3 EVENT Date: 25 th May 2017 (Thursday) Venue: School of HBP, USM Time: 8.00am 6.15pm Theme: Institutionalizing Green Practices: Green for Growth Focus: Multiple aspects of green concept and technology including reducing energy consumption, recycling resources, environmental auditing, reducing waste generation, promoting actions to minimize pollution, sustainable construction (material and infra), conserving of energy, water and biodiversity
4 OVERVIEW BUSTEC2017 is congress in which undergraduate & postgraduate students majoring in BS and BT come forward with a conference paper and present their research findings in this specialized in-house congress. Students undergo no less than fifteen weeks (undergraduate) and not less than thirty weeks (postgraduate) of training in carrying out scientific research. BUSTEC2017 is the manifestation of the effort by not only the students but also their respective supervisors in order to ensure the training and supervision does not go to waste. The papers which will be presented in this BUSTEC2017 are published according to international and standardized format For most of the students this will be their first publication to be remembered long into their future.
5 OBJECTIVES To engage students & supervisors in a collaborative multidisciplinary research environment nurturing vital research skills in presentation, communication and dissemination To strengthen student research in a safe, supportive environment that will provide avenues for feedback to students on their research as well as boost confidence in ability to carry out rigorous research To assist students in enhancing their communication skills and to better understand how to prepare for careers in a global workforce.

7 PAPER FORMAT & EVALUATION Must strictly follow the paper template provided by the organizer Don t include any page number on the paper template All papers must be written in English and submitted electronically in PDF format to the Course Coordinator. Paper should be written minimum 7 pages and maximum 12 pages. All papers will be sent to external reviewers for assessment. Each paper will be evaluated by 2 reviewers
8 PAPER STRUCTURE Your article should normally consist of the following sections and should follow the Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion system: a title page with the title of the article, name(s) of author(s) and address(es) of establishment(s) where the work was carried out an abstract an introduction / a literature review a methods section / experimental program section a results section / analysis or results a discussion section a conclusion section an acknowledgments section (in any) a list of references
9 PAPER STRUCTURE (1) TITLE PAGE should be short, informative and meaningful to the whole readership of the article. avoid using long systemic names and non-standard abbreviations, acronyms or symbols. (2) ABSTRACT give readers concise information about the content of your article. Informative & accessible clearly state the objectives, methods, main results and conclusions drawn. no table numbers, figure numbers, references or equations Should not normally be more than 300 words.
10 PAPER STRUCTURE (3) INTRODUCTION concise and describe the nature of the problem under investigation and its background. set your work in the context of previous research citing relevant references. (4) METHODS provide sufficient details of the experiment, simulation, statistical test or analysis carried out to generate the results so that the method can be repeated by another researcher.
11 PAPER STRUCTURE (5) RESULTS discuss main findings and outcomes of your study. use tables and figures to improve to explain findings Tables and Figures should be numbered serially and referred to in the text by number (table 1, etc.). Each table and figure should have an explanatory caption (6) DISCUSSION discuss the significance of the results compare them with previous work using relevant references. (7) CONCLUSION highlight the novelty and significance of the work, and any plans for future relevant work.
12 REFERENCE LABELLING SYSTEMS You MUST use Vancouver numerical system References are numbered sequentially through the text. The numbers should be given in square brackets, e.g. [1], [4-7] etc., and one number can be used to refer to several instances of the same reference. The reference list at the end of the article then lists the references in numerical order, not alphabetically.
13 ORAL PRESENTATION Each student will be allocated 10 minutes for oral presentation and 10 minutes for Q&A session (total of 20 minutes) After 10 minutes the panel will stop your presentation. Therefore please ensure the slides can be covered within 10 minutes. It is suggested maximum of 18 slides per presentation
