Woot Math is a new hands-on approach to teaching fractions for 4-7th grade. Woot Math is not a skill and drill application, but a personalized progression of instructions and scaffolded problems designed to build number sense and mastery of fractions. Woot Math adaptively tailors the learning progression based on each student s performance in real time. It has been designed from the ground up to align with the Common Core Math Content Standards and Math Practice Standards and the expected learning progressions for these grades. Getting Started To start using Woot Math, you ll need to: Sign up for a teacher account at Setup your class roster using the teacher dashboard Once your account and class are setup, your students can login to Woot Math on either ipad tablets or through a web browser on a desktop, laptop, or Chromebook computer. They can access Woot Math from home or in the classroom. The following instructions will walk you through each step. Sign Up For a Teacher Account Visit to sign up for a teacher account. Registration is free and only requires your school address: After you register, you will be taken to your teacher dashboard to setup your class. Setup Your Class You can manage your student rosters in the Manage My Classes tab of the Teacher Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 2

3 Dashboard at To setup your first class: Press the New Class button. Enter the class name and grade (or comma separated list of grades), and press the Save button: For each student in your class, enter the student s first and last name (or initial), and choose a password that the student can easily remember (such as their student number or birthday.) You may choose to change student username by default the dashboard uses first name + last initial. Usernames must be unique within a class. Press Done when finished Here is an example of a class roster that has been populated with student information: Once you ve created a class, you ll notice a new section in the Manage My Classes tab that contains your Teacher Access Code like the example shown below. 4 Your Teacher Access Code allows your students to access Woot Math. Only share your Teacher Access Code with your students, as it allows access to your Student Login page. How Students Access Woot Math Students can access Woot Math using an ipad, desktop, laptop, or Chromebook computer. You may wish to have students use Woot Math in the classroom, or have students use Woot Math from home. Access From ipad Tablets To access Woot Math from an ipad, download the Woot Math application from the itunes Store. The first time the Woot Math app is run, you ll need to enter the Teacher Access Code (found on the Manage My Classes tab of your Teacher Dashboard) at the start up screen: The app will remember your Teacher Access Code until it is uninstalled from the tablet. For student login instructions, see the Student Login section below. Access From Desktop, Laptop, or Chromebook Computers To access Woot Math from desktop, laptop, or Chromebook computers, your students will Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 4

5 use a web browser (such as Google Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explorer) and navigate to your class Student Login page. The URL for this page can be found on your Manage My Classes tab of the Teacher Dashboard, and it looks like the following example (substitute your own Teacher Access Code in place of 74BF5Q): You can post this link to a class website, blog, list, or set of bookmarks. Only share your Teacher Access Code with your students, as it allows access to your Student Login page. Alternately, your students can navigate to and enter your teacher access code to reach the Student Login page: 1) First click the Student Login button in the upper right corner of the website: 2) Then enter your Teacher Access Code and click Go: Student Login Students use their student username and password (specified when you entered the Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 5

6 classroom roster) to login to Woot Math at the Login screen: Students must: Select their Class (if applicable) from the drop down menu. Select their Name (student username) from the drop down menu. Enter their Password. Upon successful login, students will be taken to their Student Dashboard, and they can start playing through Woot Math content. Student Dashboard The Student Dashboard lays out Woot Math content as a series of levels (or lessons) with 3 star ratings a very familiar concept to most students: Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 6

7 Students may open the level marked new to progress through the content, or replay older levels to improve their star rating. If the student earns 1 or more stars on the newest level, the next level is opened. If the student earns 0 stars, they must repeat the level until the score is improved. A 3 star rating can only be earned by getting all problems correct in a level. Students will typically spend 3 10 minutes on each level. Levels have short instructional videos interleaved with problem solving tasks, mimicking the back and forth of a personal tutor and a student. The videos show example problems being worked, and may even review past material to help the student master the content. Occasionally review levels are opened that consist of problems from many recent levels. As your students work through the progression, their dashboards may be different from each other. Depending on how well they are doing, some students may move through the body of content more quickly than others, but they will all go Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 7

8 through the same overall body of content. For students that are doing well, most levels contain a bonus problem that is only unlocked if the student gets all the other problems correct. Woot Math automatically saves the student s progress. The next time they login, they will be able to pick up from where they left off. A screenshot of a typical student dashboard is show below. This student is ready to open a new lesson or revisit an open lesson to earn more stars and increase their mastery of the material. ipad: Wi Fi Stability and Offline Use Woot Math has been designed to work even with unreliable or intermittent Wi Fi. Internet access is required to login to ensure the latest student progress is loaded from the cloud, and the app will save student progress on the ipad if Wi Fi is unreliable. Your students will see the Check Wi Fi note on their dashboard if the app is unable to save their progress to the cloud. If students see this note, they should either seek reliable Wi Fi (the note will disappear when progress is successfully saved to the cloud), or use the same device the next time they login to Woot Math. Teacher Dashboard To access the Teacher Dashboard, go to this URL: This will take you to a login in page like the one shown below, and from here you will enter your and password to log in to your Teacher Dashboard. 9 Once in the Teacher Dashboard, you can manage your classes as well as view your student progress. Manage My Classes A screenshot of Manage My Classes is shown below, and can be accessed by clicking on the Manage My Classes link at the top of the page. This lets you easily add, remove, and edit classes and student information. Adding a New Class A new class can be added by clicking on the New Class button. Creating a class requires a Class Name and a Grade, as shown below (note that grade can be a common separated list, Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 9

10 such as 6,7,8): Click the save to create the class, or cancel to return to Manage My Classes. Adding Students to a Class Once a class is created, you will automatically be taken to the Add Student page, where you can add your students. Enter the student First Name and Last Name, and a student Username will be automatically suggested for you (First Name + Last Initial). The student Username is what the students will select when logging in to Woot Math. A student Password is also required for each student. An example of the Add Student page is shown below. Teacher Dashboard Summary View A screenshot of a Teacher Dashboard is shown below. The Dashboard lets you easily monitor the progress of your students. 11 Class: The class drop down allows you to switch between the various classes that you have setup under Manage My Classes. Status: Summary statistics are provided to see at a glance how the class is performing. There is a summary line per student, which let s you quickly see how each student is progressing. It includes information on how far each student has progressed and their Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 11

12 average number of correct problems (reported in stars) for each lesson. The maximum stars that can be earned on a lesson are three stars, and to earn three stars, the student must get every problem right on the first try. To get one star, they must get at least most of the problems right. Students must earn at least one star before they can move on to more challenging lessons. Settings (Change Pacing): Woot Math s adaptive pacing engine automatically detects how your students are doing and adjusts the content pacing accordingly. However, you can also suggest changes to the adaptive engine by setting the Change Pacing entry for each student. Note that this will not disable the adaptivity, it will simply help to inform decisions that the adaptive engine makes about the student. Faster implies that the adaptive engine should move the student through the content at a faster rate, and slower implies that the adaptive engine should move the student through the content at a slower rate. Teacher Dashboard Detailed View To access detailed analytics for a student simply click on their name. Below is a screenshot of the top of the detailed student view and a description of the data displayed. Updated Sept 19, 2014 Page 12

13 Dashboard: On the top left is a summary of what the student is currently working on, how much time they have recently spent with Woot Math, and their recent achievements. Mastery: On the top right is a plot of their estimated mastery showing how well they are doing with recent material and how consistently. Below is a screenshot of the bottom of the detailed student view and a description of the data displayed. Lesson Overview: The detailed student view provides a per lesson summary. The date and time the student completed lesson How long it took to complete A lesson description An indication of level of mastery of material Student s Work: For each lesson, the dashboard plots the problems the student solved and videos they watched over time.
