1 Fall Semester 2018 PBIS-189 Introduction to Statistics Section 005 1:50-2:50 M W F Swart 217 Instructor: Jeannette Boudry boudry@uwosh.edu Swart Office Hours: Prerequisite Course Description: Textbook: Calculator: Help: Written Work: Attendance: 3:00-4:00 MTWF with a grade of C or better or placement A study of topics which includes descriptive statistics and data analysis, elementary probability, binomial and normal probability distributions, the Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals, elementary hypothesis testing, linear regression and correlation. A major goal of this course is an application of these topics to problems arising from the natural sciences, the social sciences, the health industry, and the business environment. Workshop Statistics: Discovery with Data fourth edition by Rossman and Chance is required. This is available in the bookstore. Please bring it to class every day. A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator will be required. Please bring it to class every day. You should get help as soon as you find yourself not understanding something in class. Please come in and see me during my office hours. Tutors are available free of charge in the Math Lab in Swart 113 from approximately 8 am 4 pm Monday through Friday. The exact schedule of hours will be posted. The Center for Academic Resources (CAR) provides free tutoring for students in most undergraduate classes on campus. Check the Tutoring List page on CAR's website ( for a list of tutors. Written work will be worth 25% of your grade. Written work will include quizzes and problem assignments. There will be no make-up quizzes and late work will not be accepted except under extenuating circumstances. If you have a problem let me know about it. You are expected to attend and participate in each class. Attendance will be taken. Tests: There will be 3 exams. The exams will be given in the Testing Center. You will have two hours for each exam. 2 Grading: Grading will be based on tests, quizzes, homework, and attendance weighted as shown below. Scale: A A B B B C C D % D D- Below 60 F Learning Objectives: This course focuses on critical thinking and active learning. Students will be engaged in problem solving and will come to understand that a "problem" is a situation that is unfamiliar and one for which a solution is not immediately evident. Being stuck is a natural state of problem solving and an essential part of improving thinking. PBIS courses offer the opportunity to develop the ability to distinguish problem solving and critical thinking from exercises and routine thinking and to identify attitudes and beliefs that are conducive to success in challenging situations (and those which are not). The intent is to provide a strong intellectual experience that will enhance the university experience and form a solid base for life-long learning. Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to have the ability to: Identify and classify variables, identify research questions in a study. Construct and interpret bar graphs and dot plots. Identify confounding variables and identify sampling biases in observational studies. Explain and implement a random sampling scheme, and understand random assignment. Produce and interpret two-way tables from categorical data. Produce and interpret stemplots and histograms from quantitative data. Calculate and interpret measures of center and spread. Understand basic probability concepts such as sample space and empirical estimates. Explain and calculate probabilities from normal distributions. Understand and describe the principle of sampling variability. Perform simulation analyses to understand the sampling distribution of the mean. Perform and interpret calculations based on the Central Limit Theorem. Calculate and interpret a confidence interval for a population proportion. Explain the reasoning and perform the calculations for a test of significance for a population proportion.

Academic Honesty Policy: Cheating on an exam, plagiarizing or any other form of academic dishonesty will be dealt with in accordance with the current UWO Student Discipline Code. The instructor reserves the right to assign a grade of F for the course should circumstances warrant. The last day to drop without Late Drop Form is Friday Oct. 19 There will be no class on Wed.
