1 MATH 140: Calculus with Analytic Geometry I Fall 2014 Syllabus MWF 2:30-3:20 p.m. 315E Olmsted T 2:30-3:20 p.m. 338W Olmsted General Course Information Contact Info Instructor: Justin Keller Office: W255M jck26@psu.edu Office Hours: TBA Course Description Functions, limits; analytic geometry; derivatives, differentials, applications; integrals, applications. Webpage Course information, announcements, assignments, and resources will be posted at Grades will be available through ANGEL. Prerequisites Math 022, Math 026; or Math 040 or Math 041. Text University Calculus, Early Transcendentals, 2nd edition; by Joel Hass, et al. Attendance Regular attendance is expected and is vital to success in this course. Calculators By departmental policy, calculators and other electronics like cell phones, laptops, etc. are not allowed during tests and quizzes. A graphing calculator will be useful for homework, but there are many free online tools that can be substituted. Evaluation and Grading Grades will be calculated on a scale of 400 points, and converted to a letter grade as follows: Pts. % WeBWorK Quizzes Worksheets Midterm Midterm Midterm Final Exam Total Point range % range Final Grade A A B B B C C D F WeBWorK This component consists of online homework assignments. Its purpose is to provide you with instant feedback about your progress in mastering certain concepts or techniques. You can attempt each problem an unlimitted number of times, and you are not penalized for wrong answers. As long as you eventually get a problem correct (before the due date) you will recieve full credit for that problem. If you get stuck, don t hesitate to ask for help right away.

2 Log in to WeBWorK at Your username is the same as your access account (webmail) and your initial password is your student ID number. Change your password as soon as possible using the Password/ link in the left menu after logging in. Quizzes Short quizzes will be given approximately once per week, based on a list of problems from the text. Only your 8 best quizzes will be counted. Worksheets Worksheets completed in class (in groups) will be collected and graded based on completion/participation. Each member of a group is responsible for turning in their own copy of the worksheet to recieve credit. Exams The following is tentative and subject to change. Make-up policy If you need to miss a quiz or exam because of participation in a university athletics program or other university sanctioned event, or due to a medical or family emergency, please let me know at least one week in advance (to the extent that this is possible) so that I can prepare a make up quiz/exam. There will be no make up quizzes/exams without documentation, or for reasons other than those listsed above. 2
