2 JOB DESCRIPTION POST: TEACHER OF ENGLISH RESPONSIBLE TO: TEACHER IN CHARGE OF A SUBJECT HEAD OF DEPARTMENT HEAD OF YEAR SLT MEMBERS PURPOSE OF THE JOB: a. To implement policies as determined by the governing body and the Headteacher. b. To implement and deliver an appropriate curriculum within designated subject area. c. To assess and monitor progress the development of designated students. d. To contribute to raising standards of student attainment and of achievement. e. To fulfil the role of form tutor. f. To fulfil professional duties outlined in the Teachers Conditions of Service. DUTIES: The Teachers Pay and Conditions Document specifies the general professional duties of a teacher. Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the post, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. PARTICULAR DUTIES: Under the overall direction of the Headteacher.

3 TEACHING Have a secure and up to date knowledge and understanding of the concepts and skills necessary to teach specialist subjects. Plan to achieve progression in pupils learning in line with agreed expectations on targets. Set homework, mark and assess in line with school policies. Engage with school-wide learning initiatives. Ensure that high quality teaching and learning takes place in all allocated classes. Mark, assess, record and report on pupil achievement and maintain records as stated in the schools policy. Maintain accurate records and use assessment data to monitor progress, targets and take action (e.g. SEN, Gifted & Talented, praise and track under achievement). Contribute to the development of Schemes of Learning, School and Team policies as requested. Maintain a purposeful, orderly classroom environment including neat storage, learning centred display and by employing a range of behaviour management strategies. Monitor targets for pupils on report. Undertake specific duties within the Team as agreed with your line manager. Attend and contribute positively to meetings and professional development activities. Promote and contribute where possible to the school s extra-curricular programme. Meet deadlines for reports, marking, submission of coursework and other assignments. Prepare pupils for examinations and take part in standardisation or moderating exercises as require by the Team or examination boards. Contribute to Citizenship teaching, special one day events and to the ethos of a Business and Enterprise Specialist School. Provide a welcoming environment to visitors and respond within 24 hours to telephone calls and within 7 days to written correspondence. Follow School Policy and support the Leadership Team in the effective operation of the school. Carry out the role of form tutor as required. 6 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Thank you for responding to our advertisement. We hope you are enthusiastic, energetic, a good communicator and enjoy the challenges and many rewards that come with the profession. Why the West Hatch English Department? The English Department at West Hatch High School is successful, supportive and friendly. We occupy five classrooms in a purpose built building, all equipped with Interactive Whiteboards, TV, video, DVD and audio resources as well as individual sets of dictionaries and thesauruses. Our departmental office is well stocked with classic and contemporary fiction as well as a range of non-fiction texts, a worksheet bank and a growing bank of Schemes of Work designed within the framework of the NLS. We have a video library of over 100 videos and audio tapes. The department office has a printer and photocopier for staff use, and members of the department are issued with laptops, enabling easy access to the internet, intranet and shared English resources. We also subscribe to various English journals and websites that offer an excellent reference medium. How We Work Key Stage 3 Classes are set from Year 7 onwards. We have smaller Literacy classes at Key Stage 3 which cater for the lower ability pupils. We work closely with the SEN Department to provide targeted support for pupils who need it. We are currently involved in the One to One Tuition funded by the Government, with a number of staff tutoring KS3 pupils who have not made progress in certain key areas. We are in the process of revising our Schemes of Work at Key Stage 3 and are still marking using the APP criteria. In Years 7 and 8, Sixth Form Community Service students also listen to pupils reading on a regular basis. All pupils are provided with a recommended reading list suitable for their age and ability range and we use the Accelerated Reader programme to help further imbed reading. Pupils writing skills are developed through numerous extended writing opportunities followed by prompt teacher feedback with learning targets. All pupils are provided with a Spelling List of words which they learn throughout the year. Pupils are provided with structured Speaking and Listening tasks throughout the year, again using the APP criteria as a point of reference when setting their targets for improvement. Homework is set twice a week at Key Stage 3, one of which is a reading homework the other a written piece.

7 Pupils work is regularly marked using the Department Marking policy. Targets are set for improvement so that pupils are aware with what they need to do in order to improve. National Curriculum assessments are done on a half termly basis and marks recorded on the Departmental database. All pupil data is kept on a Department computer database which teachers are regularly required to update. This allows us to monitor pupils progress and intervene where necessary. Key Stage 4 We have recently changed to the Cambridge IGCSE Language and AQA IGCSE Literature routes for Year 10 and have decided to follow the AQA Examining body for GCSE English and Literature starting September We consistently achieve above the national average in our A* to C results and are a very well regarded Department within school. We have a variety of resources at our disposal and are regularly renewing and updating Schemes of Work. Pupils are taught both Language and Literature courses simultaneously, often delivered by two different teachers per class, and terminate both at the end of Year 11. Key Stage 5 We offer English Literature, English Language and English Language and Literature at AS and A2 level. These are popular subject choices and a number of students have gone on to study English at University. All routes involve a mixture of written coursework and public exams. We are following the AQA specifications for each of the three A Levels that we offer and are going to move to Edexcel for our new intake of Year 12s in September We regularly organize theatre trips for Sixth Formers as well as subject related educational outings (for example a workshop at The Globe Theatre, a Literary walk, text related conferences, visit to The British Library).
