In light of the persistent Math Achievement Gap in this country, this is a daunting challenge. This presentation describes how some US schools are using a computer based math curriculum and data-driven instruction to close the Math Achievement Gap. Instead of starting with a symbolic or algebraic representation, start with a table or graph and ask questions to assess their ability to analyze and solve problems using these representations. 3 HCTM/T3 Regional Conference Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 Page3 Middle,, Pre-Service Middle Grades, General Math Looking Inside Classrooms Connected with the TI-Navigator System The students in the classrooms of sixteen 7th grade teachers in Hawaii are connected and learning mathematics with the use of TI-Navigator and calculators. After 5 days of professional development in the summer as participants in Project FANC, the teachers are using TI-Navigator for formative assessment to provide feedback for both students and teachers. Participants will engage in activities 7th grade teachers are using in their classrooms while learning about the features of the TI-Navigator that can be used for formative assessment. Videos of students using TI-Navigator will be shared. Judy Olson 7th grade teachers from Project FANC University of Hawai'i Geometry Cabri Jr and TI-Navigator, Perfect together Participants will learn some Cabri Jr. basics and see how TI-Navigator can be used to enhance student performance and energize your geometry classroom. Fred Decovsky Teachers Teaching with Technology Algebra, Geometry Problem Solving that Supports Connections between Algebra and Geometry Extend and deepen key ideas in algebra such as variable and function through interesting problems that incorporate geometric visualization and modelling. Each problem will assume the use of an interactive technological environment such as the TI 84+ or the NSpire. Full Inclusion will be defined as the practice of having students receiving Special Education services and receiving instruction in the regular-education class, along with regular education students. Programs are printed using TI-Connect. Participants will learn how GPS handhelds work in a short outdoor activity. Using the GPS indoors, they will learn about the latitude, longitude coordinate system and discover how GPS handhelds are a valuable tool for measurement. Participants will engage in tasks from the project using the contexts of volume, mass, length and area to gain insights into mathematics concepts and student learning.
