1 Name: NATIVE AMERICAN TIME CAPSULE To prepare for our study of American history, we need to learn about the cultures that existed here before the arrival of the Europeans. For this project, we will pretend that a Native American culture wants to be remembered by future generations, and they place some important elements of their culture into a time capsule. Step One: Choosing teammates. The students will be broken up into teams.. Step Two: Choosing Topics Teams will consider options for Native Americans to choose from on the list attached. Teams will be picked randomly to select their culture. Step Three: Researching the Nation Both students will research information on their topic. Students may need to meet at home or contact each other via social networking to complete their work. Things to find are the following: Location: Where did they live? Were they concentrated in one area or scattered around? Were they nomadic? How did their location benefit them? Do they live in the same place as they did in the past? Government structure How were decisions reached? Was there one leader or many of them? Who were some of their most famous and why? Trade and economy What did they make? What did they trade? How did their environment influence their economy? Family Life/Social Structure What roles did men, women, and children have? What was their religion? What activities did they consider important. Contributions What are they most famous for? How did they contribute to civilization? The answers to these questions will be completed on the sheet attached. This will be turned in as a homework assignment and graded. Part Four: Creating the Time Capsule and Paper Each team member is responsible for one of the following items. They will be graded individually and as a group on their work.

2 Team Member #1 Visual The team member will create a visual of 4 artifacts that would be placed in the time capsule. The artifacts can be displayed in the following ways: A picture of the artifact An actual replica of the artifact A created version of the artifact (ex. a picture found on Google) (ex. an actual bow and arrow) (ex: a drawing of a peace pipe) Any combination can be used to display these artifacts. They can be placed on construction paper, a cardboard display, or in a box. Team Member #2 Writing portion This team member is responsible for writing a paper which summarizes the culture and the purpose and significance of each of the four artifacts placed in the time capsule. Writing can be placed on the visual for display, but a paper must be submitted. It will be typed, double spaced, and follow the format attached. All writing must be in your own words!! The paper must include a reference page in MLA format, listing the books, Internet sources, other references, and pictures from Google Images or another source. A discussion of this format will come shortly. Step Five: Presentation The team will be asked to display their time capsule and summarize their findings. This may be done either during class periods or during a period where all of the students can display their work at the same time. Note: It is important that students meet appropriate deadlines. Failure to meet deadlines will result in deductions from the overall grade. Each team will receive a group grade and individual grade for their work. Possible Topics Below is a list of Native American cultures listed by region. Teams will select one and then find information on that culture. If a team finds it difficult to find resources, they must notify me immediately and select another culture to research.
