1 Lake-Sumter State College Course Syllabus Course Information: Course Prefix/Number: BSC 1011C Course Title: General Biology II with Lab CRN: Credit Hours: 4 Semester: Spring 2019 Lectures: Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 to 10:50 am, Building 2 room 137 Labs: Tuesday 11:30 am to 1:20 pm, SH RM 247 Course Description: This course is a continuation of General Biology I. Topics include surveys of the plant and animal kingdoms, comparative physiology of vertebrate and invertebrate systems, plant and animal development, evolution, and ecology. The course provides laboratory support for the concepts taught in lecture. Laboratory experiences include use of clinical microscope, dissections of selected animal and plant specimens, experiments in natural selection and population dynamics. These exercises are to be completed and handed in for grading according to the due date calendar. Technology Requirements: Canvas is a required component of this course. Students unfamiliar with Canvas are expected to complete the Student Orientation course located in Canvas within the first week of classes. Major writing assignments need to be created and saved in a file format that is compatible with Microsoft Word. If using a word processing program other than Word, it is the student s responsibility to adhere to all formatting and submission requirements. Please ask for help if you are unsure how to save a file in a Word-compatible format. Please see the LSSC Lakehawk Page for information on how to obtain Microsoft Office 365 as an LSSC Student. Student Learning Outcomes: The following outcomes will be assessed in this course. An outcome is defined as something students take with them beyond this course. After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Describe and identify components, assess and discuss results, as well as design (and/or implement) scientific experiments. Critically evaluate qualitative and quantitative data, applying inductive reasoning to arrive at scientifically rational conclusions. Demonstrate competency with the principles of the scientific method, as well as an appreciation for its purpose in obtaining results from a collection of carefully recorded objectively based observations representing the current level of knowledge as accepted by the scientific community. Integrate basic concepts of chemical, physical, and biological processes into a cohesive awareness of the interrelationships that exist between them. Course Objectives: Objectives are defined as what the course will do and/or what the students will do as part of the course. Gain an understanding of the principles of evolution by natural selection to include scientific evidences to support the theory as well as concepts regarding to evolution of populations and the process of speciation. Appreciate life s diversity and interconnected nature. To understand basic ecological concepts such as energy flow, chemical cycling and inter as well as intra specific interactions. To be able to identify representative prokaryotes, protists, fungi, plants, and animals.

The Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) is located on the Leesburg Campus, but arrangements can be made to meet with a student on any campus. Privacy Policy (FERPA): The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. 1232g; 34 CFR Part99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of a student s education records. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar s Office. Zero-Tolerance for Violence Statement: Lake-Sumter State College has a policy of zero tolerance for violence as stated in College Board Rule Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with Board Rule Attendance/Withdrawal Policies: Institutional Information: Once the Add/Drop period passes, students deciding to discontinue class attendance and/or online participation have the responsibility for formal withdrawal by the withdrawal deadline. Withdrawal Deadline: Monday, March 25, 2019 Instructor Policies: Attendance is mandatory for scheduled lecture time slots and for all Lab Sessions, Lab Exams, Mid Terms and the Final Exam. Failure to attend scheduled meetings may result in termination. Electronic devices that are not directly involved in some aspect of the classroom activities must be silenced and put away during scheduled meetings. There is to be no use of cell phones during regularly scheduled meetings. Being on time for meetings is essential and attendance will be based on timely arrivals. Students caught cheating on exams will receive an F in the course. There is no extra credit offered in this course. Classroom Etiquette: Be nice. If you treat others as you would like to be treated then there will be no issues. Follow the golden rule.
4 Grading Information: Grading Scale: A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 59% and below Methods of Evaluation: Evaluation is based on 14 chapters of study and 10 lab meetings with 8 lab reports. There will be 14 Homework assignments corresponding to the 14 Chapters of study. These will be worth 5 points each for a total of 70 points. These will be taken online within the Pearson Modified MasteringBiology website. There will be a Dynamic Study Module for each chapter worth 5 points for a total of 70 points. These will be taken online within the Pearson Modified MasteringBiology website. There will be 14 weekly chapter tests worth 5 points each. They will count 70 points towards your final grade. The questions will be a combination of Multiple Choice, True/False and Interactive and will be taken online within the Pearson Modified MasteringBiology website. These will be time limited. There are 10 scheduled lab meetings and each one will be preceded by a Pre Lab Quiz. These quizzes will be worth one mark and students must be on time to partake in the quiz. Students who are late will be excluded from the lab until the quiz is finished. These will add 10 points towards your final grade. There will be 8 Lab Exercises to be handed in for grading and will receive a grade out of 10 points for completeness, content, diagrams and overall presentation. That is a total of 80 points towards your final grade. There is a Lab Midterm and a Lab Final Exam both worth 50 points for a total of 100 points that will count towards your final grade. These exams will be taken in the lab. There will be two Mid Tem Exams. The first will be worth 60 points and the second will be worth 100 points. The questions will be a combination of Multiple Choice, True/False and Interactive and will be taken in class and online, within the Pearson Modified MasteringBiology website. These are proctored exams with no resources. There will be a Cumulative Final Exam based on the 14 chapters of study from our text, worth 200 points towards your final grade. The questions will be a combination of Multiple Choice, True/False and Interactive and will closely resemble weekly assignment formats. This will be a proctored exam and will be taken online within the Pearson Modified MasteringBiology website.
