2 Course Descriptions Aides Library Aide Students will work in the library, checking materials in and out, shelving books, videos, and reference materials. They will also use the computer card catalog to search for materials. Additional duties will be assigned by the librarian. The ability to alphabetize and numerically sequence are required. Daily attendance is extremely important. For Students: 8 th, by application/sign-up only, submitted for consideration Office Aide Students will work in the main office or copy room. Duties are assigned by the office personnel. Grading is pass/fail with no credit toward the student s GPA or honor roll standing. Students must have maintained at least a 3.00 GPA, completed an application, and be recommended by a teacher. For Students: 8 th, by application/sign-up only, submitted for consideration Teacher Aide Students will work with a teacher. Duties are assigned by the teacher. For Students: 8 th grade, by application sign-up only, submitted for consideration Art 1 Art I is a semester course, the first quarter focuses on the use of diverse mediums, understanding the artistic process, and studio production. The second quarter places emphasis on western art history giving the students a basic understanding of the use and purpose of art through the ages, the studio experience is related to concepts from periods of the past. Art II With a prerequisite of Art I, a student can choose to take Art II. Art II is a semester course that focuses on design, design principles and vocabulary. The Art II students will participate in discussions on five principles of design and do projects that pertain to those principles, learn vocabulary, and then utilize those principles in several advanced projects.
3 Art III With a prerequisite of passing Art I and II students with a strong interest in art can choose to take Art III. Art III is a more advanced course in which the students will start learning about aesthetic theory and the process of critical analysis. The projects they will do are more process intense; these projects will include still life drawing, acrylic painting, and ceramic sculpture. For Student: 8 th grade only Art IV Art IV requires the student to have the confidence and experience to write proposals based on Feldman s model of critical analysis and apply their own aesthetic for projects, and mediums of their choice, Art IV is an independent study course. For Student: 8 th grade only Band 7 th and 8 th Grade Band is for instrumental students. This class is on an advanced level for instrumentals and will build on musical styles. Students will have performance opportunities in many areas including concert, marching, and jazz bands. Performances will include both concerts and regional musical festivals. Before or after school rehearsals may be required. Students must be enrolled in band the previous year or gain instructor permission. Length of Course: Year For Students: 7th, 8 th Broadcast Issues I Applied learning at its best, this class will let students experience everything required for a successful video production. Students will be involved in all aspects of pre-production, production and postproduction. Basic skills for operating cameras, video editing, field production and studio production will be covered. This is a lab class Attendance is critical. No application required, but these characteristics are crucial: TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, CITIZENSHIP, FAIRNESS, and CARING Length of Course: semester Broadcast Issues II So you ve learned how to use all of the equipment in producing a video. It s time to show your stuff! Yes, you will be in charge of producing the MSMS Daily Announcement Show as well as a variety of Maize South Prime Time Live special programming. Lights, Camera, Action!! This is a lab class Attendance is critical! TRUSTWORTHINESS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, CITIZENSHIP, FAIRNESS, and CARING are mandatory characteristics., Must have taken Broadcast I and be approved by Mr. Poynter for this course. Length of Course: semester
4 For Students: 8 th grade Choir Choir class is an incredible experience that boosts your knowledge and self-confidence through the joy and power of music. Singers explore a wide variety of music styles, including a cappella and singing in other languages. From choir trips to musicals, singing at nursing homes or performing at contest, the MSMS choir members become a musical family developing real-life skills such as teamwork, striving towards excellence, and connecting with others. Come join us and make new friends as we raise our voices in harmony! Class Type:Elective teacher s approval or Year Engineering Foundations I Engineering Application is designed to spark an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects and prepare students for further study in high school. This semester class will cover two foundations: Automation and Robotics (AR) Students trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics. They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. Students use a robust robotics platform to design, build and program a solution to solve an existing problem. Design and Modeling (DM) Students are introduced to and use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on our lives. Students use industry standard 3D modeling software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio to showcase their creative solutions. Engineering Foundations II Flight & Space The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through Flight and Space. Students explore the science behind aeronautics and use their knowledge to design, build, and test an airfoil. Custom-built simulation software allows students to experience space travel. Green Architecture Today s students have grown up in an age of green choices. In this unit, students learn how to apply this concept to the fields of architecture and construction by exploring dimensioning, measuring, and architectural sustainability as they design affordable housing units using Autodesk s 3D architectural design software. Pre-requisite: Engineering I
5 Exploring Languages This semester class will give students the basic Knowledge about communication and language, they are going to explore the own language, English; before they will be expose to conversational and cultural aspects of Greek, Latin, Spanish, and French. For Students: 7 th Family and Consumer Science I This semester class will prepare students for family & work life. Students will prepare food labs, study nutrition and wellness, consumer skills, personal finance, sewing construction, independent living skills, career research and successful work ethics. Family and Consumer Sciences II FACS II is a continuation of skills and knowledge learned in FACS I. Students must take FACS I before taking FACS II. News Writing To be in News Writing you must be selected by the teacher on the basis of application. The students will report, interview, and write stories, editorials, columns, and features for the school newspaper which is distributed several times a year. Students will also work with photography. They will learn InDesign, and Adobe Photoshop Cs4, in order to complete layouts and designs. Eighth graders will be editors, and each seventh grade student will be a reporter and have an assigned eighth grade mentor. Dependability, responsibility and interest in writing is a must. Class Type: Encor Elective Length of Course: Encor -Year by application only, submitted for consideration. If interested, please see Ms. Wolf. Orchestra Orchestra is for string students who have previous experience with violin, viola, cello, or string bass in a class setting. This class will continue string technique development and learning new styles. Required performances will include concerts and music festivals. There is a fee for use of school basses and cellos. To participate in the Youth Symphony program, enrollment and participation in school orchestra is required. Some after school rehearsals will be required. Length of Course: Year For 7 th, 8 th Grade Student
6 Physical Education Elective PE Elective is designed to provide knowledge and skills to enjoy physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. The course covers many team sports, as well as individual sports, such as badminton. Spanish and French This semester class will give the students a deeper knowledge in two different languages, Spanish and French, giving them the opportunity to be leaders in these subjects when they continue with languages in high school. This class will be a great aid for students who are planning to continue studying languages in high school and college. Exploring Languages is not a prerequisite for this class. For Students: 8 th Teen Leadership Teen Leadership is a program in which students develop leadership, personal, and business skills. They learn to develop a healthy self-concept, healthy relationships, and learn to understand the concept of personal responsibility. They will develop an understanding of Emotional Intelligence and the skills it measures, which include self-awareness, self-control, self-motivation, and social skills. Students will develop skills in public speaking and communications and an understanding of personal image. They will develop an understanding of the concept of principle-based decision-making and develop their own personal mission statement. They will develop an understanding of the effects of peer pressure and will develop skills to counteract those effects. They will develop an understanding of the principles of parenting, enabling them to become better family members and citizens. They will also develop an understanding of the need for vision in goal-setting, personally and professionally. Yearbook Do you like to meet new people? Do you like to be creative? Would you like to create the yearbook for our school next year? If so, yearbook is the elective for you! Yearbook is a class open to both 7th and 8th grade students. You would have the opportunity to learn how to write in a journalistic style, work design programs like InDesign and Photoshop, and learn how to take different kinds of photographs.yearbook is a challenging, yet fun, elective! There is a short application to complete, and all future staff members will be chosen by the teacher based on that application, current grades, and character traits like responsibility/optimism.
