Dear Brooklyn Park Community, Note from Principal Walker The month of November is an exciting month. The end of the 1 st Quarter, the change in the seasons, and of course the holidays. As we move into the winter months and the holidays I have a few suggestions and updates: Students will continue to have outdoor recess. If the weather is below freezing students will have structured indoor recess. Please make sure students are dressed for the colder temperatures. In case of implement weather please check the AACPS Website, Twitter, Facebook, or the local news for school closure, late arrival or early dismissal. Thank you for an amazing turnout for Parent Teacher Conferences. If you still have a question or concern, please contact your child s teacher. Thanks for your support. Over the next few weeks, I will be sending home information about purchasing Scholastic News for every child. Scholastic News is a great resource to discuss current events and read non-fiction. My goal is to have a school-wide subscription by January 2019, more information to follow. I wish you a very peaceful and relaxing holiday season. Before Child Care Openings Currently Available at Brooklyn Park Elementary The Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Park s sponsored Child Care program has openings for the before school program. The program operates in the Brooklyn Park cafeteria from 7:00 am until the start of the school day, every day that school is open for students. 4 BPES Mrs. Chisholm s Corner November PBIS News Traditionally November is the month that we remember what we are thankful for and celebrate relationships with family members and friends. We break bread together and give back to our communities. Celebrate your children and be thankful for each of the gifts they have. Plan something special to do with your child. It can be something as simple as playing a game together or making a batch of cookies. Enjoy the season! K. Chisholm Attendance matters. Please bring your child to school every day! The teacher of the month is Ms. Perkins. Ms. Perkins has worked at BPES since January of She has brought joy, excitement, and color to our building. Her creativity, team-spirit, and outgoing personality have enabled her to become an important and valued member of our BPES Staff. Please take some time this month to recognize her with a friendly note, word of thanks, or a small gift. Let s show her how thankful we are to have her at BPES.

5 CLASSROOM NEWS Prekindergarten October has been a month full of fun in Pre-K! As we enter November, we have many new topics we will be learning about. In our current theme; Exploring the Changing Me, we have focused on what makes us unique and how families are the same and different. Next, we will be learning about our five senses and how they help us describe objects. In math, we will continue to count objects using 1 to 1. Students will use their counting abilities to compare sets of objects (greater than, less than, equal to). We will continue to work on writing numerals to 5, identify the total amount of a set and building sets. In foundational skills, we will be learning about letter "Aa" and "Mm". We will also learn the sight words to and am. We are so proud of the progress our students have made in small group literacy instruction. We have been diving into books, exploring sounds, and began learning about rhyming words and syllables. Thank you for your continued support of these skills at home! Kindergarten Kindergarten students are learning about their community. We are practicing counting and beginning to read leveled text. Unity Day was amazing! We learned how to stand up to bullying and show kindness to others. Kindergarten students will have a field trip in December. More details will be sent home this month. First Grade This quarter your child will be studying how they are all connected and how who we are and what we do makes the World a better place. Math: Welcome to Marking Period 2. To begin this second quarter your child will continue to develop their Number Sense by examining place value of two digit numbers. Students will learn about tens and how to add and subtract tens. Students will continue to explore place value and understand the value of digits in numbers 0-99, and be able to determine 10 more and 10 less than a number by examining place value (noticing that only the tens digit changes). as students explore finding sums and differences. Your child will continue to solve problems using strategies used in Theme 1. The problems that your child will be solving involve add to and take from. The use of concrete materials is essential to be successful in problem solving. Reading: Phonics/Spelling: s blends/r blends; spill, spin, grab, grass, drip, drop Grammar: irregular plural nouns and sentence punctuation High Frequency Words: live, many, out, place. Review eat, no, of, some, who Second Grade As we move into the second marking period, we will be changing our units of study. We will be focusing on being explorers and understanding the world around us. In math, we will finish up with measurement and begin adding and subtracting numbers using different problem-solving strategies. Please continue to have your child practice their basic math facts and complete their homework daily. We are continuing to read fiction and non-fiction texts during reading. Small group instruction uses the students instructional level, while other activities such as Explicit Comprehension and Interactive Read Aloud involve on-grade level texts. Please continue to have your child read every night for at least 20 minutes and have them fill out their Book-It calendars. We will be finishing up with writing narratives and moving into writing research and lab reports such as scientists do. As always thank you for your support at home, we are a family at BPES and we all are doing great things for our children!

6 Third Grade The first quarter of 3rd grade has flown by!!! Reading is the foundation for everything we do! Your child visits the media center each week and has the opportunity to select three books of their choice to read for enjoyment and practice the reading skills they are learning during their Guided Reading lessons. Encourage your child to share the books they select with you. A great time to do this is just before bed. It allows for some quality family reading time and can help prepare children for a good night s rest. Have your child read a chapter out loud to you and ask them about their favorite part or ask them to make predictions about what they think will happen in the next chapter. The second marking period starts on November 12th. In the month of November, students will be listening to and reading a variety of informational and literary texts that have a common theme of Collaboration. We will focus on reading strategies like identifying the main idea and supporting details and summarizing. We will also explore figurative language, new vocabulary, comparing and contrasting, and using illustrations to help us gain meaning. The children will be receiving a new reading homework choice menu for quarter 2 that will support these strategies. In math we will be moving to Unit 4 which is Fractions! Students will be bringing home the Unit 4 Parent Connection paper. This is very useful for homework completion. Please continue to practice the basic multiplication facts as these will come up again later in the year! In social studies we will be continuing talking about communities. We will be discussing why people migrate/move from one location to another and how different cultures are represented in our community, along with other topics. Science will consist of the life cycle of animals. Fourth Grade Reading- This month, fourth grade will continue to work on literary text elements. Students will be identifying the theme within texts, comparing two texts, and referring to details and examples when explaining what the text says. Please encourage your child to read every night for at least 20 minutes. Ask your child questions about what they're reading. Also, please make sure your child is completing their Book It Calendar! Math- This month in math, students will be utilizing their multiplication and division strategies to solve problems. Students will also be comparing fractions and looking at measurement conversions. Please be sure your child is completing their nightly math homework. Also, keep an eye out for any extra credit practice sent home. It is important your child begins to master their multiplication facts This will help them immensely this year and next! Please reach out to your child's teacher for clarification or additional resources. Fifth Grade Fifth grade is excited about Drownproofing in December. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need chaperones who have completed the fingerprint background check to go with us on the field trip. The trip is 4 day, 5 hours per day. We need parents for all four days. You can volunteer for all the days or just some of the days. Information about fingerprinting and field trip permission slips have been sent home. Please check with your child if you have not seen the information. Please continue to work with your child to memorize the multiplication facts. Every child should be reading at least 20 minutes per day every day.

7 Physical Education: Physical Education News: During the month of October, students participated in a soccer unit where they practiced their dribbling, trapping, passing, and receiving skills as well as offensive and defensive strategies. Students in the intermediate grades had the opportunity to put their skills to the test in a real soccer game. At the end of the month, students began their gymnastics unit which will carry over into the month of November. Students will improve their balance and strength through a variety of stunts, rolls, animal walks, and balance activities. Please make sure that your student is wearing their tennis shoes and clothing appropriate for rolling and tumbling on the mats. More exciting news in the Art Room: Your talented child has been creating a beautiful piece of artwork that you will see soon on their personalized catalog coming home the end of November. Celebrate your child s artistic achievement! You ll be able to order timeless keepsakes to cherish for years to come. Check out for gift ideas. In addition to receiving your keepsakes, the proceeds made will go to the BPES art department for materials so we can continue making beautiful art!
