Includes unit conversions, variation, measurement of geometric figures, vectors, and solving right and oblique triangles using trigonometry. 2 Text and Supplies: This course uses Pearson s MyLabsPlus which will be accessed via Blackboard. (A separate code is not required.) A scientific calculator is required for this course (non-graphing). The use of a computer with internet access is also required. Optional Textbook: College Mathematics, Ninth Edition, by Cleaves and Hobbs KCTCS General Education Competencies Students should prepare for twenty-first century challenges by gaining: A. Knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural worlds through study in the sciences and mathematics, social sciences, humanities, histories, languages, and the arts. B. Intellectual and practical skills, including inquiry and analysis critical and creative thinking written and oral communication quantitative literacy information literacy teamwork and problem solving C. Personal and social responsibility, including civic knowledge and engagement (local and global) intercultural knowledge and competence ethical reasoning and action foundations and skills for lifelong learning D. Integrative and applied learning, including synthesis and advanced accomplishment across general and specialized skills. Course Specific Competencies (Student Outcomes): Upon completion of this course, the student can: 1. Perform conversions using U.S. customary and SI (metric) measures. 2. Apply basic plane geometric principles of lines, angles, triangles and other polygons, circles and arcs, congruency and similarity. 3. Calculate surface area and volume of basic geometric solids.

3 4. Solve problems involving significant digits and accuracy and precision of numbers. 5. Solve problems involving ratio, proportion, direct, inverse and joint variation. 6. Perform conversions between coordinate systems. 7. Apply fundamentals of trigonometric functions and co-functions to right triangles. 8. Apply the law of sines and the law of cosines to oblique triangles. 9. Solve problems involving compound angles. 10. Identify the vector concept, the components of vectors and add vectors. 11. Vector Concepts, Components and Addition Course Structure: This is an online course and the student is expected to submit online work using MyLabsPlus by the due dates listed in the Course Assignment Outline. In order to adhere to the deadlines, the student is expected to read each section and complete assignments daily. Students will also view available media for each section. Quizzes are given for each chapter. Exams (midterm and final) are given and will be proctored by the testing center on a KCTCS campus.

4 Technology/Media Component: The use of a scientific calculator, computer, and internet are required for success in this course. Graphing calculators will not be permitted for use during exams. Cell phones will not be permitted for use during exams. Media such as videos, animations, PowerPoints, and the multimedia textbook are available on MLP. Service-Learning: Course Requirements and Evaluation: Grades will be based on Homework 20%, Quizzes 40%, and Exams 40%. Homework: Homework assignments will count as 20% of your final grade. A course assignment outline with anticipated due dates is posted on Blackboard. The student is responsible for being aware of the homework assignments and due dates for the assignments. Homework assignments must be completed in the order assigned regardless of due dates. Homework assignments not completed by the end of the semester will receive a score of zero. Quizzes: Quizzes will count as 40% of your final grade. A quiz is assigned for each chapter covered in the course. Quiz anticipated due dates are included in the course assignment outline posted on Blackboard. The student is responsible for being aware of the quizzes and of the due dates for each quiz. All homework assignments in a chapter must be submitted before taking the quiz for that chapter. Homework assignments and quizzes must be completed in the order assigned regardless of the due dates. Students will have two attempts to take the quiz for each chapter. (The second attempt on a chapter quiz can be taken at any time during the semester after the first attempt has been completed.) Only the higher of the two quiz scores for each chapter will be counted. Quizzes will have a 2 hour time limit per attempt. Quizzes not completed by the end of the semester will receive a score of zero. The first attempt on a quiz must be completed before the student can access the assignments for the next chapter. Reviews will be given for the midterm exam and for the final exam. The reviews will count as quiz scores. Exams: Exams will count as 40% of your final grade. There will be a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam. The due dates for the exams are included in the course assignment outline posted on Blackboard. The student will be responsible for being aware of the due dates for the exams and completing the exams during the allotted time period. All assignments and quizzes (including the review) previous to the Midterm Exam must be completed before the student can access the Midterm Exam. All assignments and quizzes previous to the Final Exam (including the review) must be completed before the student can access the Final Exam. The Exams will be proctored by the testing center on a KCTCS campus. The student is responsible for making an appointment with the testing center on their home campus to take the exam. Proctor information can be found at The exam information will be posted on SharePoint for the proctors to retrieve. The student will need to verify with the proctor that they have received the testing information for the exams prior to the scheduled testing dates. The student should expect to receive a score of zero for any exam not completed by the end of the semester. Scientific calculators are permitted for use on exams. Graphing calculators will not be

5 permitted for use during exams. Cell phones will not be permitted for use during exams. Grading Policy: The scale below shows the relationship between your semester percent average and the letter grade you will receive. A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% D = 60% - 69% E = 59% and below Attendance Policy: The student is expected to complete assignments using MyLabsPlus on a regular basis. The student is expected to read each section assigned, view available media, and complete the required homework assignments, quizzes, and exams within the allotted time frame. The student is responsible for being aware of the due dates for each homework assignment, quiz, and exam. Participation is reported to the Admissions Office and Financial Aid Office at various times during the semester. Missed Exam Policy: The Midterm Exam and Final Exam are to be proctored by the testing center on a KCTCS campus. If the student does not complete the midterm and/or final exam by the end of the semester, the student should expect to receive a score of zero for that exam. Late Assignment Policy: The student is expected to complete homework assignments, quizzes, and exams in a timely manner. The student should expect to receive a grade of zero for any homework assignment, quiz, or exam not submitted. The student cannot progress to the next assignment without submitting previous assignments regardless of the due date. The student is given ample opportunity to complete the homework assignments, quizzes, and exams before receiving a zero. The student is required to complete the assignments in the order assigned and must complete all assignments before completing the quiz for that chapter. All assignments and quizzes (including the review) previous to the midterm exam must be completed before the student can access the midterm exam. All assignments and quizzes (including the review) previous to the final exam must be completed before the student can access the final exam. Withdrawal Policy: A student can withdraw from the course at his or her discretion and receive a W until midterm, March 3, After mid-term, the student will be allowed to withdraw with a W only if the student has submitted each Homework assignment and Quiz due, has taken the Midterm Exam, and, in the opinion of the instructor, has made a reasonable effort to pass the course. The student wishing to withdraw that does not meet the criteria will not be permitted to do so and will receive a grade at the end of the semester. The student is responsible for being aware of the proper procedure to withdraw from a course and should contact admissions for further information.
