4 ENERGIZER Learning Target As a litterateur, I can utilize active reading strategies to support my reading comprehension and I can explain the expectations of the first Embedded Assessment (EA) of the year. HW: None Energizer: 1. What do good readers do when they are reading? To answer this question, you can make a list, respond in a paragraph, create a web or create a cluster 2. Why do you think it s important to know the requirements and expectations of the first assessment prior to starting the reading for the first unit?

5 T2T Using active reading strategies to support comprehension

6 Identifying Quality: T2Ts from last year Sort your examples into two piles: - First pile: you think the T2T is a good example of active reading - Second pile: the post-it is a bad example of active reading. - Be thinking about why you are sorting each post-it into the good or bad category.

7 Reflective Questions Based on your sorting of the good T2T examples and the bad T2T examples, discuss your sorting with your table partner: 1. What made you decide that certain T2Ts were good? 2. What made you decide that certain T2Ts were bad? 3. What do you think the consequences were for the reader who produced the good T2Ts? 4. What do you think the consequences were for the reader who produced the bad T2Ts?

8 But what types of T2Ts are there? In your pile of T2Ts, try and identify what type of T2T is on the post it. Your choices are: mark/highlight, question, clarify, visualize, predict, react & connect Put your T2Ts into separate piles based on your identification. Do your best there is no right answer.

9 Putting it Together Based on your observations and general knowledge, how would you describe the qualities of each type of T2T? (Mark/Highlight, Question, Clarify, Visualize, Predict, React/Connect)

10 What is T2T? Active readers mark up texts in many different ways Each reader marks up a text a little differently Depending on what is best for him or her Experienced readers know what works for them Think of it as talking to text (T2T) Try to respond in any of these six general ways: 1. Mark or highlight 4. Visualize 2. Question 5. Predict 3. Clarify 6. React and connect

MARK OR HIGHLIGHT With a pen or highlighter Underline or circle words that are important or seem confusing Underline or circle words or parts that connect to the greater reading purpose By marking up a text you Identify important parts Make these parts easier to find when you come back to reread or review *Note: Good readers don t just mark or highlight.

12 2. QUESTION Ask questions of the text What is the author talking about this? What is the significance of? Why did the character do/say? Ask yourself questions as you read Do I believe this? Is this true? So what? This is a way of talking with the author It triggers thoughts in your mind It also makes your reading more meaningful

13 3. CLARIFY Good readers are always trying to make what they have read clear to themselves By asking questions like What has the author been trying to say? What did s/he mean? By numbering or labeling parts of the text To keep track of points or events To make connections from one page to another

14 4. VISUALIZE What do you see when you read? What images come to mind? To help remember these mental pictures, draw what you see Draw a picture/make a sketch Draw a scene or conversation Almost any way of visualizing is useful

15 5. PREDICT Another way of responding to literature is to guess what will happen next How will this story come out in the end? Readers naturally make predictions as they read Guessing what will come next helps you You follow the story or article more closely Get more from what you are reading You are more invested in the story when you predict

REACT AND CONNECT Get more out of your reading by stating your own views by recording them in the margins as you read Types of connections you might make Text-to-self Text-to-world Text-to-text Use the margins to Express your opinions Jot down notes Make comments *Note: Good readers do more than just write whoa and yeah etc.

17 Second Half Second Half of Today s Learning Target: By the end of today, you should be able to explain the expectations of the first Embedded Assessment. Read through the EA 1 prompt on your halfsheet. You have two goals: be able to comprehend the prompt and to use all 6 types of T2Ts at least once (mark/highlight, question, clarify, visualize, predict, react/connect.)

Try to use a mixture of your own words and words from the prompt. o What aspects of EA 1 do you feel confident in? What parts of the EA make you nervous?
