1 First Grade Syllabus Language Arts/Reading/Writing Description: ELA is a required course for all first-grade students. The students will be exposed to a variety of phonemic awareness activities, phonics vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills. 1 st Quarter Skills Consonants and their sounds Word families and rhyme Short vowel sounds CVC words Initial blends Beginning capitalization Punctuation Nouns (singular, plural, and singular possessive) Verbs Adjectives Informal spelling Writing sentences to convey a complete thought Predicting while reading or listening to a story Classifying Understanding the main idea Sequencing Recalling details Fact/fantasy Using context clues Identifying author s purpose Drawing conclusions Compare and contrast New vocabulary Story setting Assessments are made through: student checklist, worksheets, informal assessment of student participation and student writing journals.

2 Math Description: Mathematics is a required course for all first-grade students. The students will be exposed to a wide variety of computation and problem-solving activities using hands on and daily written work. 1 st Quarter Skills Subitizing of numbers to ten Identifying and writing 1-20 Counting Addition and subtraction facts to 10 Completing word problems Identifying part, part, whole Assessment: Grades will be assessed using homework, quizzes, and tests Science The students will be exposed to a wide variety of life, physical, and earth science skills 1 st Quarter Skills Light and Sound Planets Animal Habitats Nocturnal Animals Social Studies Description: Social Studies is a required course for all first graders. The students will be exposed to a wide variety of topics. 1 st Quarter Skills Welcome to School

The students will be exposed to a wide variety of topics. 2 nd Quarter Skills History Northeastern Native Americans Pilgrims Traditions of Thanksgiving Traditions of Christmas There are no assessments required for Social Studies in First Grade.
