Web site: Prerequisite Course Goals SLO (Learning Outcomes) Topics Textbook Satisfactory completion of Math 105 (Basic Mathematics) or acceptable level of skill as demonstrated in the mathematics placement process. By the end of this course, students will, through reading, exercises, discussions, quizzes, and exams: Fully utilize the knowledge of integers and apply the knowledge to the real world. Understand the basic concepts of areas, perimeter, and volume. Be able to apply the concepts of Fractions and Decimals. Simplify algebraic expressions; Use the addition and multiplication properties. Solve Equations containing Integers, Fractions, and Decimals. Students will be able to solve simple first degree equations involving fractions and decimals. Topics are approximately chapters 1-9 of the required textbook, which include: Integers, Operations on polynomials, and rational numbers; Introduction to geometric figures: perimeter, area, and volume; Solving Equations in one variable; Fractions, Decimals. You need to get the textbook** by the end of the first week of class and bring it to class every day because I refer to problems in the textbook very often. The access code is valid for one (1) year so that you may have an access code if you took quizzes for Pre-algebra the previous semester. MathXL access code is also available from ELAC bookstore for $5. Calculator Policy: In this class, it is very important that you are able to calculate simple numbers mentally or by hand; therefore, NO CALCULATOR is allowed. Using a calculator in class during any tests or quizzes is considered cheating. Math 112 Syllabus 1 Fall 2009

2 Methods of Evaluation You must spend 16 hours 40 minutes during the semester utilizing Math 112 Resource Web Site, attending the Math tutoring lab, or using F5 computer lab to get credit for the lab attendance. The last day to get credit for the lab attendance is Wednesday, December 9, Final Exam: 20% Tests: 45% Online Quizzes: 15%* Participation 10% Homework: 10% Total: 100% To get a CREDIT in this class, a class percentage of 70% or more is needed. Final Exam Tests The final exam is closed book and closed notes. NO calculator can be used during any tests or final or homework. The final exam is cumulative and will count 20% of the grade. The final exam is on Friday, December 18, 7-9 AM. Final Exam is mandatory and failure to attend will result in an F. Each test is closed book and closed notes. You can not use any calculator during any tests. We will have five chapter tests, i.e. Chapters 8, 9, 10, 11, The lowest test score will be dropped. If you are unable to attend the test, please arrange with the instructor to take the test EARLIER (NOT LATER) than the test date. Test counts for 45% of the grade. Quizzes Online quizzes are available by logging in to All students who took this class last semester enjoyed the online quizzes because the online quizzes allowed them to practice more and helped them master the materials in the class. You can take an online quiz unlimited number of times by the deadline and only the best score will be recorded. You can take the online quizzes using computers in the Math Lab (F5) or from home. When you take an online quiz from home, you need to login to >> MathXL so that your time spent on task gets recorded to fulfill the lab hour (16 hours 40 minutes) requirement. All online quizzes are automatically scored when you click Submit. The online quiz is open book and open notes, but you must work alone. Online Quizzes count for 15% of the total grade. *At the end of the semester, the online quiz average is multiplied by 1.1 Homework Assignments Homework is every third problem in each section discussed, i.e. #3, 6, 9, 12, 15, etc. Homework is due every Friday by 8:00 a.m. No late homework is accepted (no exception). If you are unable to attend the class, you have to deliver it to my mailbox in the E5-104 by 12 noon on Thursday before the due date. 3 full credits. Note that the back of the textbook has the answers for most oddnumbered problems and the Student Solution Manual works every odd problem in detail. You need to do your homework assignments because most problems on the tests are similar to those assigned for homework. You can work together (help each other) when doing homework; however, you are not allowed to copy someone s homework. Homework is 10% of your grade. Expectations for Classroom Behavior a. All students need to purchase the textbook and MathXL access code and bring it to class by the second meeting. b. Each student needs to take the responsibility by asking clarification during class. c. Students are required to have at least one work partner who is responsible for answering questions, offering feedback on assignments and providing missed information. d. Students need to arrive on-time and stay until the end of class to meet the attendance requirement. Math Free Tutoring Services Free walk-in tutoring service is available to all students enrolled at ELAC. Please bring your student ID card to the lab. The tutoring lab is staffed by up to 5 tutors every hour. The tutoring lab has videos that would help you in mastering the subjects. Please take advantage of the tutoring lab. The Math Tutoring Lab is located in F5 building. The schedule for fall and spring is as follows: Monday Thursday 10 a.m. 7 p.m. Friday 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. 6 p.m. Attendance Policy A maximum of one absence out of the 15 meetings is allowed. Student must notify his or her partner and the instructor in case of absence. If a student decides to withdraw from the class, he or she should follow the official drop procedure adopted by the college. If a student stops attending classes but does not drop the class by the deadline, the student will receive a grade of F. Cheating Policy Cheating is not tolerated and is subject to ELAC Honesty Policy. Calculators are not allowed to use on any work for this class. Students are not allowed to copy during tests. If a student is caught cheating from another student, both students will get a 0 (zero) on the assignment. If a student is found cheating in a test, the student will get a 0. 4 How to Login to F5 Computers (in the ELAC Main Campus) Each registered student has a unique user ID and password to F5 computers. Your username is the Student ID number which starts with 88 and is a 9-digit number. Your password starts with Elac, and is followed by the month and day of your birthday, as given in the school records, with the format MMDD. For example: John Smith whose and born on January 8, 19##, would have the following account information: User ID: Password: Elac0108 Enter your F5 lab username here for your record: Enter your F5 lab password here for your record: How to Login to Math 112 Web Site (required for tracking the 16- hour requirement) Use Internet Explorer to visit Your username and password are the same as the ones used for logging in to the lab. Click the Math XL button. Do NOT CLOSE the Math 112 browser window so that your time working in Math XL online is tracked until you are done working with the online quizzes. Remember you need to fulfill the 18-hour requirement. Instructions to access the online quizzes in MathXL In order to access your online quizzes in MathXL, you need MathXL access code and must register once. You will create a username and password during the registration process to be used when logging in to MathXL. Note that you will have two different pairs of usernames and password. The first pair of username and password is to be used to log in F5 computers AND the second pair is the one you created to access the online quizzes in MathXL. How to register in MathXL: Before you register in MathXL, you need to have the following items available: Valid address MathXL Student Access Code (bundled with your textbook package). To register in MathXL, please follow the steps below: Using Internet Explorer version 5.5 or later, go to Click Register. Enter your MathXL student access code. 5 Enter your MathXL username here for your record: Enter your MathXL password here for your record. Keep a record of your login name and password in a safe place. Your instructor or lab staff will not be able to retrieve your password. If for some reason you forget your login name / password, you need to call MathXL Tech Support at (8 a.m.-5 p.m. CST Monday through Friday). How to Take the Online Quizzes in MathXL: Once you register, you can login to your class in MathXL by following the steps below: Go to Enter your username and password you created during registration process. If you login the first time, click I am enrolled in a course and my instructor uses Math XL. Enter the course ID, i.e. XL09 31W1 601X 5T12 (note that the third and the tenth letters are zero). If you are planning to take the online tests/quizzes at home, you need to perform Browser Check. You do not need to perform browser check in Math Lab. Click Browser Check button at the top. Click either Do Homework to access either the online quizzes. To view your results, click View Results and then click the Homework radio button. Important Information, please read carefully: 1. MathXL is not compatible with American Online (AOL) Browser. If you subscribe to AOL, you can connect to the Internet using AOL. Once you are connected to the Internet, open Internet Explorer version 5.5 or higher to access MathXL. 2. You should do Browser Check and install the plugins when you work from home computers. The plug-ins is installed in F5 Lab and South Gate Lab. If you do not install the plug-ins correctly, you will not be able to view the online quizzes; i.e. you will only see a blank page. 3. Please make sure that you are enrolled in the correct section number in MathXL so that your instructors can access your records.
