3 About The Experiential Learning Forum The inaugural Experiential Learning Forum (ELF) 2010 organised by Republic Polytechnic s Office of Student and Graduate Affairs was a resounding success and received numerous positive feedback. Experiential Learning Forum 2012 aims to attract a bigger audience by offering a plethora of programmes and diverse perspectives by underscoring the critical role that experiential learning plays in holistic character education. Whilst ELF 2010 was a befitting inclusive term to focus on Adventure and Service-Learning separately in a twoday event, ELF 2012 will focus on integrating and fusing various experiential activities into holistic character development opportunities. ELF 2012 Synopsis: INFUSE! This year, we would like to INFUSE! and share effective strategies on how values can be best infused into art, sports, literature, mathematics, outdoor, adventure or service by engaging students physically, intellectually and emotionally. The forum aims to provide a platform for an exchange of ideas as well as a way to share and disseminate information on good practices within experiential learning. Republic Polytechnic is committed to promoting experiential learning amongst practitioners and the clients for such services in the education and social work sectors. We hope, through this forum to strengthen and broaden the network for all involved in experiential learning both locally as well as regionally. We see this as a great opportunity for us to come together as a professional learning community for experiential learning to leverage on our areas of interest and/or expertise for the active learning of our students. We look forward to welcoming you to ELF 2012 and actively collaborate to build communities and transform learning in the values-driven, student-centric education sector. This Forum would be in the form of meaningful sessions and hands-on activities to enhance the quality and impact of projects that they design for youth development. The workshops would cover aspects such as effective reflection, programme design, cultural diversity, and the perspective of VWOs in S-L. The Forum is also a capacity development opportunity teachers can understand better the needs of the beneficiaries and how best to meet them through Values-in-Action (VIA) projects and Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) programmes. VWOs get to understand the learning needs of students and how to work more effectively with schools which are interested in offering Service-Learning and/or Adventure Learning opportunities for their students. On Day 1 finale, RP student organisers will be presenting their Service-Learning project in the form of an experiential tea break session, Dining in the Dark. Up to 100 forum participants would be invited to dine together, and this event would ultimately serve to raise awareness of what the visually challenged go through on a daily basis, and give participants a chance to experience an actual Service-Learning project in progress. Staff from the School of Engineering (SEG) and School of Hospitality (SOH) will also be showcasing their instructional designs in their classroom teachings to RP students in the form of a highly engaging and interesting The Art of Toy Adaptation and Dining Etiquettes at RP s very own Oliva Restaurant respectively. On Day 2 finale, up to 100 ELF participants will be invited to Republic Polytechnic Experiential Adventure Learning Technology Development Centre (REAL TDC) Outreach Dinner This outreach event seeks to bring together like- minded educators, outdoor practitioners and academics in the areas of outdoor and experiential learning to hear from keynote speaker, Dr. Brian Wattchow of Monash University as well as to learn about research findings by staff members of the Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning (DOAL). There will also be a showcase of the final year projects done by Republic Polytechnic s DOAL students. 3

8 Day 1: Keynote Speaker Dr. Brian Wattchow Senior Lecturer Faculty of Education, Monash University Dr. Brian Wattchow is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of Sport and Outdoor Recreation (SOR) in the Faculty of Education, Monash University. Brian has published more than 30 articles in academic journals and scholarly books, most often centering on his interests in outdoor education, sense of place and land identity. He co-authored Group Management in the Wilderness (University of Calgary, 1989) with Bill March and has recently published his first collection of poetry titled The Song of the Wounded River (Ginninderra Press, 2010), an account of a 2,500 canoe journey down the River Murray in Australia. Brian's passion in outdoor education involves introducing people to country, providing rich educative experiences that help them to realise that the outdoors is a place full of personal, cultural and ecological significance. Away from work Brian is an avid golfer and reader, and enjoys camping, travelling and toiling under the hot Australian sun on the small Gippsland farmlet where he lives with his family. Keynote Presentation: Experiential Learning and Place-responsiveness. It has been said that places, and how we relate to them, are worthy of our attention because places are powerfully pedagogical (Gruenewald and Smith, 2008, p. 143). This presentation brings together two big ideas that have transformed how we think about education and learning: experiential pedagogies and place-responsiveness. A brief history of experiential learning and the concept of place and place-based education will be followed by a provocative analysis of how these approaches might best be used so that young people are better prepared for the challenges of the 21 st Century. A contemporary, localised and nuanced approach to experiential learning and place-responsiveness has the potential to infuse value into all areas of the curriculum and the learning experience. 8

9 Day 2: Keynote Speaker Dr. Teo-Koh Sock Miang Associate Professor National Institute of Education Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Intro Former Vice-Dean/School of Physical Education, Associate Dean/Physical Education Programmes and Head/Physical Education & Sports Science Council Member, Singapore Sports Council President, Special Olympics Singapore Chair, Special Olympics Asia Pacific Leadership Council Achievements Public Service Medal (PBM), 2008 Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (Singapore Foundation) Education Award, 1966 Friend of Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports (MCYS) Award, 2012 Women s Weekly Great Women of Our Times Award for Health, Sports & Wellness, 2012 Passion Facilitating and promoting physical activity, recreation and sports for children and for individuals with disabilities Keynote Presentation: Learning by Doing..the Experiential Learning Process Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. ~ Benjamin Franklin In March 2010, the Singapore Ministry of Education articulated clearly that Singapore students must be equipped with 21 st century competencies in order to flourish and thrive in a fast changing and globalised world (MOE, 9 March 2010). Institutions and educators have to tackle the challenge of designing learning to achieve the desired outcomes of nurturing and producing 21 st century ready learners. One of the key challenges facing educators is what are alternative or appropriate educational pedagogies to achieve these outcomes of producing learners who are confident, a self-directed learner who questions, reflects, perseveres and takes responsibility for his own learning, an active contributor, and a concerned citizen. This presentation highlights the elements proposed by Kraft and Sakofs (1985) as being inherent in the experiential learning process and suggests practical implications and considerations when using experiential learning as an alternative pedagogy for facilitating learning and development of 21 st century competencies. 9

10 Facilitators & Their Workshop Synopsis Day 1 AM Mr Ong Chee Hau, Roch Founder & Director ZingO Festival Drum Group Roch Ong Chee Hau is one of the pioneer drummers of the world s 1 st 24 Festive Drum Group founded in year He started working as a free-lance part-time coach in 1998 in Singapore, and he has remained active in the drumming scene up-to-date. He founded ZingO in 2004, and has started a full-time career with big Chinese drums (Festival Drum). With the mantra Dream Big Drum Loud and the motto Passion Teamwork Commitment, he and ZingO have served Singapore and the region with great passion and performance. Almost all the Festival Drum Group in Singapore (some were called Seasons Drums, Big Chinese Drums, 24 Drums etc) are related to him in a way or another. The main pillars of ZingO s activities are : Music (Drums, Sounds and Effects), Chinese Culture (Festivals, Values and Activities) and Education (Medium to Shape and Change Lives). Focusing on providing values onto the stake holders, ZingO drives the big drums activities as a youth movement : to nurture the next better drummers, the next better drum lovers; and the next better learners. People Awaken from Hibernations is what the name ZingO says. Working with people, especially the youths through big chinese drums is Roch s passion. Apart from the apparent and tangible results and skills that the big Chinese drums can bring, Roch has more heart for the hidden and intangible but important areas that the activities can nurture. Started off as a drummer in the early 90s, but eventually ventured into becoming an instructor ; and currently the founder and manager of ZingO, Roch has quite some stories to share. The stories are based on real experience. Roch has coached over thousands of students ; the youngest being 6 years old, while the oldest 56 years old. On a side note, Roch has a rather unique life experience. He holds a bachelor degree in Science (NUS), 2 master degrees in Business (NUS and Peking University), and he has practical working experiences in the performing arts scene. At 17 years old, he was offered an ITE and Vocational Training by MOE (after his O-level). At 18 years old he was successfully awarded admission by NUS. Dream Big Drum Loud One of the Practical Approaches to Experiential Learning How does big Chinese drums activity help making its participant a more positive learner? How not to accidentally convert an active learner into passive learner? Is there a conflict between being creative and at the same time being disciplined? How to train the ears, the eyes and the mind for better learning? How to build teamwork through drumming fun? How to stay LOUD while not NOISY? How to overcome setbacks? Almost all learning workshops talk about staying active and being positive, this is the one sharing from real experience. Experience yourself why some consider ZingO Festival Drumming as an exercise, why some consider it as a Dance, while no doubt it is music but why is it different from an orchestral percussion? And how to channel these into a more general learning behaviour? How the method can be incorporated here? How can traditional ideas co-exist with innovative ideas? Workshop to cover 1. Active Learners vs. Passive Learners 2. Lighthouse vs. Big Ships 3. View from Audience Perspective 4. Teamwork, Synchronizations and Winning 5. Drummers Listen More Method 7. Self Motivation Set a Dream 8. Overcoming Setbacks At the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to perform a short festival drumming piece designed to incorporate teamwork, synchronization and body expression. The participants will also get to understand why ZingO method of drumming is such a fun tool to help them keep fit, develop their psychomotor, and become attentive to learning activities. 1 st November AM: 10.15am 12.15pm Student Lounge 10

13 Mr Abdul Shukor Bin Ramli Director Explora Pte Ltd Abdul Shukor Ramli is a youth consultant and currently involved in several roles in youth development and social work. He is an associate consultant and trainer with Adventure Safety International, lectures in National Council for Social Services, and is an adjunct academic at Raffles Institution (Junior College). He started his outdoor career serving the community centre as vice-chairman of an adventure club, then, his national service in the Police Boys Club, a division of the Singapore Police Force. His work involved organising vocational programmes for street kids, after-care for youths and youth-at-risk. He then spent 17 years at Outward Bound Singapore as a Senior Specialist Instructor. In , he was at the then Raffles Junior College as Senior Experiential Learning Educator developing student development programmes. He aims to start a Shelter for Boys and devote his life to working with youths-in-need. He was involved in the social work industry for eight years before deciding to focus on youth development. Shukor has developed special needs programmes like Perfect Star for Singapore Prisons Service, Cross-Trained Youths for MENDAKI, IamINtHERE for MENDAKI, SHeRPA MCYS Boys and Girls Homes, Outdoor Breakthrough Programme for PERTAPIS and ACTion for MCYS Aftercare Division. He also developed customized team building and leadership programmes for companies and government agencies such as Singapore Police Force, Singapore Civil Defence Force and Republic of Singapore Air Force. In 2010, he was engaged by Assumption Pathway School to develop a residential programme for the students-in-needs. He is proud that, in the space of two months, he developed a home that most students had never previously experienced, filled with structured educational and developmental activities. His passion is spending his off-days and weekends instructing budding kayakers at Sembawang Water Venture Club. His other joy is drumming with the community in Kallang CC. Occassionally, he finds time to jam in music studio with his cousins and uncles. A self-avowed family man, he regularly takes his wife and two young daughters to the family beach house in Malacca, where they go back to their kampong roots while enjoying the fresh sea air. He enjoys cooking over a charcoal fire, such as Laksa, Sop Tulang and Mee Soto, together with family and friends. Dapur Arang - Outdoor Cooking Charcoal Brazier Tinned and canned food, all ready to be heated and to be eaten are getting a lot in varieties. So are the instant meals and even beverages; 2 in 1, 3 in 1 and 5 in 1.This is progress and is good, a camp or expedition can then spend the time on its aimed objectives. However, in youth development, character building and expeditionary programmes, some activities were taken for granted and at times totally thrown away. Such as getting instant noodles over solid fuel, in 15 minutes, so that we can spend time queuing for High Ropes Course instead. What if cooking becomes an illegitimate objective of the camp? What if cooking becomes a form of therapeutic activity? Real food preparation, real fire, real cooking, real food...sharing of isomorphic transfers and moments with youths, counselling, chatting, rapport building and mentoring. 1 st November AM: 10.15am 12.15pm Sports Complex Level 1 13

14 Mr David Lim Chee Wai Founder/Director Incredible Journeys Pte Ltd Intro David has been extensively involved in the training and development industry for the past decade. He has designed and facilitated customized programmes for training all levels of the business community. David believes in learning through experience and has an uncanny ability to facilitate this process in the participants. Achievements David s love for the outdoors has taken him on many journeys and one of his most memorable journeys is on the 1st Singapore Antarctica Expedition in 2000 where he joined other like-minded individuals on an arduous ski to the South Pole. An avid adventurer, he enjoys the challenge of scaling mountainous summits and is also a biker who has taken many road trips. In time to come, he wishes to marry both hobbies with a road trip to a place where he can also climb one of its 8,000m mountains. Passion David believes that the outdoors is the greatest classroom for self-discovery. He recognises that there is a gem in every youth and that is why the roles of facilitation and adventure programming are able to bring out the shine in that gem. Let the Mountain Speak for Itself! REAL (Realistic Environment for Active Learning) Many outdoor leaders would like to bring groups to the great outdoor and facilitate their learning through reflection and debriefing. Just how optimal is the experience and retention of the learning? Incredible Journeys (IJ) training philosophy is developed in between the institutional and absolute adventure quadrant, the REAL adventure. IJ believes that through a REAL (Realistic Environment for Active Learning) adventure, participants are able to internalize learning in an actual expedition like mountaineering, high altitude trekking, white water and sea kayaking. Participants exposed to real risks and consequences can be drastic if certain conditions are not properly managed. For example, hypothermia can be prevented if participants were taught proper layering system and winter environmental factors. The environment really plays the greater part in the teachable moment. Hence, the mountain speaks for itself. Deliverables: - Revisit optimal arousal theory in REAL adventure. - The relevance of Kurt Hahn s philosophy in REAL adventure. - What is REAL adventure? - Principles of REAL adventures - Considerations to REAL adventures versus institutional - How much risks to trim/manage in order to reach to an acceptable level? - Application and planning for REAL adventure for schools/corporate. 1 st November AM: 10.15am 12.15pm Blk E3 Lvl 6 E3 6E/F 14

15 Mr Lin Xiuxing GROW Executive Spastic Children s Association of Singapore Intro Joined SCAS in Feb 2012 as GROW Executive, currently heading the adult services in the Association, overseeing the Sheltered Workshop, Social Enterprise and Day Activity Centre. Passion My passion for serving in the social service sector was ignited when I started volunteering in another VWO, Very Special Arts, prior to my National Service Enlistment. Back then, my responsibilities involved teaching trainees with disabilities art and craft. Through that experience, I strongly believe that people with disability can lead an independent live with dignity and respect given the right training and skill set. Where possible, trainees should be guided and not assisted every step of the way. This will help trainees build greater self reliance and confidence. Weaving Confidence, Building Self-expression into Sands Art Starting out on in the Art and Craft Workshop was never easy to begin with, besides acquiring new skill for the project; trainees had to overcome their physical limitation. Through this workshop, we hope to share with others our experience in starting out the Sand Art project, the positive impact it had on our trainees, and the procedures involved in creating your very own sand art pieces. A 2hr Workshop where participants can gain insights on working with trainees with disabilities and skills necessary to conduct their own Art and Craft classes. 1 st November AM: 10.15am 12.15pm RPC Lvl 2 CET Rm 5 15

Signposts for a Place-responsive Approach to Teaching, Learning and Service In this session we will look at how a place-responsive approach to teaching, learning and service is likely to evolve over time, through repeated efforts that take into account the nuanced and localized context(s) of the educator, learners and their community. A place-responsive approach involves a change in priorities and expectations. Short term learning objectives and some traditional views of learners, the learning process and simplistic ideas about the places where they learn, will need to be replaced with a different kind of work. In this session we will look in detail at four signposts for place responsive programming. These might best be thought of as design principles in crafting place-responsive learning experiences. Participants in the workshop will discuss and explore these four signposts and discuss how they might be implemented in a place-responsive program that is inspired by and draws upon local ideas, knowledge and expertise. 1 st November AM: 10.15am 12.15pm RPC Lvl 2 CET Rm 1 17

20 Facilitators & Their Workshop Synopsis Day 1 PM Mr Ang Wee Tong, Wilson Deputy Director Ngee Ann Polytechnic Wilson Ang is the Deputy Director of Ngee Ann Polytechnic Student Development and Alumni Office. He has been in the Service-Learning sector since 2001, and is one of the founding members of the Republic Polytechnic Tan Ean Kiam Service- Learning Resource Centre. He has co-presented workshops at the National Youth Leadership Conference (USA) and the National Institute of Education (NIE) Service-Learning Conference (Singapore). He started his Service-Learning experience in 2001 by leading a marine conservation project to Cambodia under the Singapore International Foundation (YEP). He has since worked with and trained numerous secondary and polytechnic Service-Learning project groups locally and overseas. His passion resides in designing meaningful Service-Learning programmes and designing Service-Learning frameworks for secondary schools and tertiary institutions. "A large part of my Service-Learning experience stems from spending time working with youths years of age, in trying to encourage them to make critical comparison between what they perceive (feel) is/are happening versus what is reality (currently happening) around them. By making critical comparison, they are then able to make a forward/backward connection between what they do and how they enjoy or suffer in the consequence". Jack-in-the-box The Jack-in-the-box toy is a simple one, but it brings delight to all that wind it up and jump when it comes popping out at you. Even though we expect it, we always jump. Add the laughter of a baby at seeing jack-in-the-box jump out and all are having a great laugh. However, we don't see them as often today as we used to, but they are still out there. Service-Learning experience is akin to the jack in the box feeling, we don t get to see it daily the ah-ha moment but it s out there. How do we capture it? That was my a-ha moment. The moment I realized who I had become who I had changed myself back into how hard I had worked and what I had lost in the process. I was now someone strong and capable, physically and mentally fit. (Ryan, H.M, 2003) Participant in this workshop will get a chance to look at the different ah ha moments during their Service projects and how these moment manifest into greater awareness of one s self and of others. This session will be interactive and will use pictures, drawing and other interactive tools to allow participants to share ideas and best practices with one another, and at the same time take away key concepts of reflection and facilitation techniques. 1 st November PM: 1.30pm 4.30pm Blk E3 Lvl 6 E3 6P/N 20

21 Ms Lisa Ong Education Officer Singapore Sports School Intro Siok Cheng was born and raised in Singapore. A big part of her childhood was spent learning to adapt to the effects of childhood poliomyelitis. She has a B.A. in English from the National University of Singapore and a Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education. Achievements Since 1987 she has been promoting the love for language and literature through drama, speech, music, dance, art and even food. Experiencing language and literature through such activities engages the imagination and builds confidence in youth. Competence in language and literature can then be harnessed to serve larger and higher purposes. Observing that youth empowerment comes from service beyond self interests, she has also incorporated cross-cultural understanding and humane education in her language teaching. She has initiated sustainable activities and projects that enable students of diverse backgrounds and abilities to contribute to the well being of both humans and animals. Passion For the past few years she has been conducting her own personal service learning trips. These trips can take the form of responding to a local animal in distress to coordinating donations and delivery of veterinary supplies to people helping street dogs and working animals in Nepal or North Africa. She is particularly inspired and humbled by the children and young people she has encountered in the course of her work. Whether it is her own sports school student who turns up faithfully to feed the community cats or the Arab youth who waited with a puppy in the winter morning to see the veterinarian, they have shown that kindness is a language everybody understands. She is grateful for the support and honest feedback of loved ones, friends, colleagues and students. They have gamely gone along with her experiments and that has made all the difference. Language and Literature for Good Cultivating empathy thru language With the emergence of a variety of educational pathways, we need more than good grades and marks to keep our youth engaged and learning. 22 Ms Caroline Lee Education Officer Singapore Sports School Intro Caroline is an MOE Teaching Scholar. She majors in English Language and English Literature in the National University of Singapore and has a Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education. She was the Subject Head and Covering HOD for the English Language Department in Singapore Sports School from She has since stepped down to do what she enjoys most being a classroom teacher and reaching out to students. Achievements Caroline is privileged to be able to create some customized special projects for her students which she deems as her biggest achievements as an Educator. One of these would include a class project she designed for her Secondary 2 Normal Academic class last year which she named Responding to a country in crisis. She wanted her students to be more aware and empathetic towards the difficult times Japan was going through when she was hit by the Earthquake and Tsunami. She created a booklet of related learning materials and activities for the students and devoted almost 10 weeks on this special project. The project culminated with the students sharing their knowledge with other classes. This Secondary 2 class also went on to write letters to encourage school children in Japan. They also folded 1000 cranes for their Japanese counterparts as it is believed that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane such as recovery from illnesses or setbacks. They concluded the whole project by making a trip down to the Embassy of Japan and presenting their gifts to them. Caroline has created other special projects such as Einstein the parrot for her Secondary 3 Normal Technical students where she encourages the students to be more compassionate and respectful towards all other living creatures. She also co-faciliated other special projects with her colleague Lisa such as The Velveteen Rabbit project, SSP Shakespeare Festival and the Spelling Bee Competition. Passion She picked up scrapbooking in 2004 and photography in 2005 and sees them as powerful tools as an Educator. She believes that photographs coupled with a tactile feel can reach out to a wider audience instead of plain dull text. As a mentor, she loves to make personalized artwork such as scrap pages for the mentees. She also enjoys creating customized booklets and teaching materials for her students. Caroline is a strong believer of the multiplier effect. She enjoys documenting meaningful activities so that others can use them to create even better lessons. Caroline is humbled and blessed to have met many big-hearted people in her life who have inspired her to be a more compassionate human being. It is this very value that she wishes to pass on to her students. This is great for analysis, fact finding, and developing plans. Visual thinking is a communication and facilitation tool which will help you and your audience to better express and get ideas in a variety of business or communication settings. It helps groups to clarify complex information, reach consensus, boost engagement, participation and ownership of their ideas through a structured and whole brained approach to communication. Using and creating visuals also satisfies the brains innate desire to create meaning using pictures, thus increasing learning, creativity, and aha moments. While our world grows in complexity, students attention spans are ever decreasing, and and competition for their attention is staggering. As teacher and trainers, our job is to captivate attention and create an environment of engagement and inspiration. In this dynamic and interactive one day program, we will introduce you to a variety of visual thinking tools and their applications in the classroom and workplace. IT Connects You & Me! When we talk about the need of the community, we often refer to the physical or infrastructural needs, such as food/water or house and other facilities. However, these may not be the best match for our students who participate in Service-Learning or Community Engagement Projects with a focus on these aspects. It s hard for them to connect to what they have learned in the classroom with those needs of the community. From the community perspective, a more sustainable model is preferred as well as to address a deeper need for a general or specific education. In the workshop, the facilitator will reflect on his experience over the years in promoting IT-related educational servicelearning practices. Discussion will be focused on how to tide up the service- learning activities design together with curriculum content of the participating students. Workshop participants are encouraged to reflect and identify the areas and formulate the strategies on how their students/clients would be able to contribute back to the community when utilizing their academic advantage in creating a more sustainable impact to the community through educational service-learning or community projects. 2 nd November PM: 2.45pm 4.45pm RPC Lvl 2 CET Rm 5 40

2 nd November PM: 2.45pm 4.45pm RPC Lvl 2 CET Rm 1 43

WRS is an active player in wildlife conservation and has supported many conservation projects both locally and overseas. When it comes to conservation of native wildlife, it has been our goal to promote appreciation of wildlife and instill a sense of ownership amongst locals to conserve our environment. To enhance nature conservation efforts, we partner Ministry of Education to develop programmes that complement the mainstream curriculum. This workshop highlights how the rich resources at Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park and Night Safari can be used to plan learning journeys that nurture multiple intelligences for the little ones and adults alike. With over 10,000 animals and 1.5million trees and shrubs in natural settings, the three attractions offer boundless possibilities for students to learn, experience, create, share, interact and reflect.
