1 Bernice Vossbeck Elementary 5K Roar and Soar Are you interested in participating in a fun family event?! Why not register for the Roar & Soar 5K! Start training as a family now ~ what a great reason to go for long walks and jogs together! Mark your Calendar for Saturday, May 5th for the 3rd Annual 5K Roar & Soar! This is a fundraiser Event and all of the proceeds benefit the students of Fisher, Isom, & Bernice Vossbeck Elementary Schools! Please continue to collect Box Tops until May 25th! Turn them in to your class box ~ the TOP 3 CLASSES will win a party!! Student Placement Information Forms Student Placement Information forms will be available in the Office beginning April 9th after Spring Break. These are for the school year. The purpose of this form is to indicate special abilities or needs that your child may have that the school staff may not be aware of. Our Teachers, Counselor, Specialists, and Principal will collaborate together and take a number of extensive measures to place students equitably. This allows our Students to perform at high levels with appropriate support. Should you wish to contribute by completing a Student Information Form, please pick one up in the main office. The deadline for submitting this form is Friday, May 4th at 3:00 p.m. Interested in a position on the Parent Volunteer Team? We do have some positions opening up for the School Year ~ If this is something that interests you, please join us on Monday, April 23rd at 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the BVE Conference Room. Meet the existing team and find out what the PVT is all about and what positions are available! Our executive board oversees all PVT events, plans the program calendar and budget. 2 Dear families, March is traditionally a long month, and I know that many of you are feeling the effects of more. ~Supt. Jim Frey I borrowed this quote from our Lynden School District Superintendent because I recognize the busy lives all of our families lead and then spring tends to amp it up another to another level. Plus, when it comes to our PNW weather, more precipitation can tend to place a damper on things especially as we shield ourselves from the elements at the ball fields! Thankfully, spring and eventually summer offers more sunshine and other variables that help us flourish and grow. Here are a few of the indicators providing the promise of this joy: The Family Fun Night coordinated by our Parent Volunteer Team (PVT) Leaders was phenomenal! Thank you for the community connection reps; the photos; the Food; the Ninja Obstacle Course; and the fabulous rides. Wow! Our concerts have been delightful; our Vossbeck Voices performed in the Ferndale Festival; and we look forward to ukulele playing, along with the next two 1 st and 2 nd grade concerts on April 19 th. We met and got to know over 60 pre-registered Kindies during our Tour and Welcome to BVE activities last week. We will offer a couple more of those opportunities in June and again in August as we anticipate our newest recruits to BVE. Our Teachers and Paras enjoyed professional development time together on Wednesday, 3/21 during their PLC session and throughout the day as they were able to watch each other s lessons and develop further strategies on how to foster student collaboration while assessing the learning taking place. Lynden Middle School is very excited to meet all of the incoming 6th graders and their parents/guardians!! We will be having an Information Night on Thursday, May 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. This is a chance to hear more about the middle school experience, clubs, electives, student schedules and so much more! You will get to see a virtual tour of the Brand New LMS! It is so beautiful!! If you have any questions before then, feel free to contact Annette Kooistra, Registrar, or call ext. #3. We will see you on Thursday, May 6:30 pm at LMS. We will meet in the Auditorium and then refreshments will be available in the Cafeteria.

3 Safety First: As listed in our BVE School Improvement Plan (SIP) Action Plans, school safety and the wellbeing of our students is our top priority. We want you to know that we are committed to providing a safe and caring environment at BVE so that our students can get down to the primary business of learning. We work together to meet the needs of each student at our school using the multi-tiered system of support through our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) measures. Proactive PREVENTION and RESPONSIVE REINFORCEMENT measures are in place providing consistency according to Washington State RCW/WAC and School District Policies and Procedures. Whether it is through monitoring safe arrival and dismissal; practicing safety drills; weekly class visits by the counselor focusing on various strategies (Counselor Corner Content in each month s BVE Newsletter); learning about how to look out for each other by not being a Bystander when noticing harassment, intimidation, and other inappropriate behaviors; providing small group or individualized support; and a networking of services through our District Family Community Services, we aim to provide opportunities for students to lead through positive school wide activities, and other important structures. If you ever have ideas about other ways we can help maintain a safe and caring environment at BVE, our Principal and staff leadership welcomes your input through a number of ways: 1. Scheduling a time to meet with Mrs. Midboe to analyze the current procedures and to discuss other opportunities; 2. Mentioning ideas during any of the scheduled student conference times/mdt s/cst s/iep s, etc; 3. Joining us as a guest at our regular Parent Learning Improvement Team (LIT) meetings, etc. These dates and opportunities are communicated through our parent newsletter that is ed home and other correspondence; but, we encourage you to seize the opportunity to call the office and schedule a time, anytime. We feel honored to serve the children of the community of Lynden. Thank you for your support and trusting us to meet the needs of your child while they are at school. When it comes to embodying that statement, one could argue that no one parallels how COOL our BVE Office Operation Managers are... Please pause the week of April 25 to honor them during Administrative Professionals Day by showing your own expression of kindness out of our gratefulness and recognition of their devotion to the kids, staff, & families of BVE! KIND IS COOL

4 Volume 20 Issue 8 Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) The state SBA is still designed to measure student achievement with a clear and challenging set of standards. These standards are broken down to specific Grade Level or Performance Expectations (GLE or PE s) which provide a level of specificity to help more students understand and apply concepts in reading, writing, math and science and connect a series of learning competencies necessary to create proficient readers. These assessments require students to apply their knowledge by typing responses, comparing information from different texts, using math skills to create equations and solve problems by explaining the steps they took to arrive at the answer. The 5th grade Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) will continue to assess students in Physical, Earth and Life Sciences centered on the themes of inquiry, systems and interconnections. Much like the SBA English Language Arts (ELA) and Math portions, the science assessment will include multiple choice, short answer questions to assess conceptual understanding while short answer and extended response items assess applications of concepts and skills. Because we know that a child s success is dependent on all aspects of their support network we are committed to providing utmost structure in a nurturing manner. We are asking that you continue to support your son or daughter s learning outcomes best by ensuring they get plenty of nourishment and rest during the assessment period. They may be feeling some anxiety or nervousness during this time, so positive support and encouragement from both home and school will help alleviate those symptoms. Remind them that this is the time to celebrate their growth that has been built on a strong Primary and Elementary Level foundation! BVE Yearlong Focus for Instruction Our Focus for Instruction ( ) has been the following: 1. Aligned Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum a. Essential Outcomes priority standards in all subject areas including the Social/Emotional/ Behavioral expectations b. Same skills, concepts, and knowledge at each grade aligned in all content areas c. Technology Function & Safety in this digital era. 2. Instruction a. Customized Staff Development incorporating 21st century competencies b. RTI multi-tiered systems of support c. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Solution Center d. Work toward paperless when possible and purposeful in communicating with parents.
