1 CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN MADISON COUNTY SCHOOLS #BeUncommon A Publication of Madison Career & Technical Center MCTC Calendar of Events School-Based Interns ~ by Matthew Prater The school-based interns at Madison Career & Technical Center worked as assistants at the Madison County Schools Reality Fair held at Rosa Scott on September Ninth graders from across the school district learned about budgeting, choosing insurance and housing, how to balance their checkbooks, and much more. The students were able to have hands-on interactive lessons with the companies hosting the events. 2 area. It will also have college applications, and can be used to highlight our other Academies! This is a useful and visible tool for our school. MCHS Academy of Engineering Students from Madison Central s Engineering Academy recently volunteered at the Children s Museum. Former Student, Stephanie Columnas from a parent of a former MCTC student on 9/8/17 The students assisted visitors at the Children s Museum in building catapults. Upon completion of their catapults, the children were able to shoot miniature marshmallows at a bucket target. Hi Ms. Hutchinson, Stephanie joined the Air Force and is planning to become a flight nurse. When she comes back from her Air Force tech school, she will take her CNA certification exam. She is also planning to take pre-nursing school in between her military duties. WorkBased Learning I would like to say thank you to MCTC and Ms. Jordan specifically for gearing her up to be in the medical field and to serve our country well. We are excited to announce our Work-Based learning job board is up at Madison Central. This board will be used to showcase job availabilities in our Thank you, Bing (Stephanie s mom) HEALTH SCIENCES (MRS. SLAUGHTER) CLINICAL CHECK-OFF Student Katherine Earl (left) is taking Student Gabriela Sanchez s (right) blood pressure in Mrs. Slaughter s Health Science II class. Katherine is placing the sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) on Gabriela s upper arm and placing the stethoscope just above the forearm to measure her blood pressure while Mrs. Slaughter assists. The class is performing their clinical check off procedures. This is a great way to help the students visualize how to correctly measure vital signs on the patient! 2

3 POLYMER SCIENCE In Polymer Science, students study the classification of polymers and are able to perform many hands-on science experiments. In the photo to the right, a first year student is making crystals during a lab. Oliver s crystal has grown tremendously in size throughout the experiment. The students are also able to do other things like use SolidWorks, a 3D design software, and work with epoxy resin. Both first and second year students are combined into one class, making them really work together as a family. Simulation & Animation Design On Aug. 24, 2017 in the class of Simulation & Animation Design, students used the video game Super Mario Bros. to develop team and leadership skills. Students were given a limited amount of time to play through as many levels as possible and compete against other groups to see who could get the furthest in the game in the fastest amount of time. This challenge encouraged our students to rely on each other to complete the task, follow the instructions of one another, and communicate effectively. This approach to building teamwork effectively kept the students engaged and still translated to them the necessity of effective teamwork to accomplish goals. Flight Paramedics, nurses, and pilots walk out of the UMMC helicopter to talk to the students of Germantown High School after landing there minutes before. GHS Academy of Healthcare Excellence Univ. of Mississippi Medical Center s flight crew made a stop at MCTC to give students an opportunity to meet the staff and see the equipment in the medical helicopters. They fly all over Mississippi in order to save lives and took time out of their busy schedules in order to give our students a closer look at their jobs. A student from SAD recently dressed up as Luigi, a popular video game star from Super Mario Bros., for their team development day. 3

4 Velma Jackson Academy of Multimedia This month students demonstrated the teaching of how to dress for an interview. Throughout the lesson, the importance of professional behavior and courtesy were emphasized. Some of the Do s and Don ts included: DO dress the part for the job, the company, and the industry, DO plan to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early, DO turn off or mute your cellphone, and put it out of sight, DO be sure to greet the receptionist or assistant and other staff members with courtesy and respect, DO bring a notepad, in case you need to jot down anything of interest regarding the job, DO shake hands firmly, make eye contact, and smile when you are introduced to someone. DO wait until you are offered a chair before sitting. DON T arrive late, DON T dress inappropriately, DON T eat, drink, or chew gum during the interview, and DON T drink alcohol prior to the interview, DON T smoke before or during the interview, DON T answer cellphone calls or send or respond to texts during the interview. Keep your cellphone turned off and stowed away. Construction The Construction program s motto is Building Hope and this is a fitting title for this very useful class. The students in this class practice year-round for Skills USA competitions both locally and at the state levels. The students also build items for MadCAAP, Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty, and the items are auctioned off to provide funds that go to support MADCAAP. A student is building a cabinet to practice for a SkillsUSA Competition. This swing was built to be auctioned with proceeds going to MADCAAP and to fund the class s lumber costs. 5 Ridgeland s Academy of Culinary Arts Ridgeland High School s Academy of Culinary Arts was recently visited by the administration from Pascagoula Gushier School District. They were given a tour of the newly renovated kitchen. Afterwards they were shown to the library where they were presented with a four-course dinner cooked and served by the members of culinary arts. The dinner consisted of an appetizer, salad, pasta entree, and dessert. The administrators came to review the progress of the new program, which was started nearly three years ago. It has grown from being an all sophomore class to including juniors and freshmen. Next year it will expand its curriculum to include seniors as well. During the meal, they discussed bringing more programs to Ridgeland. Madison Central s Academy of Multimedia & Communications In this academy, students have been learning how to work with cameras, microphones, green screens, and many other tools. They are able to shoot and edit videos. Pictured is a student working on her video. RIDGELAND HIGH SCHOOL S ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING In Ridgeland High School s Academy of Engineering, the first-year fundamental classes are researching Nuclear Power plants. Their current project is to design a protection system for the power plant s entrance. A speaker from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency visited the class to review their progress and give advice on aspects they may have missed while planning their project. Students used the design process to create their concept for the protection system. The classes were given build constraints such as cost and size to work with. A good design would be cost friendly, ergonomic, and effective in containing radiation. At the end of the lessons each student will create a board review, Shark Tank style. They will present their idea to the rest of the class, who will be judging them on their presentation skill, their use of the design process, and how effective the product is. The presentations will consist of a CAD version of the protection system, a prepared speech, and a notebook written while in the designing stages. 5

6 AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES For the first time, ever students in Automotive Service I and II will have the chance to pass and graduate Mr. Dale McCraw s and ASE certified. Mr. McCraw has made history earning this achievement for him and his students in the month of September. They can now graduate ready for work coming from a NATEF certified program. What an achievement! NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) is for this course. This is the first course in Mississippi to achieve this. MCTC s Automotive Service program earns NATEF Certification. VEX Robotics at MCTC Health Sciences Mrs. Jordan Health Science students from Mrs. Jordan s class participated in a Health Occupational Students of America, or HOSA, Saturday Event. It consisted of meeting new members, learning more about the organization, and playing fun games. They also danced and were able to hear from some of the presidential candidates for HOSA this year. These types of meetings really promote student participation in HOSA and make it a great club where students of similar interests get to become involved. VEX robotics students are are currently building robots for this year s game, In The Zone. In The Zone uses cones as the main scoring object with different set zones and poles to put the cones in or onto. The newer teams are learning how to build, program, and drive their robots, while the more seasoned teams have already begun building their design prototypes. While this year s game may be difficult, the teams have embraced the challenge with open minds and a lot of parts. 6

7 informative and amazing study of Health Science Core! They are studying medical terminology and watching My Sister's Keeper in as it relates to the chapter they just completed on Medical Law & Ethics. When they practice for their tests, they interactively study with each other for optimal learning, and it reflects in their work and knowledge of their practice. MCTC s Robotics & Engineering Students in Robotics and Engineering I were introduced to 3D modeling this 9 weeks. They started using SolidWorks to shape and mold virtual threedimensional models of real world objects. The objects ranged from flat objects like light switches to extreme curves such as water bottles. They are learning skills that will be a great help to them later in life. Teacher Academy MCTC s Teacher Academy class is helping the victims of Hurricane Harvey in a very creative way! Mrs. Dantzler received an from a teacher in Houston that held a book club. She said she missed reading to her kids after the intensity of the Hurricane put it to a halt. Mrs. Dantzler and her students decided to each pick a children s book to record themselves reading and send it in to the Houston teacher. What a unique way to help out the victims of Hurricane Harvey! Way to go, Teacher Academy! Health Sciences Mrs. Kelly Mrs. Kelly s first year class is full of eager students ready to apply themselves to the 7

8 MCTC s Digital Media New Green Screen Wall in Lab Madison Career & Technical Center recently added a green wall to their digital media lab. Students are now able to film or photograph something in front of the green wall and then superimpose anything or anyone into the photograph by using editing software. This technology involves the mixing of two images together and allows the students the opportunity to be more creative in their digital media projects. 8
