1 Grading Procedures and Expectations Microsoft Word 2016 Mrs. Sapusek Tutorial Hours Tuesday 4-5 Google Voice: Western Guilford High School Or by Appt. School: Ext I. What are we going to learn? Congratulations! You have just been hired by the Western CTE Department. At Western, our company policy is Right Time, Right Place, Right Way. We are here to help each other gain valuable work skills to succeed in the 21 st century work-world. This course will prepare you to earn your Microsoft 2016 certifications and WorkKeys certification. In addition, the course will focus on soft skills employers look for when hiring the best employees like you! Soft skills include: teamwork, communication, ethics, time management, organization and punctuality. II. What materials do I need? You must bring to class everyday: Writing utensils Notebook paper Headphones/ earbuds (Optional) III. How to get an A Practice, practice, practice. The more you listen, speak and practice the language, the more successful you will become. In addition, study skills and organization are an important part of becoming a successful student. How will you be graded? A. Homework and In-Class Work - 10% Homework is to be a tool to reinforce mastery of the material learned and prepare for tests and quizzes. Homework should be relevant to the student and prepare for success in the class. o Vocabulary homework- Students will have the vocabulary words to learn for the unit the first day of the unit. They have choices of work to do. They must select 3 assignments per unit to complete BY the unit test. They are encouraged to complete the tasks early and turn them in to use as study tools. They need to complete the homework form and provide all assignments with the form to be recorded. Because the student will have 2-3 weeks to complete Homework choice it is due NO LATER than the day of the unit test. NO LATE WORK will be accepted. o It is encouraged to do the assignments early. Grammar homework- Students will receive a grammar packet the first day of the unit. They are to complete it throughout the unit. The grammar packet will be due and graded for accuracy the MONDAY before the test. It will be used Monday as review for test. All tests are scheduled for Tuesday unless otherwise notified. Grammar packet may have a few complete at least the section due dates that will be grades on completion to keep the lessons moving and check for understand during the unit. Because the students will have 2-3 weeks to work on the Grammar packet it is due NO LATER than the Monday before the test. NO LATE WORK will be accepted. B. Quizzes- 20% Quizzes will occur about once a week Quizzes may be announced or pop unannounced Quizzes will be to check to vocabulary and grammar understanding

Performances/Participation- 30% Skits Creative activities Weekly participation chart Binder check. o Students are to maintain a Spanish Binder. o They are to do the daily journal and maintain the work required in class. o Binders will be collected unannounced and graded to make sure they are completed and students are staying on task in class. o Binders MUST BE ONLY for Spanish. They need 5 dividers to keep Journals, Vocabulary, Grammar, Culture, and Worksheets/Graded Work D. Tests/Projects/Presentations- 40% Tests will be announced in advance (Wednesday- test day for World Language) Students will be told what to expect and how to study for the test Students will be able to edit all tests on their own during Sra. Sapusek s Tutorial Hour Wednesday 4-5 or during appointment or with Sra. Bigelow on her tutorial hours Thursday 4-5 All tests and quizzes will be kept in the class with a chart the student will use to track their progress. The folder may not leave the classroom. Honor Code will be enforced during all tests and quizzes Projects- Students will have a Spanish project AT LEAST once per 9 weeks Grades will be updated on a weekly basis to be viewable online. There are times where due to student absences or extenuating circumstances; entries may not be updated for an individual student. If you have individual questions, feel free to me. IV. Communications Power School Grades are uploaded on a regular basis in Power School Students are encouraged to check their grades Students are responsible for looking up their grades Do not Mrs. Sapusek and ask What is my grade in your class? or Why do I have a Grade in your class Remind Parents and students, stay informed by signing up for Remind messages. This is a great tool and it is completely free to sign up. Your child will receive information to sign up. This will allow me to send text message reminders of important assignments. is a formal way to communicate with your teacher and fellow students. Canvas will be used to view videos and tutorials. Parents may join the Canvas class and observe the class Canvas will be used for group collaboration projection Canvas will be used for Conferences for extra tutorials or make-up time

3 IV. What is Western s T.A.A.G. policy? Successful students are present and ready to learn in the classroom every day. Western expectation is that the student will come to class, on-time prepared to learn with a positive attitude. TAAG: (Tardies, Attendance, Academics, and Grades) Tardies: Showing up on time to school every day can help students develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments. This habit can serve high school students well through college and into their future careers. Attendance: Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior and have a better chance of graduating from high school. Completing make-up time for excessive absences is essential. Academics: If you find yourself struggling in class, try the following steps to improve your grade: o Talk with your teacher. o Be an active participate in class. o Attend Tutorials. o Complete all assigned work. o Study with friends for upcoming quizzes and/or tests. o Ask for help and supports frequently. Teacher Counselor Curriculum Facilitator Administrator Grades: Make sure that you check your grades once a week through the student portal. o Minimum expectations for grades during the quarter: 2 tests per quarter Teacher made Common Cumulative Exam per quarter (1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd ) 4 quizzes per quarter Multiple classwork and homework assignments per quarter V. What if I am tardy? Student must arrive to class on time. Tardy is defined as not in the classroom when the bell rings. WESTERN TARDY DISCIPLINE STEPS 1 st Tardy Warning 2 nd Tardy Teacher contacts parent and/or guardian & documents contact 3 rd Tardy Teacher contacts parent and/or guardian & documents contact 4 th Tardy Teacher assigned After School Detention 5 th Tardy Teacher make Academic Referral to Counseling Counseling contact of parent; may also include Parent-Teacher Conference 6 th Tardy Teacher completes Discipline Referral; Administrative action steps Additional policy steps will be determined in collaboration with the Administrative Team, Counseling Department, Principal Staff Advisory Team, Crisis Team, and the Western Guilford Leadership Team. Additional potential Tardy discipline options: Mandated tutorials, Attendance Intervention Contract, suspension of driving/riding privileges, In School Suspension, and/or Out of School Suspension.

4 I. What if I am absent? It is the student s responsibility to make up all work missed during their absence. Students may teacher for missing work or contact a classmate. All homework is listed on the back board by month. Get all absent handouts from black trays. Students have 3 DAYS after absences (GCS policy) 1. Upcoming tests will be announced. If students miss the day before a test, they are still required to take the test 2. If you miss in-class points for absences, they may not be made up. Certain classroom activities cannot be recreated. Class attendance is very important to the success of learning the language. 3. Earning points back for absent or unexcused work may mean coming in during tutoring hours to make up work. 4. Per GCS policy- after a student misses 3 class period they MUST make up time. ½ for each class after Make-up AS SOON as possible. DON T wait until 9 weeks and want to make up 6 hours! 2. Must sign in and out with teacher for documentation of make-up time. 3. How do I make up time? Come to tutorial hours A SPANISH TEACHER 1. Ms. Bigelow- Tuesday Ms. Sapusek- Wednesday Ms. Mata- Thursday Log in to a schedule conference held once every 2 weeks from 7-8 pm via Canvas 4. If a student is more than 10 minutes tardy to a class- it is considered UNEXCUSED absence VI. What if I am failing? If a student is danger of failing a 9 weeks, and the grade is NO LOWER than a 50%, they will be offer acceleration. Acceleration will be provided on either StudySpanish.com website or Conjuguemos.com website. Parents must sign the contract for student and the student MUST COMPLETE ALL WORK to 100% to earn a 60% for the quarter. Acceleration ONLY affects quarter grades. VII. How can I help improve my Spanish? -Canvas- Students are encouraged to use Canvas to review videos, Power Points and notes over the lessons covered in class -Conjuguemos.com- Student are encouraged to use the web site to play games to review and reinforce Grammar and Vocabulary. They will have assignments on the website throughout the year. -Quizlet.com- is a great website for students to use in all their classes to help make flash and study vocabulary -StudySpanish.com- Great website if they student need more tutorial on a specific grammar concept VIII. What does Mrs. Sapusek expect from me? Mrs. Sapusek expects all of her students to do their best every day and to ask for help whenever they have questions. Also, the following expectations must be listed: 1. BE PREPARED Come to class ready to learn with their Spanish Binder, writing utensils and supplies. 2. RESPECT Respect everyone in the classroom including yourself. 3. WESTERN POLICIES Western High School tardy policy and attendance policy will be enforced. Tardy means not in the classroom before the bell sounds. The rules and policies in the student s handbook will be enforced. 4. No drinks or food in the class. - Bottle Water is the only exception. 5. If you have a problem with an issue in class, speak to Sra. Sapusek about it at an appropriate time, NOT in front of the class. 6. Electronics- No cell phones or electronics are to be visible or heard in the classroom unless directed by the teacher for classroom use only. See below for Western policy that will be enforced. 7. HAVE FUN!

5 IX. Can I go to the bathroom? Class time is very important and it is encouraged to take care of bathroom situations during passing period. Some times that may not be possible. Students may not leave the first 10 minutes or last 10 minutes of class Students are giving 3 bathroom pass per 9 weeks to use if needed If they keep the bathroom passes they are used as extra credit in the class (Rules are posted in the class) If there is a medical issue, it is encouraged the parent contact Mrs. Sapusek so we can make the appropriate accommodations. X. What happens if I do not meet expectations? For major classroom misconduct the student will be sent to ALC to be dealt with by administration. Failure to meet the expectations listed above will result in the following steps to ensure the students can meet the classroom expectations: 1. First infraction- student will receive a verbal reminder of the expectation that was not met. 2. Second infraction- Student sign an infraction form and parent will be contacted 3. Third infraction- Student will serve after school detention within 2 days of infraction 4. Fourth infraction- Referral to administration. HONOR CODE: All students must do their own work. If you are found to have cheated on an assignment, quiz, or test you will receive a zero. It is considered cheating to use a translator or a Spanish-speaking friend to do your assignments. You may use a Spanish/English Dictionary or an online dictionary to look up a word. You may not use it to help conjugate verbs or to translate complete sentences or phrases. XI. Can I use my cell phone in class? ELECTRONIC DEVICES POLICY Out of Sight, Out of Sound during class. All Cell phones must be put away during class. Electronic devices may ONLY be used for instructional purposes as directed by content area teacher and during class changes and /or lunch. Students are not allowed to answer the phone, text, or check the phone at any point during class. Parents/guardians or family members must contact the main office and/or a designated school official to contact a student during instructional time. Western Guilford is NOT responsible for the items are lost, damaged, and/or stolen. ELECTRONIC DEVICE STEPS 1 st offense: Verbal warning 2 nd offense: Device is taken and returned to the student at the end of the class period. Parent/guardian contacted. 3 rd offense: Device is taken, given to the front office, and returned at the end of the school day to the student. Parent/guardian contacted. Students will be required to sign the Electronic Release Form in the main office. 4 th offense: Device is taken and given to the front office. Parent/guardian contacted. Parents are required to pick up the student s device from the main office and sign the Electronic Release Form. Repeat violations may result in ASD, ISS and/or up to 3 days OSS. Additional policy steps may be added via review by and in collaboration with the Administrative Team, Principal Staff Advisory Team, Crisis Team, and the Western Guilford Leadership Team (WGLT).
