2 EXPERIENCE MINDS-ON STEM EDUCATION The Center for Educational Technology (CET) has been shaping new educational paradigms for our changing world for over 40 years. With MINDS-ON STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), CET brings together its expertise in educational publishing, pedagogical design, and technological innovation to offer grades K-9 students a rich, highly engaging inquiry-based STEM learning approach. CET is one of the international companies involved in the development of science simulations for PISA 2015, selected for its innovation and pedagogical expertise in the development of science simulations. MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF 21C STEM EDUCATION The challenge for STEM education in the 21st century is to help students understand scientific concepts and prepare them to address society's problems, implementing scientific and engineering practices. MINDS-ON STEM meets this challenge by empowering students to : Understand and explain scientific concepts and natural phenomena. Understand the essence and procedures of scientific inquiry, ask questions and define problems, as well as plan and carry out investigations. Interpret scientific evidence, analyze scientific data, and explain natural phenomena using mathematical tools and models. Identify and address those societal problems that can be solved through technology and engineering, based on scientific knowledge. 2 3
3 OUR Unique Offering MINDS-ON STEM is available in the following formats: MINDS STEM teacher1 1Print & Digital Units with embedded learning objects and simulations as well as teacher guides. 2 Digital Repository of Learning Objects Simulations with inquirybased challenges. 3 LMS A learning management system that manages the units and learning objects. 4 HANDS-ON Labdisc Multi-purpose hands-on labs with up to 15 built-in sensors. 4 5
4 MINDS-ON Digital Units At CET, we develop innovative units customized to STEM and other guidelines, including NGSS and the Common Core standards. Our units feature scientific content, hands-on activities, virtual labs, simulations, animations, and technological problems. These units also provide opportunities for students to develop scientific and engineering practices. MINDS-ON Learning Objects MINDS-ON learning objects have multiple benefits: Dynamic simulations of scientific phenomena and concepts Multiple representations, such as dynamic MINDS-ON Science Simulations Today, many students lag behind in developing the skills of scientific inquiry, graphs, tables, and interactive animations Investigations that help students learn by exploring inquiry questions and technological problems Thought-provoking questions, ideal for individual learning, small-group work, and teacher-led class instruction Assessment of student content knowledge and inquiry skills shown to be central to scientific literacy. At CET, we have developed science simulations to specifically address these learning issues: Making the invisible visible through dynamic visual representations Developing student inquiry skills by active learning Increasing student motivation to learn and explore scientific concepts 6 7
5 HANDS-ON STEM Education With the HANDS-ON Labdisc, scientific investigations in environmental science, physics, biology and chemistry become clean, convenient, and immediate. Young scientists become empowered to personally plan and conduct experiments in real time, and thanks to built-in sensors and rapid sampling rates, students can record rapid phenomena such as electricity, sound waves, and mechanics. Labdisc's long battery life and large sample memory enable students to run extended recording sessions (up to a week), an essential feature of experiments in biology, chemistry, and environmental science. PREPARING COMPLETING THE Learning Loop Integrating MINDS-ON and HANDS-ON creates a complete cycle of interdisciplinary, multimedia and inquiry-based 21st century learning. With MINDS-ON simulations, students can visualize abstract scientific concepts. When complimented by hands-on technology, learning is consolidated and brought to life. The HANDS-ON Labdisc enables students to collect and analyze real-life data completing the learning loop.
