1 INSTRUCTOR: Joan Harnish COURSE PREREQUISITES: None REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Microsoft Project 2013 ISBN: Paperback or e-book Author: Microsoft Official Academic Course SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Computer Information Systems Department CIS224 Project Management Microsoft Project for Windows Fall 2014 Section COURSE DESCRIPTION Introduction to project management concepts while working with MS Project to solve complex project management networks, including creating Gantt and PERT charts, tracking project progress, planning for restrictions, and integrating MS Project with other software packages such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and cc Mail. This course uses Microsoft Project SCC provides access to it via the MySCC remote access system located at COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Explain project management techniques and describe their usefulness. (I) 2. Demonstrate the creation of a network project using MS Project for Windows. (II) 3. Plan a detailed project, including subtasks and milestones. (III) 4. Create custom calendars and assign resources to tasks. (IV) 5. Use online help functions. (V) 6. Filter project data and create appropriate views and reports of such data. (VI) 7. Plan for restrictions, including adding lag time and lead time and resolving resource conflicts. (VII) 8. Apply task constraints and create custom views in various windows. (VIII) 9. Finalize the project schedule and track and adjust the project's progress. (IX) 10. Integrate MS Project with Excel and other MS office applications, such as cc Mail, MS Word, Access, and PowerPoint. (X) 11. Create appropriate written and/or oral reports detailing results obtained. (XI) 12. Create a project in a student team, consistent with existing TQM practices. 2 GENERAL INFORMATION Although there are no prerequisites for this course, because you are taking this course in an online format, it is required that you have: Regular access to a computer. A connection to the Internet and a web browser. Knowledge of basic computer skills including: saving files, uploading files, and sending and retrieving messages. Although these suggestions are not a requirement to take this class, generally those who are lacking in these skills have a difficult time completing the assignments for this class. All information for this course is contained in the Canvas Learning Management System and all assignments must be submitted via the assignment links in Canvas. You should expect to spend 6 to 8 hours per week to successfully complete all of the objectives for this class. Do no wait until the last minute to submit assignments. It may take longer than you expected to finish an assignment or you may experience technical issues that prevent you from submitting your assignment on time. Prepare a backup plan before a disaster happens; make arrangements to have an alternate method of internet access before you need it. COMMUNICATION Communication between us is important to the success of this class. Most communication from me will be in the Canvas class announcements and Canvas Communications as well as comments on your assignments. There may, however, be times when I need to send you a personal notification and I will use your Maricopa student for those instances. If you have provided the school with a personal address then you may receive s at both addresses. You may use either Canvas Communications or my SCC address to communicate with me. My address is at the top of this syllabus. I will respond within 24 hours with the possible exception of weekends. GRADING POLICY The assignments for this course are comprised of Homework Projects, Discussion Board Questions, short papers, and a comprehensive Capstone Project. All course work must be submitted by the published due date. Please refer to the Due Date on the Syllabus link so that you can plan your time efficiently. It is required that you submit your assignments by their published due date. The following penalties will apply to late assignments: Late assignments are subject to a 10% per day late penalty and no assignment will be accepted later than one week after the due date. Participation in regular class Discussion Boards is required and postings are subject to a 10% per day late penalty. Up to 10 points can be earned for the initial post and up to 10 points for responding to at least one other student s posting. Failure to cite sources used on written assignments and discussion boards will result in a grade penalty of 15% for written assignments and 5 points for discussion boards. The Capstone Project must be submitted on or before the due date and will receive ZERO points if submitted late. Page 2 of 5

3 If you have questions or difficulties with an assignment, please me as soon as possible. It may be helpful to attach a copy of your file. Do not ask a question with an uploaded unfinished assignment. Uploaded files are only viewed when they are graded, which is after the assignment s due date! The following is a breakdown of the possible points for the class (subject to change): Assignments 840 Discussions 130 Final Project 150 Total 1020 Final grades will be based on the schedule below. GRADE Points % A >= 918 >= 90 B C D F <= 611 <= 59 ATTENDANCE Since this is an online class, attendance is measured by student activity. Failure to regularly submit assignments in a timely manner may be interpreted as excessive absences. Scottsdale Community College policy allows instructors to withdraw students who are not participating and making progress. A student may be withdrawn from the class when assignments have not been submitted for two or more consecutive weeks. Please me if you experience any special circumstances which may affect your attendance. PARTICIPATION Participation in this course is required and will affect your grade. This is not a self-paced class. You are required to submit assignments on or before their due dates. You must also participate in regular online discussions in a meaningful, substantial and relevant manner. You shall post your own response to discussion board topics by the due date and then respond to at least one other student s posting by the response due date. All responses must be in your own words, not copied word for word from the textbook or other source. Each student should respond to the original discussion topic and should read the discussion threads to respond and pose other questions to students in the class. The more you participate equates to how much you gain from the discussions. Meaningful, substantial and relevant participation is at the discretion of the instructor and is defined as providing thoughtful, comprehensive responses to all parts of the topic with explanations and rationale to back them up. When responding to other students posts, don t just reply with I agree or That is a good point, doing that is important. You will not receive full participation credit without providing a comprehensive rationale to your post. Use proper grammar and spell check your work. Try to avoid the use of shorthand or slang in your postings. If you choose to use slang, please define the slang terms so that everyone understands what you are communicating. To avoid losing your work due to internet interruptions or session timeouts, it is suggested that you compose your posts offline then paste your content into the discussion board. Page 3 of 5

4 Please use the General Questions discussion to post general questions that may or may not be related to the class. You are encouraged you to use this first before ing me with a question. This board is checked daily and answers can be provided there for everyone s benefit. Be mindful that a person s post is their opinion and others may disagree with that opinion. Please treat others with respect and stick to the topic; personal attacks, insensitive remarks, or inappropriate language will not be tolerated. The first violation of this policy will result in a 10% grade penalty. Further violations may result in disciplinary actions up to and including college expulsion. SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS All assignments should be submitted in the appropriate application (Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Always proofread, grammar check and spell check all assignments before submitting them; failure to do so could result in a lower grade. Name your file according to the instructions in the assignment and please include your first and last name somewhere in your file name. All assignments must be submitted through the Canvas assignment link. Read the assignment instructions carefully to ensure you submit the correct material. Make sure you submit the correct attachment for each assignment; an incorrect file will not be graded and will receive zero points. Canvas will allow multiple submissions for an assignment. I will not grade assignments before the due date and I will only grade the last one submitted. I will not grade additional submissions after the due date. I will not accept requests to grade any assignment other than the last one submitted prior to the due date. Depending on the complexity of assignments and the number of assignments due each week, I will grade all assignments within two weeks of submission; most will be graded within one week. STUDENT MISCONDUCT POLICY The classroom is an educational learning environment where students are expected to engage in behaviors which are conducive to their own learning and the learning of their peers. To facilitate this, respect for self and others is mandatory and necessary. Should a student exhibit disruptive behavior and/or use profane language to the extent that it interferes with the learning environment, an academic consequence may be imposed. Any student found by a faculty member to have committed academic misconduct may be subject to the following academic consequences: Warning A notice in writing to the student that the student has violated the academic code. Grade Adjustment Lowering of a score on a test or assignment. Discretionary Sanctions Additional academic assignments determined by the faculty member. Course Failure Failure of a student from a course where academic misconduct occurs. Further information can be found on page 278 in the SCC Student Handbook, Academic Misconduct AR ACADEMIC HONESTY Every student in this class is expected to produce his/her own original work. Plagiarism is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. The first instance of plagiarism will result in a written notice to the student and a 15 percent reduction in the grade for the assignment The second instance of plagiarism will result in a grade of ZERO for the assignment Further instances of plagiarism will result in being dropped from the course with a failing grade. 5 WITHDRAWAL PROCESS IMPORTANT: You must submit a minimum of one assignment within 1 week after the class start date. If you do not do so, you will be withdrawn from the course. If you start the class and then decide it is not what you expected you must do one of the following: Go to campus and drop the course if it is still in the drop/add period Go to campus and withdraw from the course me and request a withdrawal If you start work in the class and do not finish, you will receive a failing grade unless you have completed one of the aforementioned options. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Sexual harassment is any unwelcome, verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it alters working conditions and creates a hostile environment or reasonably interferes with, limits, or deprives a student of the ability to participate in or benefit from any educational program or activity.
