3 Evaluation Situation 2 Complete this activity after you have finished Learning Situation 5 in your learning guide. It is recommended that you to obtain a mark of 60% or more in the Evaluation Situations before doing the final exam for this course. Instructions Fill out the section titled student identification. You may consult your course notes and an English language dictionary. Give this Evaluation Situation to your teacher if you are following the course at an adult education centre or send it to your teacher or tutor if you are following a distance course. We recommend that you keep a photocopy of your work, just to be safe. When you receive your corrected copy, read your teacher s or tutor s comments carefully. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask for feedback. SOFAD 3

4 ENG English and the World of Story English and The World of Story (ENG ) Evaluation Situation 2 It s time to show your teacher or tutor what you ve learned about how to compare films and stories. Tasks in this Evaluation Situation are related to the work you have done in the course up to the end of Learning Situation 5. Read the instructions carefully, refer back to what you have learned in the course so far, and follow the steps to complete the work. Take your time and remember to read over your work before you hand it in. For each task, you will be provided with a checklist to help ensure you have completed the task. At the end of the Evaluation Situation, you will find the evaluation grids that your teacher or tutor will use to grade your work. Unless your teacher or tutor gives you specific instructions, you may use a word processor or write by hand on loose-leaf paper. Remember to write your name, your student number, the date, and the title of the activity at the beginning of every task. You may use a dictionary and any of your notes. Evaluation Situation 2 is divided into two tasks: Task 1 Analysis of features of a Novella and a Film in a Comparison Grid Task 2 Write an Essay Comparing and Contrasting a Film and a Novella 30 points 70 points Time to get to work! gpointstudio / Shutterstock 4 SOFAD

5 Evaluation Situation 2 Before carrying out these tasks, read the following novella and watch the movie which was adapted from it. You may watch or read in whatever order that pleases you. Read the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. You can buy the novella online or in a bookstore near you, published in a Stephen King collection called Different Seasons. Watch the movie The Shawshank Redemption, adapted from the Stephen King novella. This movie is available through various online streaming services or can be purchased on DVD. During the reading and viewing process, write notes about the characters, plot, key scenes and dialogue, point of view, themes and messages, literary devices, or cinematography as appropriate. As you read or watch the second work, note your observations on what was changed between the book and the movie. Task 1: Create a Comparison Grid Analyze how the story in the novella was adapted to screen by filling in the grid on the next page with details from the two works. The completed grid will also help you to organize the content for your essay. SOFAD 5

Enter 6 10 important points Characters: Note major alterations in important characters. Note which characters were retained, combined, altered, or eliminated. Point of view, narrator: Note how the novella was narrated and how the movie handled this point of view. Literary devices and cinematic devices: Note how the author and filmmaker used the appropriate devices to tell the story. 7 Evaluation Situation 2 Checklist for the Comparison Grid In your notes, did you compare the novella and film version of: Yes No The character of Andy The character of Red The character(s) of the warden(s) The sisters The titles How Andy gets his money to prepare a new life What happens to Tommy Williams What happens to the warden The theme of hope Foreshadowing Andy s escape The symbolism of the posters How violence is presented (violent scenes included in the novella, but omitted from the film) The cinematic devices such as the absence or use of color; voice-over of the narrator; sound; various camera shots Task 2: Write a Comparison/Contrast Essay Write an essay between 400 to 500 words in length, comparing Stephen King s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption with the movie The Shawshank Redemption. You may choose to write an overall comparison examining how each work addresses the same points (e.g. plot, character, narrative devices (cinematic and literary), theme, etc.). You may also choose to focus in more detail about how each work addresses one of those points. You may also choose to focus on why the changes created a greater or lesser impact on audiences. Review Learning Situation 5 (LS5) for details on how to write a thesis statement, an outline, an introduction, topic sentences, and a conclusion. In an essay of this length, five paragraphs are sufficient, but you may choose to break your text into more paragraphs if this is justified by your content. Follow these steps: 1. Use the comparison grid you completed in Task 1 to help with examples taken from the novella and from the film. 2. First, prepare an overview outline in order to clarify how your essay will be structured. Use the chart below. 3. Then, fill in a detailed outline in order to guide you in your writing. Use the chart below. 4. Write your essay. 5. Use the following checklist to guide you in revising and editing your first draft. SOFAD 7

Evaluation Situation 2 Essay Checklist Verify that your thesis is a clearly worded sentence (or two) making a clear comparison between the novella and the film. Add or clarify examples from both the novella and the film which illustrate your comparison points. Be more specific in your examples. Ensure that all parts of your essay relate to the thesis. Correct spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. Reword sentences and phrases so that what you are saying is clearer. Combine or split sentences in order to clarify meaning. Change weaker words for stronger ones. Rewrite your introduction if necessary, so that it is clearer and more interesting. Look for a more effective opening sentence if necessary. Ensure that you mentioned the title of the novella and of the film in your introduction. Add the signposts which make the steps in your discussion clearer: use topic sentences relating back to your argument or thesis. Insert more linking words so that the steps in your argument are clarified. Rewrite your conclusion if necessary, so that it is more final and comprehensive.
