Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 1 Why do it? 1 Why do it? 1.1 Introduction Recent findings show that vounteers report higher ratings on the measures of ife satisfaction, happiness, and feeing that the things they do in ife are worthwhie. Last year the number of peope vounteering at east once a month rose to 29%, which may be thanks in part to the high profie vounteering received during the 2012 London Oympic Games. Jennie Rayner, CSV Communications Officer, 2014 Vounteering is ceary a major concern, and can contribute to the deveopment of skis to enhance empoyabiity. The opportunities for vounteering can be very varied. The 2012 Oympics depended on 70,000 vounteers, and vounteering can aso invove for exampe doing gardening for an od ady once a week. Any vountary work wi hep deveop the skis to enhance your empoyabiity, but if you re not aready invoved it s worth taking time to assess what you ve got to offer and what woud suit you best. The more enthusiastic and committed you are, the more ikey you are to improve your job prospects. If you are aready doing vountary work, but want to expore how to use it to improve your job prospects, then just use Sections Standing out from the crowd Vounteering ooks great on your CV.It s the perfect way to get a taste of working ife and gain skis and experience CSV website Empoyers are impressed by vountary work, but what are the hard facts about this? Research carried out by Reeds Recruitment agency for the charity Timebank found that: 73 per cent of empoyers woud empoy a candidate with vounteering experience over one without; 94 per cent of empoyers beieve that vounteering can add to skis; 58 per cent of empoyers say that vountary work experience can actuay be more vauabe than experience gained in paid empoyment; 94 per cent of empoyees who vounteered to earn new skis had benefited either by getting their first job, improving their saary, or being promoted. 7 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 1 Why do it? There is ceary itte doubt about how empoyers see the benefits of vountary work. Athough a vountary work can be interesting to them there are some careers where reevant work experience is a prerequisite. 1.3 Essentia vountary work experience For entry and progression into many careers, vountary work experience is essentia. Teaching, Law, Environmenta/Conservation and Socia Work are common exampes but there are many others. Positions in the Arts, Media, Pubishing, Deveopment and Charitabe sectors are rarey advertised and are aso difficut to enter without a network of contacts, direct practica experience of the industry and enormous enthusiasm. For more detais on any of these ook at the Prospects website, which gives exceent job profies, and contacts and resources to get you started. Initia experience in any of these careers is usuay unpaid, and so counts as vountary work. The boundaries between this type of vounteering and others are a bit burred, because athough it is a necessary career strategy it can sti benefit the community, especiay in the areas of teaching and socia work. Even in the Arts and Media, vounteers can buid up invauabe work experience in projects such as writing for Charities Facebook sites, oca radio broadcasts, Street Art projects etc. Activity 1: Think about Whatever your objectives, ook at the comments beow to hep you assess what you want from vountary work. A range of vounteers give their reasons for wanting to get invoved. Try and think which vountary activities might meet their needs, then ook at the answers to see what they ended up doing. You may identify with some of them, but this shoud at east demonstrate some of the huge variety of options avaiabe. I was bored, with time on my hands whie the kids were at schoo. I just wanted to fee usefu, but preferred something heping chidren. I reaised my own were very privieged. Took part in a pioneering CSV project that matches vounteers with famiies where there are chidren on the chid protection register, working aongside socia workers who don t have time for frequent visits to a homes of chidren on at risk register. I wasn t happy with what was going on at my son s schoo, so I decided to try and make things change. He became a schoo governor. This was a serious commitment, but he ater used the understanding he gained in finance, personne and strategic panning to appy for a management-eve position. I was shocked at an artice about the number of young offenders in my town and decided to get invoved. She became a mentor with NACRO and worked with two young offenders before and after their reease, heping them get training and eventuay a job. I beieve passionatey in human rights and wanted to make things happen. 8 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 1 Why do it? They wanted to make their views known, so apart from heping with pubicity campaigns for Amnesty Internationa, they are now writing for an onine magazine News Channe. Both of these activities aow them to be reay fexibe with their commitment, and work odd hours at home. This is vita as they trave for their job a ot. I ve aways been good at sport and my boss suggested I try coaching. He said it woud aso ook good on my CV, but I don t know how when I m in a banking job. Mike became a eader and coach with a disabiity sports group, as we as coaching martia arts at a oca youth cub. After two years he reaised he had experience in teaching and mentoring, and had aso deveoped skis in organising, promotions, managing a budget and team-buiding. He d demonstrated commitment, enthusiasm and great communication skis. A of this contributed to a promotion to training manager in his department. 'I knew I wanted to work in environmenta conservation, but found out you don t get anywhere without a background of reevant vountary work.' For Jo, weekend stints as a vountary warden for the RSPB turned into onger periods at a reserve in Scotand during her summer vacation. She is now appying for a futime post as a reserve warden with specia responsibiity for events and promotions. (Note: this is an exampe of essentia work experience, mentioned earier in Section 1, even though it aso counted as vountary work.) Finay, two common concerns and an encouraging message... I didn t think I was good at anything, and neary didn t even bother to appy anywhere. Jess saw an artice in the oca press about the befriending scheme for housebound edery peope. She now reaises that she coud offer commitment, an interest in peope and a friendy but practica approach. She visits two od men and does their shopping and gardening. She is currenty ooking to get more invoved in community work and is visiting schoos and oca organisations to encourage more vounteers. I ve just been made redundant and have been advised to try some vountary work to get me out of the house, and maybe hep my job prospects. I m aso hoping it wi cheer me up. David had been trying to get a job without success and decided to vounteer with CSV to gain experience. He vounteered for eight months at a residentia care home for peope with earning disabiities and now has been given a fu-time job at the project case study, CSV website. Listen to what some OU vounteers say about why they started vountary work. 9 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 2 What can I offer? 2 What can I offer? 2.1 Introduction 'A experiences count and are vauabe and no one shoud push those aside. It reay doesn't matter where that experience was gained. It's about what you earnt from it don't devaue yoursef. Recognise the importance of what you've done.' Ruth Stokes, KPMG on the vountary work section of the OU Careers Advisory Service website Many peope are indeed unaware of just how much they coud offer the community or a good cause, and underestimate their strengths and experience. You need to assess your skis, experience, interests and then baance a of this against your practica circumstances and any possibe constraints. The worksheets have ots of suggestions and prompts and you shoud find this an encouraging exercise. 2.2 Identifying skis and persona quaities There are severa ways to approach this: Refective It s a great opportunity to refect about yoursef and to ask others, your friends, famiy or coeagues just what they think as we. Be reaistic about your strengths and your weaknesses. Ask them to be honest; weaknesses can be just as important as strengths here! Look at the Know yoursef section of the OU Careers Advisory Service website, which covers persona strengths and skis. Activity 2 Use Worksheet 1 as a prompt for ideas, and to record your concusions. Worksheet 1 View document Practica You might aso ike to try accessing websites such as Do-it or the websites of any of the major charities. They describe the persona quaities needed for any of their vacancies e. g. being non-judgmenta, patient, fexibe. Check out how you match up. These sites wi aso say if there are any specific skis required for a post, such as IT, driving etc. and give an idea about practica considerations, ike time commitment. 10 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 3 What woud suit me? Activity 3 Use Worksheet 2 as a prompt for assessing how your vountary work might be shaped by issues such as mobiity, time avaiabe, ocation etc. There are some suggested soutions for any potentia probems, e.g. virtua vounteering for those who can ony offer irreguar time sots or those with a ack of mobiity. Worksheet 2 View document 3 What woud suit me? You shoud now have buit up a reaistic picture about what you want to achieve and what you have to offer and be abe to match up a of these against some possibe activities. Here are some different ways to get you started: Have another ook at some of the statements in Section 1.3. These are just to get you thinking but you might identify with some of the vounteers. There are exceent websites to hep you match your interests, experience and persona circumstances to actua vacancies, so you might find it hepfu to try inserting your persona specifications into any of the foowing websites using their drop-down menus. There are other suggested sources of vounteering oportunities in this unit's references section. 1) Do-it You can insert preferred geographica area and avaiabiity, and seect from drop-down menus of your type of interest and the kind of activity you woud ike to do, e.g. befriending, buddying, driving, ega work, artistic, etc. 2) Vounteering Engand Vounteer Deveopment Scotand Vounteering Ireand Vounteering Waes The sites ist the main categories of vountary work, such as anima wefare, arts and heritage, community deveopment and campaigning, and heath and socia care (incuding sections reating to young peope, edery, disabed, etc.). There are aso subcategories, e. g. for campaign vounteering, these incude discrimination/human and civi rights, environment and conservation, and poitica parties. The Vounteering Engand site aso contains vounteer bogs. 3) Directgov Search vounteer opportunities, mainy community-based. The drop-down ists of activities range from finance to entertainment and ists of interests from heritage to homeess and housing. 4) Charities Websites of many charities aso have drop-down ists of skis/interests, commitment eve, ocation, and preferred roe type, e.g. Sue Ryder Care and the RSPCA. Other charities 11 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 4 Getting started such as CSV provide a range of activities to seect from, for exampe supporting an at risk famiy or heping at a oca schoo. Most are very informative and user-friendy. They aso widen your horizons about what type of work you can do. Many peope never think beyond the fundraising aspect, but at the RSPCA, for exampe, vounteers can wak dogs at the oca sheter, home-visit prospective adopters or do home-based computer work (updating the web or databases, etc). 5) Other organisations Register your skis directy on an organisation's database and they seect appropriate activities for you. For exampe, the Rotary vounteers database incudes individuas with a broad range of skis such as radio operators, soicitors, beekeepers, natura resource managers and pumbers. There are opportunities to vounteer both ocay and internationay. The Rotary Foundation has 32,000 cubs in 200 countries with 1.2 miion members. Their roe is to serve communities both at home and abroad. 6) Vounteer centres You can visit your oca vounteer centre to chat about what you might ike to do with one of the vounteer coordinators, who wi know a the opportunities in your area. 7) Case studies You can find these on most arge charity websites and the websites given above. They give a rea insight into the vounteer s activities and achievements. The Open University s Careers Advisory Service website incudes John Pierre-Madigan's story, which mentions the vaue of vounteering. 4 Getting started Here s a seven-point action pan to hep get you started and activities to give you ideas about creating deveopment opportunities and monitoring the progress you make. 1) Review your objectives/wish ist (see Section 1). Be cear about what you want to achieve and how much time you can offer (it coud be quite sma!). 2) Review your own interests, and what you have to offer, incuding any possibe constraints. Be reaistic (see Sections 2 and 3). 3) Shortist the organisations that are the cosest fit to your needs. 4) Check opportunities on their websites, genera websites (see sources of reference) or at your oca vounteer bureau. Find your nearest at Do-it. 5) Appy preferaby to just two or three. 6) Prepare for interviews, if necessary (see section 5). Usuay, there wi be no forma interview just a quick chat to introduce you to what s going on. 7) Compete training and induction, if necessary. Again, for many posts a five-minute induction chat is a you need. Activity 4 Once you have commenced vounteering, use Worksheet 3 to record the detais and create a vounteering og. 12 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 6 Impressing empoyers Worksheet 3 View document You can aso use the og for jotting down ideas about further vounteering possibiities, so you have an easy format to compare what s invoved with different organisations. If you reay want to impress empoyers it s crucia that you continuay review your achievements and ook at ways to enhance your vountary experience. Many arge charities are very proactive in heping you deveop the range of your activities and invovement, but you might need to take the initiative yoursef and create your own opportunities to improve your empoyabiity. Activity 5 Continue your vounteering og (Worksheet 3), uness you are very sure that everything is just for the purpose of enjoying the new experiences for their own sake and for the sake of those you re heping. You need to review and record: what you did whie vounteering and what you have achieved what you earned and what skis you deveoped what training or induction you received how you want to improve from here. This eads on to next steps, with strategies to deveop your work and improve job prospects even further. 6 Impressing empoyers '69 per cent of empoyers have done vountary work in their ifetime, with over haf stating that vounteering gave them peope skis which heped them get to where they are today. Haf of empoyers say that job candidates with vounteering experience are more motivated than other candidates.' James Caan, Dragons' Den There is no doubt that the soft' skis you can deveop in your vountary work wi serve you we when job-seeking, but how to convince the empoyers you have what they want? If you examine job advertisements, they wi usuay specify exacty which transferabe skis they want, in addition to any forma quaifications or experience. For exampe, must have exceent communication skis, and abiity to work on your own or as part of a team is a very common requirement. The trick is to anayse them carefuy, and then, using the right words, give hard evidence that makes the empoyer want to meet you to find out more. So when they ask for communication skis, don t just take the phrase at face vaue. Think about a the different ways you can communicate for exampe: istening and empathising 13 of 18 Thursday 21st August 2014

Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 6 Impressing empoyers conveying information ceary and accuratey good written expression in reports, artices or etters adapting stye and content of communication appropriatey, depending on the audience using anguage persuasivey to negotiate, convince, mediate, se, etc. pubic speaking or presentations. understanding information. Don t just present empoyers with a random ist of a your skis; you must convince them that they are exacty what they want. They wi appreciate that you ve anaysed what their post requires and matched reevant exampes of your experience. How do you convince them you are the right person for the job? Before you can convince them that you re just the person they need, you first need to know what they want. There is a hepfu section on the OU Careers Advisory Service website that wi take you through the process. Activity 7 Whatever skis you ve deveoped and you shoud have a good record if you ve been keeping up your vounteering og you need to put them in a reevant context of evidence to present them in job appications. Test your knowedge about what empoyers are ooking for by naming at east six transferabe 'soft' skis that are wanted by most empoyers. The skis isted on the Prospects website cover most of the popuar ones: Communication: The abiity to communicate oray, in writing or via eectronic means in a manner appropriate to the audience. 15 Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 7 FAQs Activity 8 Read the case study in Worksheet 4. Jack evauates his vountary experience and what action was taken, by using a STARE grid and action words (see aso Worksheet 5 in Section 6). Try competing the bank grid provided in Worksheet 4 using exampes of your own activities to demonstrate your skis and how you acquired them. The information in your STARE chart wi be invauabe for those situationa type questions that often crop up on appication forms, such as te us about a time when you worked in a team; describe what you were trying to achieve and what your roe was. 16 Using vountary work to get ahead in the job market 7 FAQs As a vounteer you are in contro of how much or how itte time you can spare. As you think about vounteering, be reaistic about how much time you can reguary commit to. Far better a weeky commitment of an hour or two that you can fit into your ife than trying to offer an unreaistic amount of time that you can t keep to. There are opportunities to match a eves of time commitment. Wi I need a poice background check and what does it invove? Discosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks (previousy CRB checks) in Engand and Waes or Discosure check in Scotand is usuay required for any roe where you wi be working with chidren or vunerabe aduts. In the Repubic of Ireand the process is known as Garda vetting; responsibiity for organising this ies with the organisation. What skis/experience do I need? This very much varies according to the kind of roe you are ooking for. You may be surprised to discover that many vounteering roes do not need any specific skis or experience enthusiasm and a wiingness to earn often count for much more. For some roes you wi require particuar skis or experience, but you probaby have more to offer than you may think. For exampe, if you have reasonabe iteracy or numeracy, then you can vounteer as a tutor for chidren or adut earners. Likewise a driving icence, cooking skis or parenting experience are a vauabe assets that you can bring to vounteering roes. However, in many cases organisations are simpy ooking for your time and goodwi, as we as a wiingness to muck in and get invoved. Often any training you need wi be provided on the job. See Section 3 of this unit. How do I find out about vountary opportunities? Your oca vounteer centre is a good pace to start.
