher training modules which aim to develop practical skills in teaching English as a foreign language. The training sessions will involve demonstrations, discussions and pair/group work. We will focus on the following areas of methodology: planning a lesson, presenting and practising vocabulary, presenting and practising structures, using a reading text, reading/writing/listening activities, asking questions, giving instructions and communicative activities etc. I would strongly recommend the students on school practice at the Realschule Korntal- Münchingen to join this course since it will offer the opportunity to try out the principles of teaching that we have discussed during the course. A series of articles offering theoretical and practical background knowledge will be presented and discussed in small groups on a weekly basis (continuous assessment). There will also be an end-of-term test. Registration: Please sign up on the list on my notice board. The following books are recommended as preliminary or follow-up reading to the issues dealt with in the course: Timm, Johannes P. (1998): Englisch lernen und lehren. Didaktik des Englischunterrichts. 31 Dipl.-Päd. Marion Rodgers English KVV WiSe 2006/07 Fächerverbund Sprache (Leitfach RPO 2003) Module 2, FV b: Project Methodology Contemporary British literature in the classroom a project-based workshop. Mi Fifteen-year-old Christopher has a photographic memory. He understands maths. He understands science. What he can t understand are other human beings. When he finds his neighbour s dog lying dead on the lawn, he decides to track down the killer and write a murder mystery about it. But what other mysteries will he end up uncovering? The course objective is to learn how to make the challenge of reading authentic literature accessible and motivating for learners, how to arouse their interest, how to engage their minds, interests and feelings and how to help them to experience the story from the inside out, not from the outside looking in. We will read the novel during the course and try out various processes and approaches related to teaching literature for adolescents. Students must have the following book by the beginning of term and bring it with them to the first session: Mark Haddon (2004). The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Please make sure to have the version published by Red Fox (ISBN ). Regular attendance and active participation are expected. Credits will be given for homework, a reading journal, short presentations, a performance and an essay. The course will be held in English and numbers will be restricted to 25. Registration: Please send your registration to Rodgers@ph-ludwigsburg.de till 15th September Intensive course in Language Accuracy (Improve your English Grammar Skills) , This voluntary intensive course in English grammar aims to reduce the difficulties / weaknesses even advanced students of English have in areas such as infinitives, gerunds, participles etc. It will follow a more inductive approach and indirectly aims to demonstrate a communicative or task-based model for teaching grammar in secondary school. It is a language course open to all students of English who wish to improve their language accuracy in a more practical / less theoretical way. Regular attendance and active participation are expected. Registration: Please send your registration to rodgers@ph-ludwigsburg.de till 31 st January. Page 31 of 38

We will be dealing with the question of how we should plan, organise, carry out and evaluate our lessons. Reports from the students teaching practice and video recordings will offer valuable insights into real classroom interaction that will then be analysed and discussed. Furthermore, demonstrations of short teaching units on specific topics will help students to gain a clearer understanding of their own implicit assumptions and their teaching strategies.
